War of the Worlds (2005) Full Length Reaction

Are we still alive?

A Spielberg sci-fi with John Williams scoring and Tom Cruise running from aliens, you know I'm gonna love it! So insane that this movie is based on a book from 1898?! What the frig!

I really really hate those kids...

Since you asked, you might want to check out The Cloverfield Paradox. It's a sci-fi horror/monster thing that I very much enjoyed.

Sample-Text

Some of the more "obscure" HG Wells stories I've read: "When the Sleeper Wakes" 1910 A guy with severe insomnia takes a bunch of drugs to make him sleep, but falls into a coma, only to awaken 200 years later to find out that he owns half the world. His uncle and another rich guy left their fortune to him and the trust that was set up to run it ended up secretly buying up half the world. They aren't too happy about him awakening and presumably taking over. It's a dystopian novel. "The World Set Free" 1913 Kind of predicts WWI, but sets it around the time of WWII and it's kind of a combination of both, with "atomic bombs" thrown in (It's actually the first use of the term "atomic bomb." ) They were so horrified by the results (In the novel, their effect was more like a regular nuclear reactor meltdown (a "China Syndrome" as it's sometimes called) that it results in world peace.

Everything about this film was amazing and I'm so happy you enjoyed it! Some trivia: Because the makers wanted this film to be a first-person account of an alien invasion (like H.G. Wells' original novel, where the reader learns nothing beyond the protagonist's experiences), there are very few panoramic images throughout the film. Almost all shots, especially during the tripod attacks, were filmed with the camera set at a person's eye level, imitating an individual's point of view in order to heighten the personal experience. The movie is also shot almost exclusively from the perspective of Ray and his family, and purposely eschews the tropes of most alien invasion scenarios, such as destruction of famous landmarks and areas, generals standing around a map planning their strategy, and reporters doing live coverage of events

These aliens no immune system at all 🫢 IDIOTS! 🙂 . Can't say this was a relaxing watch you were so tense and on edge throughout Jen especially the basement part 😬 but I enjoyed watching along with you as always 🙌 . Yes to the 1953 for the music especially 👍

Ian

Yes to the 1953 version!

Yeah, that is the dude from Shawshank. This is movie has a cool premise. Like you, makes me want to read the book. Robbie somewhat not all there, but did helped those people get on the ferry. Robbie making it back alive seemed like a reach. Six years after the movie, a British advertisement (in magazines, on billboards) depicting a 17-year old Dakota Fanning was banned by the UK as sexually provocative.

The aliens must've been Republicans; killing everyone different to them and failing to take precautions against airborne infections.

Who Are These People

I remember this film in the John Williams poll also Jen if you like to see more city destruction watch the Monster-verse starting with Godzilla (2014).

(I am telling you nothing of the story, so when you see it, it will be fresh. It is a much darker story than Spielberg typically tells.)

Delighted by your reaction to this, Jen 👏 (I may even watch it again this weekend ) As to another science fiction I’d LOVE for you to react to… At the insistence of Stanley himself (he even had a title card mocked up to show Steven: “A Stanley Kubrick Production of a Steven Spielberg film”. He always wanted Steven to direct it, but as long as Stanley was alive, Steven insisted Stanley direct it. After Stanley passed away in 1999, his widow Christiane Kubrick, and BIL Jan Harlan, approached Steven and asked if he would want to direct it. Spielberg’s answer: “I’d be honored.” Steven used Stanley’s extensive development notes and production art (Kubrick had been developing it since the early 70s). The movie stars Haley Joel Osment, Frances O’Connor, Sam Robards, Jude Law, William Hurt and the voice of Ben Kingsley (including as narrator). Written and Directed by Steven Spielberg Music by John Williams The movie is “A.I. : Artificial Intelligence” (2001)

Would love to see your reaction to the 1953 version. Fun fact, the two grandparents at the very end of this movie, actors Gene Barry and Ann Robinson, are the two stars of the 1953 movie.

There's an audio musical version of this which really slaps

That was an exciting reaction. 😀👍 And a loud movie! My fave Tom Cruise alien movie, hands down, is 'Oblivion' (2013) Please consider putting 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' (1978) on a poll sometime, it's a classic alien movie & has many fans. Has a good cast, it's a mild horror, pretty creepy! Another really good, more recent, alien horror is 'Color Out of Space' (2019). It's based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft and is somewhat The Thing-esque. Solid alien horror but it's disturbing. Yes please to the Sponge-dude's film. 🧽 Did you know that actor Clancy Brown voices Mr. Krabbs (Spongebob's boss)? You've seen him as the brutal, head prison guard in Shawshank and he was the training sergeant in Starship Troopers. He's also in a lead role in HBO's Carnivale. The greatest magic realism series that's ever been.

Jason Scade

The aliens are pretty accurate to the book. The heat rays, the tripods. Can't remember if they have shields or were just so armored that artillery didn't effect them. It's sort of the same plot but with no kids. Just trying to survive and you heard the final line of the novel there.

Reed James

If you've read some HG Wells before, then check out War of the Worlds. Invisible Man's a good read, too. You mentioned how that extermination line sounds like Independence Day but that movie is heavily influenced by War of the Worlds. I mean a "virus" destroys the aliens in it. It is the OG alien invasion story.

Reed James

Great reaction Jen to a great movie.Dakota was excellent in this and Tom got to do his running thing. The 1953 movie is good too with 50's technicolour flying-saucer aliens that somehow capture the book even better. Best of all is the 1978 Jeff Wayne music album.A true tour-de-force of story telling.Of course the original 1890's nivel is still wonderful.Recomend you watch, listen and read all.You wont be dissapointed.

Thanks! Someone here sent it to me ♡

Can't wait to watch it, you made my friday night 👍️👍️👍️👍️👍️

You should look up the story of the radio broadcast of War of the Worlds that Orsen Wells did in 1938. It was so realistic as a news broadcast that people thought it was actually happening and people freaked out to the point that when they came back on with the second half, they had to put a disclaimer at the beginning and add background music to let people know an alien invasion wasn't actually happening.

golfextreme

Looks like a double feature Saturday for me then 🍿🍺as I'm unable to watch rn should be a lot of fun 👍

Ian

Yessss, theres also an SNL skit with Tony Danza, where everybody has a Brooklyn accent, even Einstein 🤣🤣🤣
