Patreon Exclusive: 🖖Star Trek (2009) REWATCH Full Length Reaction

Rewatched this one to get back in the zone to finish the reboot trilogy!

I had a beer and rewatched this one before continuing the new trilogy. I'm glad I did because my mind was back with the old show and that timeline, so this was a great reminder of what's going on in the Kelvin timeline. I loved it this time too and even more so because I got a lot more references!!

there is a Radio comedy serial where they have the starship booby prize. so whenever star trek says, these are the journeys of the starship enterprise I hear the former

Now see how Star Trek "Should Have Ended..." https://youtu.be/WbJ-y6BWfUc?si=Xi5si22D1oDRz7-A

I love how unsurprised Scotty is to meet someone who traveled back in time from the future. He just wants a sandwich and doesn’t care who or when it comes from.

Thegonagle

I spoke too soon! Needless to say, my question has already been answered.

There are a lot of things to love and hate in this film. I'll only get into one. Why do both Pike and the captain of the Kelvin say, "you're the captain now" to Spock and Kirk when they leave their ships? A starfleet officer can take command of a ship without being the captain. It's the kind of dumb writing you get from Orci and Kurtzman, something that sounds cool but makes no sense.

Star Trek (2009) IMDb = 7.9. Metacritic = 82%. RT 94% (audience score 91%). "Star Trek (2009) reignites a classic franchise with action, humor, a strong story, and brilliant visuals, and will please traditional Trekkies and new fans alike." Leonard Nimoy on Star Trek (2009): "great heart with the characters. ... capture[s] the essence of the fun of the Star Trek characters, the chemistry between the people, the excitement of becoming part of that crew and going out on this adventure. ... I was pleased with how they treated the Spock character. I thought that they really got it. ... I was very happy to see Zachary Quinto take over the character. I think he’s an excellent, well-trained actor and excellent for the job."

Hey Jen, how would you feel about doing another run of, say, 8-12 more episodes from the original TV series sometime soon? Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the crew, a Red Shirt or two, and more of that fantastic, dramatic musical scoring that’s among the best in television history? Sounds like a good time, eh? Think about it. ;-) BTW, while I have your attention, I just wanted to let you know I joined you almost 100% because you comment on film and TV music with the zeal of a music lover and (if I may assume) the knowledge of a musician, whereas most other reactors I’ve seen don’t acknowledge the soundtracks unless they’re playing pop songs. Keep doing what you’re doing and I’ll keep watching TV and movies with you, some I’ve seen and a bunch I haven’t, when I get home from work in the middle of the night and nobody else is up to join me. I’m having a great time, and I hope you’re having a great time too.

Why do you feel compelled to bring politics into it?

Chuck Drennen

I love how you're steadfast in your opinion about the new movies. These are great! The conservatives who quibble (or, 'tribble') about the differences and departures make me sad. Not because their views affect mine at all, it's just that people like that are robbed of possible enjoyment because their brains can't expand to appreciate anything new. So sad.

Well Jen this was Vulcan awesome , I can't recall your original watch but this was supreme I loved it 🖖 . I don't generally say much but have to say I for one love these movies I've seen some TOS but not a lot but that's ok but personally I treat them all separately anyway 👍 . Seeing you enjoying a beer makes you even more wonderful I myself didn't have Heineken but had instead a bottle of kingfisher premium beer 🍺 , what kind of captain would you be well the best obviously but I believe as you have such a tender caring beautiful heart you would have done exactly the same as Kirk's father did 🖖 . Pikes fantastic I agree really really like him a lot and yes the casting was top notch Karl urban is perfect as bones 👌. Wisdom nugget Weed = memory loss Jen can confirm 😄 . You're from the future do they still have sandwiches lol Scotty asking the important questions #priorities and yes Jen you and I wavelengths are click click Scotty always the MVP 🥂 as always it's a yes Jen to whatever you ask you know I will watch 🍿 this was fantastic you're the best FACTS !

First off, let me float this fizzy concept past you: champagne pilsner. I don't know if Chris was a fan of Trek growing, but he does have some Trek DNA in his system - his dad Robert Pine, a veteran TV actor, appeared in episodes of both Voyager and Enterprise. (Most well-known for playing Sgt Getraer in 70s cop show CHiPs - to my generation at least). Simon Pegg was definitely a Trek fan as was Australian actor Eric Bana (Nero). Like Pegg, Bana started doing comedy, and was on 90s Aussie sketch show Full Frontal (no, really!) for several years before a career in movies took off. Trek alumnus alert: The snooty head of the Vulcan Science Academy was W. Morgan Sheppard, who also played the cranky old cyberneticist who took Data's body for a joyride in TNG, and Kirk's Klingon gaoler in ST-VI: Undiscovered Country .

DS9 is my favorite Trek. By setting the show on a station instead of a ship, so that the crew couldn't just fly away from the consequences of their actions, the show was able to create a much richer world and much deeper storytelling. The only tricky part about reacting to a show like DS9 is that the episodes are more interconnected making it harder to pick and choose specific ones to watch/react to.

Patrick Egan

While Deep Space Nine will always be my favorite Star Trek show, Strange New Worlds is indeed excellent.

Patrick Egan

Jen I really think you would like STAR TREK DEEP SPACE 9. It has a different look and feel compared to the 2 ST series you have watched so far.

Michael Aalgaard

Out of curiosity, if u dont mind mine me asking Jen, what is the current number of all your starfleet attire?

Lean

Seeing Jen catch many of the references this time around was a delight.

Thomas Yanez

That was a lot of fun, thanks for doing the rewatch. I do hope that you go back and finish watching TOS after TNG, and even better if you then went straight to "Strange New Worlds", the recent series about Pike.

Thomas Yanez

I’m a straight guy, but this movie gave me such a man crush on Zachary Quinto’s portrayal of Spock.

S C G

Everybody has a terrible memory. Besides, it wouldn't have been nearly as fun to watch it again if you remembered everything.

Sample-Text

OMG! Yes! There is a Star Trek show about Pike, and it's called "Strange New Worlds". So. Frickin. Good. And although there is one plot point that is explored in Star Trek Discovery, I don't feel that series is a necessary prerecriset to enjoy the series. Please watch it! Also, if you think this Pike is hot, wait till you see SNW's Pike. Whoa! hahaha

Eric S

While 'hate' is a strong word, I don't particularly care for them either. They always rank at the bottom of the list for me. Even below The Final Frontier, Insurrection, and Nemesis.

Michael Goggin

I must be the only one who hates these films

Benjamin Gerrald

What a blast watching you rewatch and getting how well they paid homage to TOS (they really knocked it out of the park) Yes to more classic episodes please 🙏

Jeff Preiss

I agree that [1] casting is impeccable (I was struck by that years ago when I first watched the movie); and [2] the chemistry between Uhura and Spock is stellar and makes sense. From IMDb: "This film finally establishes Uhura's first name in Star Trek canon as Nyota. Gene Roddenberry never came up with a first name for her while Star Trek (1966) was in production." "When Chris Pine was cast as Captain James T. Kirk, he sent William Shatner a letter and received a reply containing Shatner's approval." "The Korean-American actor John Cho was initially uncertain about being cast as the Japanese-American officer Hikaru Sulu, but George Takei, who played Sulu on Star Trek (1966), encouraged him to take the role, as Sulu is a character who represents all of Asia."

Clay F

so excited about this!

MattN

I'm patiently waiting for this series reaction. 😁

Prof. Writhms

I haven’t watched it but the Star Trek Strange New Worlds show on Paramount + is about Pike (different actor though)

Ian Forbes

Jenception? 😂

Jen M

...and yes, would love you see you react to all of the original series....p.s. when is the Star Trek Sing-a-Long CD coming out Jen?

Randy Aiken

It would be interesting to watch Jen react to the original Jen reaction to the movie! Jen Squared.

Randy Aiken

If that was a Heineken, I think I love you even more, lol! Great Rewatch!!!

Joel

Awesome been waiting on this, watching now!!!

Lee R.

I had an ice cold Heineken 🍻

Jen M

Definitely be watching this tomorrow Jen got plenty of beer to have while watching but might just watch with a cider 👍

Ian

I have to ask, what kind of beer? I just enjoyed a Cisco Gripah 🍺

Don Kelley

A Borg movie in the Kelvin timeline would/could be mind-blowing. Resistance is futile.
