S01E07 Lonely Among Us, S01E08 Justice, S01E09 The Battle, S01E10 Hide and Q

Alright we have another quadruple episode drop! Only Hide and Q was voted in Patron's Top 10 for season 1 but I still had fun with all of them. There were some moments that made me truly LOL. Let me know if you're getting sick of hearing me say "Captain's Log" every single time lol 🖖

I love Jonathan Frakes choice in Hide and Q. His hand movements at the aquisition of his Q powers emmulate Gary Mitchell in Where No Man Has Gone Before, a welcome omage to The Original Series. It was also the same choice Mitchell was given. Riker chose differently and th end result was not his destruction. Its little easter eggs like this that really appealed to me when I watched TNG. In many ways, a lot of the old school fans had some issues in that Roddenberry was and his writing staff was trying to fulfill a vision of solving problems without resorting to violence. Action vs contemplation and negotiation. Picard turns into a skilled diplomat as he progresses and that is the appeal of his character vs Kirk. As far as Q being a villain, he represents more that spiritual dilemma and/or dynamic without being too preachy. You literally have a god giving you godlike gifts and Riker was able to figure out that ethical dilemma to his benefit and character development. This was the episode where Q really came into his own as an antoganist. The writers made his appearances spare, but always in a way which satisified moral dilemmas. After this, I began to enjoy his appearances.

I don't know that I agree with folks saying that Q isn't a villain. Personally I would indeed call him that, specifically a villain in the vein of Mister Mxyzptlk from the old Superman comic books. An impish pain in the butt type villain who delights in just showing up and effing with everything.

A lot of the episodes of the first season were written in the 70's, when they were trying to reboot the series. 'Star Trek The Motion Picture' script was also written around this time, it was expanded upon for the movie.

About 20 years ago, I gave an academic paper at a conference of the Working Group on Law, Culture, and the Humanities, which centered on the episode "Justice."

You mentioned that someone said that the music in the later seasons sucked. I'd say it's not that the music sucks, but that the music is definitely different. The music in season 1 and most of season 2 is much like the music in The Original Series: it's large, loud, and grand. The music for the later seasons leans more heavily on being a subdued undercurrent with occasional punches rather than being larger than life or like one of the characters. It's great that you're liking the show, even the ones us long-time Trekkies consider stinkers. You should absolutely go into each episode with an open mind and form your own opinions.
