Tombstone (1993) Full Length Reaction

🏆Winner of Guess the Views Game #2!🏆

Hell's coming with me

My first Western! I know absolutely nothing about the legends of the Old West so I was excited to learn! I loved Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Bill Paxton and Virgil in this! Apologies, I didn't realize they said they were actual brothers until later in the movie, but I got it eventually lol 😆 Any more Western suggestions?

*Please excuse my sniffles in this video, I have a cold 🤧*

Thank you so much for watching with me!

Tombstone (1993) Full Length Reaction

Comments

Val Kilmer acting is stunning in this movie. Johnny Ringo (Michael Biehn) was the good guy in The Terminator (1984) and Aliens (1986).

Welcome to a new genre! If you ever watch this again, you'll probably be surprised how many of the questions/wrong assumptions you had were covered in the narrative and/or character dialogue fairly early. For example, the opening "history" segment specifically said that Doc Holliday had tuberculosis, and now you know more of the "lingo" and will understand how early they told you specifics about the situation with his wife, etc.

Oh I really want to see The Abyss and The Rock! 👍👍

Jen M

yes, but nothing super amazing some made for TV movies, he is most known for Terminator and Aliens, there are a few other movies that he is in, "The Abyss" being one of them ( James Cameron sci fi movie ), then there is K2 (old movie about mountain climbing ), The Rock (not the main character but it was a good role). A movie called " the ride" from the 90's . He does have a few newer movies and I watched them cause I like the actor but nothing amazing. The Abyss and K2 are probably the best one's and if you ever watch the Rock look for him in there.

Ry Jo

Love him! Did he do more movies later on?

Jen M

yes Ringo is Kyle from terminator... and Hicks from Aliens

Ry Jo

I definitely want to see Dances with Wolves!

Jen M

Already on the calendar, but I know every movie may not appeal to everyone

Jen M

I recently went back and watched The Patriot and sadly it doesn't hold up imo.

Gideon James

You should watch The Patriot (Mel Gibson) for 4th of July.

This movie and Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner were released in theaters very close together. within six months if memory serves. Tombstone came first and it killed the box office for Wyatt Earp because who wants to see two movies based on the same character that soon. In the theater when Doc Holiday steps out of the shadows and says "I'm your Huckleberry" before the fight with Ringo, the entire theater erupted in cheers. Another "Not your typical western" if you have not seen it is "Dances with Wolves" with Kevin Costner. Much better than his Wyatt Earp movie.

James Young

It's also the story of Wyatt Earp's entire life. Not just the events surrounding his time at Tombstone.

Thanks for your thoughts on this! 👍

Awesome! Popping my copy of the movie in tonight to watch along with you Jen. If I could make an advisement though. This being you first western for the channel, a new genre is opening up to you. Once the YouTube edit goes up, there’s probably going to be a lot of people saying you now need to watch “Unforgiven” As many people can only think to recommend movies they’ve seen a dozen other movie reaction channels react to. When it comes to westerns, “Tombstone” and “Unforgiven” are the most viewed ones. I would strongly advise that you hold off on “Unforgiven” at least for a while. The thing about “Unforgiven” is, it’s also saying much on the genre of the western itself. There’s a kind of meta quality to “Unforgiven” that’s lost if you’re not familiar with the genre of the western, with all it’s tropes and conventions. Now you can still watch “Unforgiven” and enjoy that movie unto itself. But I’ll tell you, you’ll have a much greater understanding and appreciation for the film, if you become more familiar with the genre of the western in cinema. And in order to do that, you need to go back and watch some classic westerns. So before you get to “Unforgiven” I would say it’s essential you watch The Man With No Name Trilogy. These are the classic Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns that made Eastwood a star. When most people think of the western, they think of Clint Eastwood in these movies, this style, and that music. The Man With No Name Trilogy is directed by Sergio Leone, starring Clint. “A Fistful of Dollars” “For a Few Dollars More” “The Good The Bad and The Ugly” And in addition I’d also recommend these classic westerns. Now that you’ve earned your Leone Eastwood cred, some more landmark westerns to check out. “Once Upon A Time in the West” (1968) An epic of cinematic mastery. “The Wild Bunch” (1969) An important film and western in Hollywood history as it marked a transition and break from the classic style of western and even movies from what Hollywood had done before that. “The Searchers” (1956) A classic western from the two great Johns. The great Hollywood director John Ford and starring John Wayne. A true Hollywood classic and “Young Guns” (1988) So this was enormously popular western that was made at a time when no one was making westerns. It was pretty much assumed the genre of the western was deader than dead. This came out in the 80s, the decade of over the top, bombastic, action extravaganzas starring the likes of Schwarzenegger and Stallone. The western had fallen out of fashion and by that time seemed quaint and out of touch. The idea of the cowboy riding his horse on the desert planes with his six shooter all seemed so old fashioned. Then Young Guns came out and was an enormous success. So much so they even made a sequel. And I would even say that a movie like “Tombstone” was only possible in getting made because of the surprise and unexpected success of “Young Guns” “Tombstone coming out five years after “Young Guns”. As “Tombstone was based on a true story about real life, near mythological figures from the old west, so was “Young Guns” So that’s my preemptive advice before a dozens of people tell you to watch “Unforgiven” Take your time with the genre. Go back and look at the landmark westerns that made their cultural impact and defined the genre. They’re all great films. I am certain you’ll enjoy al of them. But having watched these westerns, you will then have a much greater understanding and appreciation for all that “Unforgiven” is doing.

Cool, thank you for the factoids! It's so cool it's based on real people. Hmm it's hard to picture Kevin Costner in the role of Wyatt Earp, I think that role belongs to Kurt Russell for me now!

Jen M

Awesome, hope you enjoy!!

Jen M

Ohhh I heard that one's good, nice 👍👍

Jen M

Oh cool, I'll add that to the Western list! Thank you!! 👍

Jen M

Oh nice, I will add that to the list! I agree, Val Kilmer really stood out in this 👍👍

Jen M

So now that I've had a chance to watch the reaction a few thoughts: -Yes, this is based on actual historical events. All the people featured in the film were real and most of the events actually happened, although the film takes significant creative liberties. The timeline is severely compressed in the movie and most of the big scenes, such as the Gunfight at the OK Corral are fluffed up for the film. Some key people are also excluded from the story, most notably the fact that Wyatt actually had several additional brothers and sisters. The one big scene in the movie that is almost assuredly pure fiction is the final standoff between Doc Holiday and Ringo. The real Ringo did die from a single gunshot to the head but most historians agree it was self-inflicted. However his death is a little mysterious so the film makers used that ambiguity to say that Doc killed him. -Ringo was played by Michael Biehn who was in fact "the Terminator guy", Kyle Reese to be exact. -The condensed timeline of this movie makes it action packed but it also makes it kind of hard to follow at times. The more you watch it the more you'll pick up and understand the complex relationships between all the characters. If you're interested in Wyatt Earp there is another movie, fittingly called "Wyatt Earp" from 1994 starring Kevin Costner. It's very long and not as exciting but it's a lot more true to the real story.

Thank you for doing Tombstone I am watching this today! 🐎

Jeremy Vickers

2010 TRUE GRIT with Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin! It’s a great one!

Jeremy Vickers

I recommend an underrated favorite western of mine, directed by Sam Raimi, called "The Quick and the Dead" (1995). It has an all-star cast with a female lead role, which is extremely rare for a western. It's a revenge tale with a bad-ass lady gunslinger as the protagonist. And I see you have another western coming up with "Django Unchained". Nice!

Mr. Writhms

One of my favorites, can’t wait to watch later today! Arguably Val Kilmer’s best performance of his career. You have to go to the classics with westerns, “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” is highly recommend.
