Thunderball (1965) Full Length Reaction

Comments

Only just managed to watch this next Bondy with you Jen. Glad you enjoyed but I've never considered it one of my favs...although was more fun in your company!! Weirdly though, if I was to ever be 007 in a movie it would be this one. Don't know why, but maybe something to do with being in the Bahamas & interacting with really beautiful women 😉 lol. Jen, as you love this music so much, I urge you to check out a band called "Q The Music" on their Youtube page. They are the premier tribute act and played at a number of Bond events around the World. And are awesome 😃

The dictionary definition of the word "thunderball" is a military term used by U.S. soldiers to describe the mushroom cloud seen during the testing of atomic bombs. Hence its use as a title, because this would be the result of S.P.E.C.T.R.E. detonating the stolen atomic bombs.

The boat was an early version of a hydro foil. Basically as the boat increases speed the skis at the front and side lift the boat above the water creating less drag and increasing speed

The card game is called Baccarat. It's what Bond played in the books and what he always plays in the movies, until Craig's "Casino Royale" came out and they switched to the game to Texas Hold'em, a variation of Poker.

Catching up on the posts from all four movies (reacted to as of this writing), I see some comments suggesting you can skip some movies. While I agree that the level of quality dips noticeably a few times, the movies are still James Bond movies, with all the glory and effort that entails. Even for the shaky entries in the franchise, it is the same production team, many of the same experienced crew from previous Bond efforts and they are still pushing the boundaries in areas where Bond movies excelled for decades, such as practical stunts. Even some of the "bad" movies paved the way for things we take for granted in modern film making. Admittedly, some of them also come with the excessive campiness and learning pains for new technologies (like digital compositing). And, it can't be denied that there are a few spectacular effects failures, too. In my opinion, that is just part of the Bond experience.

More, please. Also, if you ever manage to get your hands on one of the big boxed sets, there are literally DAYS of background material. They kept a lot of footage from things like site scouting and openings and production.

I just came here to post this very thing.

Definitely more Bond, and keep going in release order. And now that you’ve seen 4 Bonds I think you’re ready for Austin Powers, a spoof of and homage to the spy genre of the 60’s, but especially Bond..

Daniel Goldberg

Interesting....

26 really is a lot, especially since the quality starts to vary quite a bit after Connery. Also, I'm not a huge Moore fan, the spy who loved me is probably the only one of his that I would rewatch. Maybe Moonraker for the unintentional comedy. Also, she could skip a few of the later Brosnan films...

Looking into Jen's question about the film title, I fell down an interesting rabbit hole. Thunderball is another name for ball lightning, a rare phenomenon that can happen during electrical storms. Apparently, the energy of the ball is so intense, it warps the air around it to incur a nuclear fusion reaction. So, I guess the title is kind of weirdly connected to the plot.

Also the bond theme is good for a life soundtrack - going to the copier becomes an adventure with that in your buds

Hypnobob

Always liked Live and Let Die, Nobody Does It Better was good too.

Hypnobob

What was the best Bond song?

Mark M

If you can try and do all 26 movies it seems like a lot but in the end it's like an accomplishment.

Allan Molina

Lol sounds like fun!!

Jen M

I'm glad Domino survived she is my fav Bond girl to date,I love her black, white, black & white wardrobe very cool,"You Only Live Twice" '67 is next title song performed by Nancy Sinatra..or was it Tina Sinatra? plus more maniacal redheads for bondy to hook up with and kill :)

Celeste McAllister

Will watch the movie again (have seen it already at least 10 times) tonight with your reaction. Looking forward to it!

MaskripperOrg

Ohhh that's cool, I love the music!!

Jen M

I'd definitely like to keep going!

Jen M

Oh ya I bet those underwater sequences blew people's mind in 1965!

Jen M

Hi Jen, This Movie features my favourite aircraft The Vulcan Bomber, which we Britts used to simulate nuking America twice (documented on youtube and well worth watching) I used to be a patreon for one to maintain its upkeep which allowed me to sit in the cockpit. I hope you get to the next movie as this one YOLT is in my top 3 Bond Movies

RebRox65

Yay! Bond! The next one, You Only Live Twice, is a personal favorite (and has my favorite Bond opening). Looking forward to it! Thunderball made some major technological leaps in terms of underwater cinematography. Nothing like it had been done or seen before. Of course, it was also criticized because those underwater scenes slowed down the action.

SuicuneSol

Absolutely keep going. Next: "You Only Live Twice." Also just released Amazon Original "The Sound of 007 Documentary" All the music of Bondy revealing the history of Bond music.

Patrick Reynolds

Oh awesome! It's so fun to watch them close together!

Jen M

Lolll I was looking everywhere for a Bond emoji 😂 How do you like the books?
