Yeah, hard-scifi definitely needs timescales, or, at least to some degree, a suitable technological MacGuffin - and there's always one to be found. I really liked the one in Project Hail Mary, still one of the books that impressed me the most in terms of "scientific worldbuilding," relativistic shenanigans can be fun in certain franchises, and often you get some sort of "subspace communication"-like proxy for instant light-speed transmissions of some sort, at least across a given distance. Otherwise there'd just be so very little to find, the premise of Santi, like so much space scifi, is already such a huge leap and not even vaguely possible unless our universe was positively teeming with life (whether you account for panspermia or not). And if it was teeming with life, we really should notice it, so... the conceit of the story is kind of (although inversely, not that the books necessarily adhere too much to their own ideas) self-evident, no matter what outcome we assume. But that's getting way ahead of the rest, no idea yet whether Jen has picked up the books already. Pretty decent audiobooks too, btw, even if you're a native Chinese speaker and have to "endure" non-native performances. They don't do away with the idiosyncrasies of Chinese translations, but that's just a common trade-off few literary translations can fully do away with, it seems.

The reality of physics is that it is very, very hard to travel between the stars. Things like "warp drive" and "hyperdrive" are basically fantasies, and while traveling through wormholes might (might) be theoretically possible, we have no idea how to do it. Also the fuel consumption necessary to reach even a small percentage of the speed of light is insane. So the idea that it will take the San-Ti 400 years to reach Earth from only 4 light years away is actually much more realistic than, say, Star Trek or Star Wars, and even doing it in 400 years bespeaks a level of technology far beyond our own. (By contrast, it would take the Voyager 1 probe about 72,000 years to cover the same distance, if it were heading in that direction.)

Finally blocked out a couple hours to pick this back up, man what a good show. Definitely plan on finishing it soon.

I hate it when songs get tarnished by murder.
