SPOILER ALERT! - If you have not watched the show before, don't read the following review until you have! :)

NOW I understand Zuko so much better. I really like him as a character, and I clearly assumed his position in the Fire Nation incorrectly. Really enjoying his and Iroh's story (so sorry about how I pronounce that in this one. XD I have learned it properly now).

Momo!!

This episode was definitely fairly dark, and a massive moment for Aang. I bloomin' love how the siblings were able to talk him down and how they tried to soft what was about to be revealed.

Hope you had a great week, guys!!

Jason Isaacs AKA Lucius Malfoy does the voice for Commander Zhao

I appreciate it when children's media isn't afraid to delve into some deep emotions and serious topics, and AtLA does that perfectly. There's some great subtleties too, like the implication that Gyatso fought off many Fire Nation soldiers before he died, and how Zuko's ship, which was imposing compared to the Southern Water Tribe, is actually rather small. Fun fact, Momo is Japanese for peach! Don't worry about doing more than one episode at a time, it's whatever works best for you!

Madikuma95

You will find out later on why Iroh is traveling with Zuko... I won't spoil anything though.

Deadshot1999

Hey veggie, ive been watching you since your first harry potter reactions and thoroughly enjoyed the arcane videos, so you can emagine my excitement when you started my favourite tv show of all time, i was the commenter who said i watched it with my sisters 4 days after i was born, im 20 years old now and very broke but your vids are worth the price tag

Stan Flamey

There are commics actually. Most of them take place after the events of the series. There is only a couple small commics that take place during the series.

Deadshot1999

Wow, that would be very dark indeed!😮

Diego Zenhäusern

Ahh, I always wondered why he said that name like it was an inside joke at that moment...but Ialso was always to lazy to actually look it up🙈😅

Diego Zenhäusern

There is a fan theory that Gyatso killed those firebenders by expelling the air from the room, thus suffocating himself along with his attackers.

Hi Veggie! I'm still so excited that you're watching this show. I already know you're going to have so many thoughts about it! Zuko is my favorite character! I can't wait for you to learn more about his story. I think it makes sense that Sokka is one of your favorites so far. If all that ATLA characters were at Hogwarts, I think Sokka would be in Hufflepuff, Katara would be a Ravenclaw, Aang would be a Gryffindor, and Zuko would be in Slytherin.

Maria

Jason Isaacs is so good at being a bad guy lol! He’s our Lucius Malfoy AND our Commander Zhao! 😂

All of the bending styles are based on different forms of martial arts (I don't remember which ones, but I'm sure someone else will comment them). That said, they gave Zuko several moves that resemble break dancing because his VA (Dante Basco) does it irl. You can see it pretty clearly during the Agni Kai.

Zippy

Zuko has always been one of my favorite characters not only in ATLA but in any show and i think its undeniable he is the most complex, compelling and most well written character in the show and his character arc only gets better and better as the story goes on and you learn more about him. there are many aspects i was able to relate to as a kid/teen when it comes to zuko and many of his character traits and how he develops as a character throughout the show.

Regarding double episodes - while there are a few pairs of episodes that often get shown as double feature and are marked as such in some places, most of them still have pretty confined plots for each episode and can be watched individually. The only ones where I'd say it really makes sense to watch them together would be the very first two episodes, the book 1 finale (19+20) and the show finale (book 3 ep 18-21). The finale could also be broken down in two pairs (18/19 - 20/21), if you prefer that over an 80 minute movie.

I'd never have thought I'd hear a Brit call someone "obsessed" with tea ... :P Sure, the man likes his tea, but I think he often also uses it for other purposes, usually to calm down a situation just by mentioning it (just think about "calming jasmin tea" in ep1 and how he used it for polite conversation in this episode). But I find Iroh to be quite interesting on many levels. Even having seen the show many times, I'm still not sure what motivates some of this actions. E.g. his clumsiness handling the weapons in Zhao's tent: Did he get nervous when Zhao mentioned the Avatar and fumbled, like the lazy/cozy uncle he often appears to be (i.e. was it only played for laughs)? Or was it a moment shining light on his deeper personality, like his stopping Zhaos retaliation after the duel, where he sensed the danger of the topic and dropped the weapons on purpose to distract Zhao and give Zuko time to compose himself? Or his ordering more tea after Zuko kicked the table over: Is it just his tea-loving side that wants more tea, or does he have some deeper motives? Perhaps to slightly annoy Zhao while still appearing courteous? Perhaps to subtly remind Zuko to collect himself and calm down, by setting an example of how one might calmly handle spilled milk - eh, tea? Perhaps to gloss over the angry outburst and make it appear as though the tea was just all drunk up?

Lukas

I don't think this has anything to do with being or not being a kids show, but rather with how good and deep of a show it is. Kids shows do have all kinds of dark topics in them, but handled with a lot of care, like here, such that kids can watch them and learn something without being forever mentally scarred. You only get a quick view on the aftermath and it doesn't even dwell on it long enough for me to start imagining how exactly it happened. I'd contrast this with stuff like e.g. Game of Thrones and similar shows which often get all too explicit. Sure, you might instead prefer to call it a Family show or something like that, to more clearly state that it's not only for kids, but also for grown-ups, but I wouldn't say it's "not a kids show". It's certainly something that a kid could watch.

Lukas

Hey Veggie! I'm so glad you watched this episode and can understand why I take offense when people call it a kids show. I always reply saying, " Do you know any other kids shows that cover human genocide in the 3rd episode?" That usually does the trick. My dad started watching this show with me during the pandemic and admitted that despite his first impression, he thought it was pretty good. Hope you have a lovely day, see you in the next one.

Leah Boerigter

Fun fact about what you said when Momo showed up. While they ultimately didn't really do anything with it, the creators originally intended for Momo to be the reincarnation of Monk Gyatso...hence why his name sounds a bit like monkey.

Flufux

Doesn't help that there's a third character later on that has a name that is also very similar to Zuko's.

Flufux

It´s so amusing that first episode we all are so impressed by Zuko´s fire nation war ship (especially from Sokka´s POV) and this episode we see it´s so tiny compared to the usual ones ^^ Fire nation has the biggest names voicing them. Zuko by Dante Basco, Commander Zhao by Jason Isaacs. Soon a prison ship commander by George Takei and the firelord by Mark Hamill.

Embran

There are comics, but the ¨Book¨ thing is just something the writers of the show decided. You want earth bending, Veggie? Two episodes from now it´s not only the first time introduced but also the main focus. Also the lettuce/ cabbage reference are all from this upcoming one.

Embran

The show really comes in right away and lets you know this is not just like every other kids' show. While it can be light-hearted and fun, it also goes into some very serious and deep topics and does not shy away from the tragedy of war.

The design of the southern air temple has always given me vibes of FF9's Cleyra and Mount Dali! Surely it has to be at least partly inspired by the game

Steven

Book 1 (season 1) is by far the weakest of the series and it's still so good! To me 1 episode per video is fine, but there ARE certain episodes that are like 2-parters and the finale is a 4-parter and you should definitely try and watch those together :) First example is the Winter Solstice episodes.

Lisette C.

I won't tell you if this is akin to what will actually happen or not, but when I first watched it I had the theory that while all air benders were killed (just like they did with the water benders in the south pole), the non-benders and their way of life would still have survived. So they probably fled the temples and assimilated into the surrounding areas, carrying over their understanding of the soul and the world into their new societies. There are several characters where my brain immediately went "air nomad descendant maybe?" - this won't mean anything to you yet, mainly Tai Li! I also had the theory of balance. Like, just how the Avatar is meant to bring balance to the nations, doesn't it make sense that nature would balance out the 4 bendings as well? Wouldn't it make sense that if all the air benders were wiped out, that nature would just randomly produce new ones in people that have the right mindset or something? This magic system is all about balance, so that just makes sense to me. Again, these were my theories going into it. I won't tell you how right or wrong I was about either. But I think it's a fun thought experiment

PumpkinSparks

For the two parters, i would really recomend watching two in one go, next one is winter soltice or something, cabt quite remember the name, but its part one and two, and then its the final episodes off the season. Its so fun to follow along while you are watching.

Kael Johnsen

Don't worry too much about learning the names you will get them eventually! As for the color palette of each nation: Water is blue, grey, and white; the colors of ice and snow. Earth is green, brown, grey, and tan; the colors of plants, rocks, and dirt. Fire is red, grey, and black; the colors of fire, smoke, and ash. Air is red and yellow; the colors of tibetan monks (it's more based on the spiritual meaning than the element). But in the flashback in this episode the air nation is shown with very light and airy colors. So I'd say those count too ;) Also General Zhao is voiced by Jason Isaacs, aka Lucius Malfoy :D

Eve

I think it's fine to watch the series one episode at a time. I mean, that's how we experienced it as well. I do agree that you should watch the last 4 in one. I truly is like doing a movie to end the story (which is great), but it felt quite chunky watching them in bits. Episode 1&2 kinda feels like a two-parter pilot tbh (I believe most countries split their release, Germany certainly did, but some showed them as one entity). So now the meat of the story really gets built. There are 2 other two-parters ahead I would recommend watching in one go though. If you want, we can tell you what they are, so you know to watch 2 episodes in one. As for the "book 1: water" thing: Avatar doesn't really have seasons. They have books 😉

PumpkinSparks

Don't be to hard on yourself, you will get the names down. This is a heavy episode, had to face being the last Airbender though, it is interesting thinking maybe not all the air nomads are gone even if all the air benders are gone, it's a good theory.

Cari Ann

Don't worry about mixing up Zukos and Sokkas name. I've been watching Avatar since it aired on TV in Germany and I still mix up their names sometimes 🤷🏼‍♀️

PumpkinSparks

So glad you're getting so into it Veggie! Momo means Peach, which is the fruit he grabs out of Sokkas hand right before Aang names him 🥰 so cute!

Rey's Got Plans

Haha 😂 but if there was no air, Zuko wouldn't be around for long to cast fire anyways
