Psycho (1960) Full Length Reaction

Comments

No one has mentioned his more “comedic” films; “Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which is a screwball comedy, and “The Trouble with Harry”, which is a dark comedy. A small spoiler, but the trouble with Harry is that Harry is dead.

MrDannySteele

She was hopelessly in love!

David Martin

Oh crazy! Tho I don't know if less than half a million is worth blowing up my whole life and going on the run LOL 😆

Jen M

$40,000 in 1960 is nearly $400,000 today. Imagine carrying that kind of cash around.

David Martin

That's a great idea! 👍

Jen M

I fell asleep again. 🙃 So picking up at 6 this morning before work. I've not seen a lot of Hitchcock's films. But this is one I have a few times. Another that's been mentioned that I've seen a few times is Rope. So I'll recommend that one from my experience. Our favourite Welshman, Hopkins actually played Hitchcock in a 2012 film. So perhaps in the future if you've seen a string of his films. That one might be worth checking out either on or off the channel.

Daryl

Oh I haven't heard of that one, thanks! 👍

Jen M

Another great reaction! “Shadow Of A Doubt” remains my fav Hitchcock flick and it was his fav of all his films. For some reason no one has yet to react to it.🤔 I’ll admit there are plenty of Hitchcock classics to choose from so it’s hard to go wrong. “North By Northwest” is a lot of fun with a romantic flair. I’ve seen them all about a dozen times each…🤓

Doubting Thomas

No, but it was directed by a student of Hitchock's who watched him direct a movie of his back in the late 1960's. The movie is dedicated in his memory and is a homage to Psycho.

Thanks Miles! I've always tried really hard to not know things about movies before I watch them and I feel like I'm always glad I get to be surprised 👍 I don't even like to watch trailers for new movies! I really was stunned that Marion died and by how crazy Norman Bates was!! 😱 OHHH thank you for explaining the car seat thing, that makes a lot of sense! Definitely will be looking at more Hitchcock 👍

Jen M

Hello Jen! First off, may I say it is a true pleasure to watch one of your reacts. It’s almost like I was watching the movie for the first time and having it touch those same feelings again. Especially when you don’t have what I call, “Viewer Bias”. That’s when the reactor has some knowledge of the events / characters of the movies. Most reactors I’ve seen for “Psycho” have heard of, or seen, aspects of the movie (i.e. Norman Bates, the Bates Motel, etc.), so it’s not a “true” first reaction. An example: when you first see Norman you said, “Oh, he seems nice.” My response was a smile and a thought of, “Here we go.” And your incredulity that Marion Crane died about halfway through the movie was perfect. Imagine all of us watching in the audience when the movie first came out. Now, to clear up the “sliding across the seat to get out of a car” thing. You’re in good company as most reactors have the same response. Yes, back in the 60s that’s how we were taught to exit a car. Virtually all cars had bench seats. Bucket seats were only used in two-seater sports cars. Instructions for students was, once you’ve parked, on street parking (driver’s side next to the flow of traffic, passenger side next to the sidewalk), the driver shouldn’t just open his / her door and step out into the traffic lane. The person, for safety, should slide over to the passenger side and exit onto the sidewalk. This became an ingrained habit where most would exit their vehicle like that all the time, whether parked on the street or not. Other Hitchcock films to consider (* = my favorites): “The Birds” (1963) * “Rear Window” (1954) * “Vertigo” (1958) – a lot of people really like this one, not one of my favorites, though. “To Catch A Thief” (1955) * “Dial M For Murder” (1954) “North By Northwest” (1959) “Strangers On A Train” (1951)

Oh but it's not Hitchcock is it?

Jen M

Oh that's so crazy he never won an Oscar! I will definitely need to see more of his movies 👍

Jen M

Thanks! Cool fun fact about the syrup! 👍

Jen M

Never seen Halloween, might be too scary for me! 😱

Jen M

Jen, I think Alfred Hitchcock had you in mind when he shot the movie in black and white. Of course, color film was used for movies by 1960, but Hitchcock used black and white film to tone down the effect of the blood in the shower scene. People back then were not ready for that in color. They actually used chocolate syrup for the blood so it stood out more. Great reaction!

Mr. Writhms

Such a great movie, Hitchcock was so ahead of his time. The fact that he never won an Oscar for directing is one of the Academy's greatest crimes. I would highly recommend the Birds for another Hitchcock horror. For the more suspense thriller, I'd say Rear Window, Rope, North by Northwest, and Strangers on a Train. So many more, but I'd start with those.

Psycho 2 is a direct sequel which takes place 22 years later in the early 1980's. Psycho had multiple sequels but 2 is the only decent one. Norman actually comes off as sympathetic!

Tyler Gorash

I’m not sure if you’ve seen John Carpenter’s Halloween but some of the characters are named after Psycho

Rick Trujillo

Rear Window, North By Northwest, Frenzy, and Family Plot are my other favorites.

Tyler Gorash

My pleasure to welcome a newbie to Hitchcock's world. Try: Vertigo, Rear Window, North By Northwest, The Birds, Marnie, Dial M for Murder, Rope and To Catch a Thief...for starters. Vertigo is my personal favorite. 🙂
