One of the big trivia items about this episode is that during the filming of the episode, William Shatner's father passed away. He was notified late in the day on Friday but insisted on finishing filming for the day. He drew comfort from Nimoy and Cinematographer Jerry Finnerman whose father had died on set some years before. He left, flew to Montreal for the funeral and returned to film the remainder of the episode the following Monday. Nimoy was especially touched and drew on the emotion of the incident for the mind meld sequence with the Horta late in the episode.
