1917 (2019) Full Length Reaction

"Hope is a dangerous thing."

We're watching this in honor of all those who served.
Wow, this being made to look like all one shot really blew me away. It had a completely different feel than anything I've watched before. I am glad I saw this one just for that experience, but I also liked the story, the lighting, the music and the actors a lot.

1917 (2019) Full Length Reaction

If I remember any war film that has this same formula I’ll comment on it Jen. Another Sam Mendes movies that comes to mind are Jarhead (2005) & Road to Perdition (2002). And to all veterans that fought any war I salute you 🫡.

That was incredibly well made on every level and tense, moving. Great reaction. 💜 You'd have a similar experience with Platoon (1986) and We Were Soldiers (2002), both set in Vietnam. in 1917, the song in the forest scene at 1:30:00 is a traditional American folk and gospel song from 1800s, it's called "The Wayfaring Stranger". It's also in the epic Civil War love story film 'Cold Mountain' (2003), you would absolutely love this movie. It's on the request site.

Be sure to check out the work of WW1 British artist Paul Nash, who was in the trenches in 1917 & 18. You can really see the influence of his work here, particularly during Schofield's midnight run the town. My suggestions for war movies (and loosely based on real events) would be The Great Escape (1963) and Breaker Morant (1980), the latter set in the 2nd Boer War (1899-1902).

The song that is sung near the end of the movie is I am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger and here is the guy who sang it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp7mdSMNQB0

I think it's interesting that we're getting some of the better movies about WW1 and WW2 as we stray away from living memory of them and straying away from true stories about specific actions and more into fiction and sentiment about those wars. This and Jojo Rabbit are IMO some of the better movies about those wars even though they are both entirely fictional - I think it is overrated but Saving Private Ryan is considered to be one of the better movies about WW2 and is also entirely fictional and relatively modern also. You mentioned Being John Malkovich the other day - it isn't a war movie or a one shot but it is filmed in a very unusual way, might be worth a look if you're looking for something different.

Great reaction as always, hope you have a good week

A couple of my favorite war films I'd highly recommend are Terrence Malick's films "Thin Red Line" 1998 and " A Hidden Life" 2019
