πŸ––Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan (1982) Full Length Reaction

* This is the Theatrical Edition with runtime 1:53:01 *

I have always been, and shall always be, your friend.

UMMM I had no idea it would end like that! πŸ˜₯ This one was so great! It was so cool to see Khan back and I'm so happy I saw Space Seed first. Great music, way cooler costumes, some great literary references all throughout and a more mature, introspective Kirk. I'm really looking forward to seeing where we go next with our crew.

πŸ––Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan (1982) Full Length Reaction

Comments

Really we only have Khan’s word for anything he claims, he could have killed friends who rebelled and his wife himself then when the disaster occured he could take advantage, including his calling the only woman to go there his wife and not his slave was clearly a lie, Khan was a megalomaniac and psychopath

Captain S. H. Beagle

Jen - I wasn't following you when you did these films, so I decided to go back while waiting for the next DS9! One thing really cool about this film from an artistic/directorial choice: Ultimate Rivaly - hero vs villain, Kirk vs Khan. Epic. Legend. Super Intense. They are never both in the same place, never meet face-to-face and, in fact, never even appear on screen together in the same shot. Crazy.

John DiGiantomasso

Peter Preston was Scotty's nephew. When Kahn attacks and you see the trainees scrambling, Peter Preston can be seen climbing a ladder. From the novelization, he was the one who got Auxiliary Power restored and that's how he got his burns and radiation exposure.

John

Tyrrell, when the walls fell.

John

Kirstie Alley (of Cheers fame) who played the female Vulcan Saavik died of cancer a year ago at the age of 71. R.I.P. I suggest watching the remaing two movies of the latest Star Trek trilogy (w/Chris Pine).

Clay F

SOF was soo underrated.

J M

I get a warm fuzzy seeing you appreciate this soundtrack so much, this is one of the best. Also, thanks for watching this one, been awhile, forgot how great this flick is.

J M

U r getting into some of the greatest 80s movies and I love it Miss Money Jenny. Please watch Streets of Fire.

Dennis Renn

Could it be a PAL DVD? What country are you in?

Bryan Tuck

Can't understand why my DVD runs so much quicker than this :(

Shaun Stonard

KHAAAAAAN!

Greg S.

Another great soundtrack is Peter Pan 2003 very little seen but excellent version of the story.

Alberto Blanco

The only way they could get Leonard Nimoy to come back for this one was if they agreed to kill off his character so he wouldn't have to be tied down to what he, at the time, thought was destined to be a dying franchise. As it turns out this was a huge hit, and also the most fun Nimoy had doing Star Trek in a long time. Rumor has it, is he was supposed to be the character who died instead of Scotty's nephew but when rumor got out that he was going to die they changed it so he died once in the Kobiashi Maru test to get the rumors out of the way, then way at the end when even the skeptical might no longer be expecting it. If it's true, I think the change made for a much better ending.

Kevin Bartelen

I'm also glad they released a remastered version that got rid of the god awful dynamic noise removal they originally did on it for the blu-ray release. :D

Chrissonator

I used to watch all these movies on vhs when i was home sick from school. also you should start tng around the 4th star trek movie. that way you can just continue on into the tng movies directly after undiscovered country. you shouldnt have to know everything about tng before those movies they can exist on their own as long as you are familiar with the characters. generations is a mix of tos and tng so it should be a perfect transition. also also how much more impactful was that than the remake? crazy.

Saw this in the theater when I was a kid. It's always in the running for my favorite movie of all time. And as many times as I've seen it, over all of these years, I still cry at the end!

Stephen W. Evans

Jen's like the third reactor I've seen who thought that was what Carol was implying, and I'd never seen anyone jump to that besides reactors. It's a much more common thought than I'd expected :)

Justin Miyashiro

This movie single handedly saved the franchise

Lonnie Vannatter

"She just gonna get naked?" Gotta keep that for the YouTube edit πŸ˜‚ I saw this in the theater when I was 6 years old, then again a few years ago for a Fathom event. My personal favorite Star Trek and the next one is right behind it even though it's really underrated. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Awesome watch! 🀘

Great reaction Jen. I thought Ricardo Montalban was amazing as Khan. "To the last, I will grapple with thee... from Hell's heart, I stab at thee! For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee!" Too good! Seeing this movie on the big screen when it came out was awesome. James Horner was incredible as usual. The music at full volume in the theater was breathtaking!! I hope we don't have to wait so long for the next Star Trek movie reaction. The wait for this one killed me.

John Courtright

Oh, I agree!

Sean Novack

Anyone who says Shatner can't act has never seen Kirk's eulogy for Spock at the end of "Wrath Of Khan".

Sean Novack

Kirk will be born in Riverside, Iowa. There's already a "historical" marker commemorating his birth. https://iowastartingline.com/2022/06/22/iowa-weird-how-riverside-became-the-home-of-captain-kirk/

John

Peter Preston. You can also see him climbing a ladder in Engineering as everyone else is running away.

John

And so your journey begins! Excited for the other 4 movies!

RJ MacReady

I am currently listening to two audio books: Star Trek the first 25 years and Star Trek the next 25 years which are told 95% thru direct quotes of the people involved. Here are some tidbits: After being unhappy with Star Trek 1 Nimoy was not inclined to return but when told that he would be killed he returned. He had such a great time with this movie that he ended up regretting his "death." The ambiguous ending showing Spock's torpedo / coffin was not part of the original ending but test audiences felt the ending was to much of a downer and so it was added. The director did not want this new ending but had no choice but to include it. Gene Roddenberry did not want Spock to die so he leaked his copy of the script to the fans to attempt to foil it. Because all the scripts were coded by person the studio knew it was Gene's script that was leaked. This forced the writers to create that training mission at the start where all the crew "died" to fool the audience into thinking that was the intended death. Actually Spock's death came much earlier in the original draft and Gene's leak resulted in a far better death for Spock at the end saving the ship. Finally the director could be considered a savior of Star Trek not just because he directed the best TOS movie but because the script was a complete mess. He rewrote it into the movie we have today without taking a writing credit for it. A second mediocre Trek movie might have ended the franchise.

Andrew Roach

In a way, recast twice. No spoilers. I thought Robin Curtis was fine as Saavik.

Matt O'Keefe

Kirk is from Iowa, Shatner is of your species, Canadian. :)

Matt O'Keefe

Hard to watch, I always cry when Spock diesπŸ₯²πŸ₯²πŸ₯²πŸ₯²πŸ₯²πŸ₯²πŸ₯²πŸ₯²

Perry Campbell

The character was Sikh, and the actor was Mexican. How do you get Canadian?

David Olden

The new costumes were made of wool. Now imagine wearing wool under hot studio lighting all day. β€˜Monster’ to the actors as well!

David Olden

I'm pretty sure that Jen is going to watch the next movie as soon as she sees the title, so hopefully the wait won't be too long for us, either.

Thomas Yanez

First Bond and then Spock - How much can you take? At this rate, you're going to have to buy a black dress and veil.

Clifton Owens

Ah Khan Noonien Singh. The worlds most deadly Canadian.

Enterprize

Just finished this and I love your reaction! The uniform was nicknamed "The Monster Maroon" because of the difficulty fans often encountered duplicating it originally. It truly is one of the best Uniform designs and I even got a version of it to wear for Halloween one year lol. The Reliant is another brilliant Starship design!

Wade Wallenstein

It is great when the films you want come week after week. But I enjoy the waits when they happen too, the anticipation enhances the viewing.

Jason Scade

He found it difficult to get back into the character of Khan after playing Mr. Roarke for so long. He had to have Harve Bennett send him a copy of "Space Seed" so he could watch himself play the part in order to get back into character properly.

Bammer

Kirk quotes from 'A Tale of Two Cities' Khan quotes Ahab from 'Moby Dick' meaning revenge has a price,so does redemption..

Celeste McAllister

There is a deleted scene with dialogue between Spock and Kirk that explains Saavik's emotions, her "damn" during the Kobayashi Maru test and her crying at Spock's funeral. She is half Romulan. The scene is, unfortunately, not even included in the director's cut of the film. Another deleted scene, which is included in the director's cut, explains why Scotty is devastated when Midshipman First Class Peter Preston dies. Peter Preston is Scotty's sister's youngest son. I was six months old when this movie came out so obviously I couldn't see it in theaters when it was new, but mom and dad went to see it and they said when Spock died there wasn't a dry eye in the theater. I did get to go see it in theaters for it's 35th Anniversary at Century 16 Theater's hosted by Fathom Events.

Bammer

In regards to the 6 bonus episodes my vote is to put them up on YouTube.

This is yet another sequel that improves on the original. Terminator, Alien, Star Wars, and Star Trek all bred fantastic sequels. Unfortunately only Star Trek continued to make more movies in series that were really good. Star Wars did have Return of the Jedi, but Star Trek really kept making good ones, at least several more good ones.

PapaXan

This was the reaction that made me join Patreon (and rent the movie) just to see your full reaction. I'm glad that you didn't immediately recognize the Kobayashi Maru from the reboot. One of the things I hated about the reboot was how they took a major sub-plot from this movie and turned it into a joke.

John Bresnahan

Jen. I just wanted to make a few comments after seeing your reaction this morning. First. Now, after watching Wrath of Kahn, you know why you should watch all the movies in order and not only the even number movies as some have suggested. Second. To answer all your questions I suggest you watch all the bonus features on the Directors Cut editions. Third You will find out where Kirk is from when you watch ST4 The Voyage Home and lastly please don't make us wait so for your next Star Trek video. The wait between movies reminds me of the long wait when they originally premiered.

Joseph H Searles

Chekov was a crew member in the first season. He was not promoted to a member of the bridge crew until the second season. Kahn memorized all the crew members information when he was in sick bay. Remember the Enterprise has 430 crew members.

Joseph H Searles

Wilson. Bond. Spock. It's been a very emotional week. Got my hankies, press play. That was very exciting! The final talk between Kirk and Spock, the eulogy are very moving and the music is beautiful. Looking forward lots to Trek 3 and 4 (it's a three movie story arc). Some of Khan's quotes are from Moby Dick, either paraphrased; "I'll chase him round the Moons of Nibia and round the Antares maelstrom.." or direct "from hell's heart, I stab at thee..". Did Khan pursuing Kirk at the end remind you any of Quint stubbornly continuing to chase after the shark to the point where The Orca is bursting into flames and breaking down? Btw, the top you wore matched the gorgeous purple hues in the nebula at the finale. πŸ’œ "Scotty, you old space dog." πŸ˜‚ Scotty played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes at the funeral. πŸ’™ It's a good job you weren't watching 'The Fly' (1986) if there was a fly pestering you.

Jason Scade

To this day my Mum is convinced that Ricardo Montleban had a prosthetic chest despite me constantly reassuring her that he's 100% legit.

Patrick

Star Trek The Wrath of Khan came out in 1982 Aliens came out in 1986. So … Horner could not have β€˜reused’ his Aliens music in Khan. You can’t reuse music you won’t write for four years!

David Olden

FYI... the things you missed in the director cuts were minimal. The biggest thing is that the kid who died, that Scotty was so upset about, was a relative of Scotty's.

Vwlss Nvwls

Todd Preble

Ricardo Montleban, who played Khan, is more famous for playing Mr. Roarke in the 70's tv series 'Fantasy Island'

JPDotCom23

This is such a great movie. Calling back one of the best villains of the series, and keeping the movie/story simple, but complex enough to be exciting and entertaining. And I love that it takes place in just a couple days. Surely the best of all the Star Trek movies.

Vwlss Nvwls

Saavik's fate is worse than death, she is recast.

Andrew Skow

But we all know you would be a hero and not a villain, so your movie would be called "Jen's Justice"

Vwlss Nvwls

That was the basis for Alan Rickman's character on Galaxy Quest, who was sick of his own character on that show.

Chris Biebel

Just so you know, Leonard Nimoy (who plays Spock) was the director for the 3rd movie.

Chris Biebel

that was absolute joy to watch this movie with you.

zynjams

After I & II, the only other TREK movie with multiple versions out there is VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY. Some may disagree, but I highly recommend the theatrical cut for that, too. The director's cut adds what feels like half of a subplot that's not fully fleshed out, and I think the movie plays much better without it. But that's just me. :)

Bryan Tuck

Interesting tidbit, Walter Koenig's Pavel Chekov and Captain Terrell were the first to discover that it was Khan, when in fact, Koenig's Chekov didn't even join 'Star Trek' until the second season, so he wasn't even part of the Space Seed episode.

JPDotCom23

Leonard Nimoy was not really on board for these Start Trek films at the beginning because he was frustrated by the fact that he couldn't get any good TV or film roles at the time because he was Mr. Spock to so many people. So in order for him to come back for this film, he demanded that they kill Spock off. It was a huge secret at the time - the only people who knew what happened were the actors and crew on set for that scene - none of the other actors in the Enterprise crew knew about it until they saw the film opening night.

Tim Arnold

The cadet who dies, who Scotty seems so emotionally invested in, is his nephew. The Director's Cut makes that more clear.

David Brown

I'm so glad I'm on vacation til the 18th, I get to stay up late and watch this tonight!

David Crabtree

Jen M

Where does someone even find the theatrical version these days?

Patrick Egan

Yes!!
