Here it is, guys!! The clear winner of the Standalone Movie Poll!

As always with movie reactions, you will need your own copy of The Princess Bride to sync up too! Any feedback on how I can improve the sync system is greatly appreciated! There will also be pop-ups every 10 minutes to help you re-sync if need be!

Quick Review below! -

-------------------------------------------------

I had no idea that this movie would be so beautiful! I LOVED it!! I was expecting something a lot more cynical, but it took the story really seriously!

WHAT a great cast!! For me, I think Fezzik is ma dude, but I also kinda loved Vizzini! XD I am so glad Inigo's story arc was completed!

This was such a treat! I was MEGA-confused with the first scene, but the whole thing was a delight! Thank you all for voting for it!! :)

My wife and I have coffee mugs that say, "Get Back Witch!", and "I'm not a witch, I'm your Wife!"

Have you seen It's a Wonderful Life, or Twelve Angry Men? Those would make really good reactions from you too.

Now that I know how real those emotions were for Mandy Patinkin, those whole scene just hits so much harder. That always felt like the most real moment of the movie, but it really gets to me now.

I think you could tell from the poll response that this movie is pretty universally loved, and it's for a good reason. It's such good storytelling, humor and just perfect dialogue. The framing device of the story being read to a child is from the book that the story was adapted from. It's a bit strange in the book, it's written from the perspective of the child later in life, discovering that his father had greatly abridged the book. It confused me a ton the first time I read it, cause it took me forever to realize I wasn't reading an actual foreword, but the whole thing was a part of the story.

So... I have only just realised I made a Spinal Tap "Don't turn it up to 11" joke during the Machine scene, without realising the actor from Spinal Tap is the guy that uses the Machine. .-.

A few things of note: Rob Reiner directed this movie; he also directed "Spinal Tap." The hat Reiner wore on screen in "Spinal Tap" is hanging in the little boy's room among all the merch. In addition to Rugen, whom you mentioned already, Billy Crystal was a mime in that movie. The soundtrack from "Princess Bride", which is definitely worth a listen, was written by Mark Knopfler, who I'm sure you know is from the Dire Straits. He also sings the final song. It's as beautiful an album as the movie is visually stunning, IMO. Lastly, I'm enjoying the Harry Potter reading immensely, but if you enjoy that, wait until you get a listen to the book, "The Princess Bride," by William Goldman (don't be confused by the reference in the movie to the author S. Morganstern. The book will explain. It is 100,000% better than this admittedly brilliant movie! Thanks, Veggie, for all you do. โค๏ธ

My favorite of the subtle jokes in this is Humperdinck sniffing the odorless poison, identifying it, and declaring that he'd bet his life on it (which Vizzini did). This is 100% my favorite movie of all time, and it has had a very profound impact on my life. The duel between Inigo and Westley taught me that opponents can still have honor and respect for each other, Humperdinck taught me that noble people can have a hidden dark side, and I never fail to respond to the request of a loved one with anything other than, "As you wish." Fun fact, the movie is a true story - in the sense that it really comes from William Goldman's father reading a story to him when sick. He discovered as an adult that the book his father was reading from was actually fairly dry and unremarkable in totality, and that his dad had essentially just distilled it down to the good parts. It is those good parts that have been retold here, for us, delivered to Fred Savage in the same way that it was delivered to William Goldman.

I just finished watching and I'm so glad you liked it so much! ๐Ÿ’œ There are a handful of comfort films and TV shows that I watch every now and then when I just want to feel good, and this is right up at the top of the list. Has been ever since I was a kid watching it with my dad because it's his favourite film. It's wholesome, hilarious, and most importantly earnest, as you pointed out. If it had been played as a parody, ร  la Robin Hood Men in Tights to use a relevant example, I don't think it would have stood the test of time and become a true classic. I can recite the script off the top of my head I've seen it so many times, and I'll happily watch it countless times more. Just a perfect film. For my favourite character, I probably have to go with Inigo Montoya. He's iconic for good reason and his line when killing Rugen breaks my heart every time. The actor who played him, Mandy Patinkin, has gone on record talking about that scene and how it was a release of real emotion stemming from the recent loss of his own father to cancer. He had this to say: "It is true โ€” a hundred percent true. I went outside in this castle, and walked around, and I kept talking to my dad. And I said, โ€˜Dad, Iโ€™m gonna get this guy.โ€™ From the minute I read the script, I knew. I said to Kath [Patinkinโ€™s wife]: I said, โ€˜Iโ€™m gonna do this part, because in my mind, if I get this six-fingered guy, that means I killed the cancer that killed my dad and Iโ€™ll get to visit my dad.โ€™โ€ That was always a powerful standout scene to me, a quality dose of drama in an otherwise light-hearted film, but hearing what Patinkin had to say about it only improves and strengthens it. This was a lot of fun to watch with you! I'm very curious what film will win the next poll, there were some heavy-hitters on there last time. If you're still taking suggestions, and want something a bit more outside-the-box and surreal, I'd love to see your reaction to "Donnie Darko" (preferably the original theatrical version, not the Director's Cut - both are good, but I grew up with the original), one of my other favourite movies :) Thanks Veggie!

Jordan McLaren

Thanks for the great reaction! Love this movie!

The castle scenes were filmed at a medieval house called Haddon Hall, in Derbyshire, which is often used for films and TV series set in the Tudor times and has been the main location for multiple adaptations of Jane Eyre. I didn't know that The Princess Bride was filmed there until I visited it and recognised the courtyard. There are lots of well known stories about filming The Princess Bride, including Billy Crystal causing chaos as Miracle Max. The Director Rob Reiner and Cary Elwes (Westley) had to leave the set because Billy Crystal's improvisation made them laugh too much. Cary had to be replaced with a dummy because he was meant to be "mostly dead", & Mandy Patinkin (Inigo) sustained a bruised rib from trying to hold his laughter in. Cary was genuinely knocked out when Christopher Guest (Count Tyrone Rugen) hit him on the head. Cary had asked him to make it believable. Cary and Mandy became very good fencers after training for several months (first left handed, then right handed) before filming the infamous sword fight. Andre the Giant said he had very fond memories of filming The Princess Bride because no one looked at him differently for his size. There are many more interesting stories, and as JenM has suggested, it is worth reading or listening to Cary Elwes' book โ€˜As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales From the Making of The Princess Brideโ€™.

KateFS

Veggie, I think you would really enjoy the Cary Elwes (Wesley) book โ€˜As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales From the Making of The Princess Brideโ€™. Even better if you do the audio version as Cary reads it himself. It is an absolute delight.

I was so excited to watch this reaction that I rented a copy of the movie straight away so I could watch along even though I can pretty much recite this movie by memory I've seen it that many times. I hate spending money but really wanted to watch this. Loving the content Veggie. You're always so sincere and genuine and it really shows . Glad you liked the movie, always been one of my favourites :)

Danielle Stennett

Oh! Iโ€™m really looking forward to this. This movie seems like just your vibe. Silly but thoughtful, charming, and very earnest.

Audra Foxgrove

Oooh, I canโ€™t wait until I have the time to watch this ๐Ÿ˜

Ashley Evers

Well this is exciting!!! So glad I get to see you experience this movie for the first time. It is absolutely timeless.
