Red Dawn (1984) Full Length Reaction

✨ Top Tier Request from Todd - thank you Todd! ✨

It's kinda strange, isn't it? How the mountains pay us no attention at all. You laugh or you cry, the wind just keeps on blowing.

I had no idea what this movie was about so I was very surprised! Very different than anything I've seen before + it was cool to see all the 80's stars so young in this movie together (didn't realize Patrick Swayze + Jennifer Gray did this movie before Dirty Dancing!) Go Wolverines!

⭐ Special thanks to Producers: MattN, Todd Preble, Incognito, John Walters, JT, Noby, SwimintheRain, John Gray, Randy Aiken, Barry Hammock, Celeste McAllister, Nick Corning, OrangeLion, Sonny Smith + those who wish to remain uncredited :)

Red Dawn (1984) Full Length Reaction

Comments

Horrible movie. A complete joke. Could never happen. I was age 21 and in college when the movie was released. As a young adult, I wanted to like the movie but found the movie absolutely ridiculous in so many ways. Not only the idiotic premise, but stuff like the fake hugs and fake cries. “Don’t you ever cry again, as long as you live.” – what a line. You may ask "couldn’t the army do something?” Answer = Yes. While the depiction of the untrained teen wolverines was ludicrous, the US military (unlike in the movie) would have taken care of business in short order. Yet, again, even with the facts presented at the beginning of the movie, the situation is nonsensical. When Jed and Matt were at the fence crying and talking to their dad in such a preposterous scenario, and Jed says “I love you” – then as Jed and Matt were walking away, the dad screams “Avenge me!” – it was like an SNL skit. The movie was a like a series of SNL skits. With all this said – just my opinion and I am happy for patrons who love this movie got to see Jen react to it.

Another new one for me. I think the nostalgia of seeing in the 80's might have enhanced it as a rewatch now, like quite a few titles from that decade. Interesting concept that could be fleshed out into a gripping drama series.

Yeah, I was 9 in '84, and it definitely scared the crap out me, at the time. Luckily, my dad was in the military and he told me that it would be next to impossible for the Russians to invade the US mainland. And, even if they somehow managed to get troops on our shores, they'd never be able to keep a foothold. Because they'd be so outnumbered and they wouldn't be able to resupply them anyway. Still, I thought it was a good film and an interesting concept. The remake was total trash, though.

I'd never seen this. I was expecting Canadian Bacon (1995)

This was the first film with a "PG-13" rating to be released in theaters. I saw it in theaters when I was 13 in 1984 up here in Minnesota with all of my friends. We immediately went home and starting putting "go bags" together with things like knives, matches, walkie-talkies, first-aid kits, and wrist rocket slingshots. The threat of the Soviet Union was a VERY big thing back in the early to mid 80's. People today don't understand exactly how evil they were and how many millions of people that government killed. Over the years they made Adolf Hitler look like the JV Squad when it came to civilian deaths. Anyone who craves socialism needs only to look at history and see why it never has worked and never will.

This is random, but when you mentioned movies with kids fighting in it, you made me think of "The Rescue" from 1988 with a young Kevin Dillon in it, about the children of Navy Seals that go into North Korea to rescue their fathers after they become POWs, and the government scraps the plan to do it themselves. It's not as serious as a movie. Much more light-hearted, in fact, I think it might have been made by Disney, if that gives you an idea. It's probably not on anyone's must-see list. I haven't seen it in so long that I'm not sure how well it's held up, but I thought it was a really fun flick when I was a kid, and there's probably a few others out there that might remember it. Actually, now that I think about it, it's kind of a similar idea to the first "Iron Eagle" movie with the great Louis Gosset Jr. They were popular in the late 80s/early 90s, and I think they made four of those. Again, maybe not a must-see, but there'll probably be more Iron Eagle fans out there.

Great film. I remember watching it back in the '80's. I was in High School then, so this film was pretty much aimed at me. It sure does hit differently watching a film about a Russian invasion now.

John

Yes, that was Lea Thompson, the mom from Back to the Future. This was one of her earliest movies. She actually starred in a successful sitcom in the late 90s called "Caroline in the City", and it was really good.

I love meat, but I could never hunt. I would feel so bad killing an animal. My soul is always torn between these two realities. :D

I was in high school when this hit video, and my friends and I rented it solely based on the cast. This was such an insane concept, but it worked so well.

After watching this, I hope you react to "The Outsiders" 1983

Joe Lazarus

Enjoyed this one! I was one of those teens like you mentioned in your outro who saw this is theaters when it came out in the 80s, and it's been a really long time since I've watched it. Great cast, and it's fun to look back and see most of them near the start of their careers. You asked about Lawrence of Arabia... It's an epic movie and one that you should watch, but it's very long (like there's an intermission in the middle of the movie long), slow paced, and may not make for a great reaction video. Opinions will vary of course.

Eric Denney

Three of the actors in this movie were in The Outsiders (1983), Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell and Darren Dalton, the actor who plays Darryl in Red Dawn. If you watch The Outsiders, I recommend the original theatrical version not the complete novel.

Ian Cano

Ya, this is a watch along with you one.

Barry Hammock

Thanks again for a great pick Todd, really glad I saw this one :)

a great Charlie Sheen movie is Platoon

Just watched this with you you and am glad you enjoyed it! This movie is also one of my favorites and remember watching it in the theater. As another comment mentioned, there is a more recent remake of this film, but I don't think it measured up to the original. Yes! You you were unsure, but you were right that it was Lea Thompson from Back to the Future. As far as your question abought watching Lawrence of Arabia, yes you should watch that sometime. It's a classic!

Todd Preble

So glad you reacted to this! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Now watch others follow ;)

RJ MacReady

This a real throwback. I last saw it in the early 90´s. Really liked the movie back then and its still very unique, the 2012 version isnt as good imho. Thanks Jen for this old Memory.
