It got months and months of bad press during production (mostly from tabloids) calling it a failure, a huge gamble and pointing out every bit of drama, every production problem and delay, so most people had already decided it was hot garbage before it even hit theaters. People will still go on and on about how bad it was even though they've never actually seen it.

2024-03-29 05:02:42 +0000 UTCIt was a "flop" in terms of theatrical release but it did eventually turn a profit. One of the reasons was that it went severely over-budget, from a planned $100 million to eventually $175m (including $22m of Kevin Costner's own money). Turns out it's actually really hard to film an entire movie in the ocean and pretty sure Costner almost died at least once. It was the most expensive movie ever made until Titanic.
