WarGames (1983) Full Length Reaction

Shall we play a game?

Oh man this one was high stakes! Wasn't expecting it to get as dire as it did! Really enjoyed it, especially the super charming Matthew Broderick as the hackin genius who sneaks out of NORAD!

WarGames (1983) Full Length Reaction

Comments

I just saw your comment after writing mine. I suggested the same movie, because I too always think of the two together.

I suggest a similar movie called "The Manhattan Project" (1986), and a great but often overlooked Mathew Broderick film called "Project X" (1987). There are others from the 80s like these, but I think the above two are must see movies if you like this style of movie.

According to Air & Space/Smithsonian, as of 2022, the U.S. DEFCON level has never been more severe than DEFCON 3. The DEFCON 2 levels in the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis and 1991 Gulf War applied only to the U.S. Strategic Air Command (SAC). This was a huge hit when it came out and pretty much launched Broderick's career. If you enjoyed this, you can see Broderick and Wood (Professor Falkin) in the film "LadyHawke". Also starring Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeifer. I was born in 1971 so I was 12 when this came out. Yeah, I did the phone trick to make calls on phone booths, he was grounding out the microphone in the mouthpiece and my older brother taught me how to do it. Coming home to no parents was completely normal. I started doing that when I was 10 and my Mom didn't get home for a couple of hours. My Dad was a cop and always worked weird shifts. I didn't see him much around the house until the weekends. We were ALL terrified of nuclear war back in the 70's and 80's. I still remember the "duck & cover drills" that would have made no difference whatsoever. I learned when I was 31 that I grew up less than 3 miles away from a primary target in the case of Nuclear Attack (The Federal Ammunition plant in Anoka, Minnesota that manufactures 70% of the ammunition for the US military every year). The other Big Broderick Movie is "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". That one is a must-see that features Broderick as lead. The film "Glory" (1989) is amazing. Life-changing actually. It is extremely accurate contextually and only takes a few liberties with the characters. It's based on a true story, came out the year I graduated from high school, and my son watched it in class when he was in middle school. Denzel Washington earned an Academy Award for his performance, and Morgan Freeman was amazing as well.

The Manhattan project 1986 is a good movie, I always watched wargames and the Manhatten project together.

A good one for you you might like is Time After Time from 1979..It's HG Wells & his time machine chasing Jack the Ripper. Also Wargames same director as Saturday Night Fever a very dark & not appropriate for this time musical drama,

Alberto Blanco

During the Cuban Missle Crisis and the Persian Gulf War (1991) Strategic Air Command went to DEFCON 2. However the entire armed services have never gone past DEFCON 3.

I've loved this movie since I was a kid. "A strange game. The only winning move is not to play." is such a simple statement, yet so profound. Someone else mentioned Thirteen Days, a movie about the Cuban Missile Crisis starring Kevin Costner. I definitely recommend that one, it's a really well done movie. There's also a direct-to-video sequel to WarGames called "WarGames: The Dead Code". Don't bother with it, it's terrible. The "Godzila with the Puff Daddy song" is the one from '98 starring Matthew Broderick, and while I like it more than many people do, it's still not great. The 2014 Godzilla movie and its sequels are MUCH better, imho.

Funny enough Jen, you mentioned wanting to watch the Godzilla movie with a puff daddy song, and I believe you’re referencing the 1998 Godzilla … starring Matthew Broderick! It’s pretty terrible but the right mood and/or adult beverage can make it fun.

Mathew Broderick was huge in the 80s, but I think what happened was once he got old enough to not really look like a kid anymore, his career slowed down, he married Sarah Jessica Parker, they started a family, then she was on the rise, and he was doing more theater. He kind of vanished, but still periodically popped up out of nowhere here and there. I think between the two of them, they had enough money and he was just over caring about being famous, and prefered just doing what ever he was into. There are some classic flicks of his that you should definitely see. "Election" wouldn't be my first choice, but I remember when it came out, it was the first thing we'd seen him in in a while, and it was hilarious. If you want to see it, just see it! There's also "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Biloxi Blues", "Glory", "Project X", "Ladyhawke", "The Cable Guy", and probably a couple I'm forgetting.

Happy you enjoyed this, that was lots of nostalgic fun and the ending is still very tense! High five for DEFCON 5. 🥰 💜 WarGames was a huge hit upon release, a $12 million budget and took $124 million at the box office. I hadn't seen this film in decades, wasn't previously aware that Michael Madsen was in the opening scene. This film is 10 years before Reservoir Dogs, but I see he's still quick to go all 'Mr.Blonde' in a tense situation. :/ The director of Wargames, John Badham, directed a great cop/buddy/comedy/action film called 'Stakeout' (1987). I think you would enjoy it a lot. Two great male leads as the cops, a very charming and charismatic leading lady who you have seen very recently and a great actor playing the villain. 1:20:15 The film '13 Days' (2000) is the story of the Cuban Missile Crisis, when the USA and USSR came to the brink of nuclear war. For realsies. :/ An unmissable Matthew Broderick film is 'The Freshman' (1990) - a crime comedy. The plot revolves around a young, somewhat naive, New York film student's entanglement with organized crime in an illicit business of offering exotic and endangered animals as speciality food items, including his being tasked with delivering a Komodo dragon for this purpose. You'll love the casting, they'll give you a performance you can't refuse. Other top Broderick picks are; Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) Comedy Biloxi Blues (1988) Military dramady Glory (1989) US Civil War drama The Cable Guy (1996) Psychological thriller comedy. Dir by Ben Stiller

Jason Scade

Matthew Broderick best films besides this: Ferris Bueler's Day Off, Project X, Ladyhawke. Glory was also good, but it's not of this Wargames era.

I was a teenager in 1983 when this came out and owned a computer and a modem. I knew some people who were into "Computer Security Testing" back then. The techniques they show in the movie were very accurate for the time. And I think it might be the first time "Firewall" was used in a movie. and "back door." EDIT:Oh, the arcade at the beginning, "20 Grand Palace" was located 2 blocks from my high school. I used to go there every day to play pac-man and I remember when they filmed this movie!
