OH MY GOODNESS..... XD

Xander is a disgrace in this one!!  Really good to see Amy back, I think she could be a great semi-recurring character!

I really enjoyed this one, and found it weirdly stressful, even though it could be put down as a 'comedy' side-quest!

So sorry we are a couple of days late this week!  Had to get other things together, but managed to at least it the weekend! :)

Love you, guys!  I REALLY hope Xander learns a very important lesson from this one.. XD

As always, if you are clicking on this just after it was posted, you may need to download it to watch! This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

Buffy Fridays! Season 2 Episode 16 First Time Reaction!

I agree 100% with you, I think a lot of people (who don't like Xander) use this episode to try to make out he is something he is not, he is not perfect but nobody is, for some reason he gets treated far more harshly than others who have done far worse things.

I think calling Xander a disgrace is very harsh, he was stupid for doing the spell to get revenge on Cordi yes! but the second he spotted Buffy was under the spell he came clean and told Giles

chris allen

I didn't notice that in the episode (since I wasn't really paying attention to what she was saying during the spell) but that really is a disapointingly obvious mistake😕

You probably did see a boom mic. That is why people do not like the Remastered version. Buffy was shot for 4:3 ratio, which is what old TVs had. Nowadays, most TVs have a 16:9 Widescreen ratio. See, the problem is, the Camera _shot_ the footage in 16:9 Ratio - but wheedon knew which parts would be in the shot and which wouldn't. The Cameramen? would have been out of shot in the original framerate. You have multiple things like this, especially aggregious in Angel with his reflection sometimes, because the Cameratricks they used don't work if you can see past what the createor had intended The Remastered Version is also really, _really_ bright, which often lessens the mood https://www.themarysue.com/remastered-buffy-is-a-butt/ This side shows a few comprisons where you can see how aggregious it sometimes is.

Okay, I know this is a nitpick, but... DIANA IS NOT THE GODESS OF LOVE!!!! Diana is the Roman Name for Artemis, A _virging_ Godess, that never lets any man near her, and the only one that tried got turned into a deer and was ripped apart by his own hounds. She would be the LAST Godess to call on for a lovespell. And what really iffs me about this is that someone in the team _must_ have had some greek mythology Ideas, because _Hecate_ is slotted in the right position, as the Godess of Witchcraft (among other things) And it is not as if Venus/Aphrodite is an unknown Godess, so why on earth not go for the _actual_ Godess of love? Even someone like Hera/Juno would have made more sense, since she is a godess of motherhood and marriage, but Diana/Artemis is practically the one wrong answer you could give, besides Athena

Without spoiling anything too much, there's a lot more witchcraft still to come so hopefully your enjoyment will continue! XD

Do you think maybe the spell went wrong because they prayed to the goddess of Maidenhood instead of an actual love goddess? (I don’t actually think this, the lazy research just irks me)

Ashley Evers

Yeah, Cordelia being like: "You tried to drug me to get back together with me against my will? Awww, that's sweet!" Was really iffy as well. I guess I already had kinda surpressed that again when I wrote my comment😅

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah, exactly. Also, the fact that Cordelia is charmed instead of HORRIFIED when she finds out the love spell was for her. No one told HER that Xander was planning to break up with her after casting it (which honestly, I struggle to believe he would have followed through with). He does not extend the same respect and genuine care he shows Buffy to Cordelia, or this episode wouldn’t have happened. I’ve heard people say that Xander is essentially an author self insert character, which is probably all you need to know to get a decent picture of the kind of behind the scenes issues that went on.

Ashley Evers

Couldn’t have put it better myself!! I feel exactly the same about everything.

Giorgia M

I had the same thought!

I'm not sure how to feel about this episode: On the one hand, the comedy was pure gold! But on the other hand: What Xander did was a horrendous and disgusting violation of privacy and free will and I really hope he solidly learned his lesson! I'll give him a pass this time since (on a rewatch of some scenes after reading the comments) I believe that he really immediatly stopped to go after Buffy once he realized that she was under the spell and because he then went fairly quickly to Giles to beg for help. That said: Buffy's pep talk to him at the end and the overall vibe that he's "a great guy after all" definitely doesn't sit right with me! And it really feels like a product of the time (and potentially the questionable beliefs of whoever wrote this episode... I don't know and I actually don't want to know...). Because not taking advantage of someone who is clearly not in control of themselves doesn't make you "a great guy" (or girl for that matter) but just a DECENT human being! To end on a lighter note: "Ratty the vampire slayer" had me dying😂😅

Diego Zenhäusern

Also, later when Angelus grabs Xander outside of Buffy's house, he tells him, "If it's any consolation, I feel very close to you right now." ... I'm thinking Angelus was also feeling a little something for Xander due to the spell. But not enough to sway him too far lol.

From what I can tell, it looked like Xander was more in shock when Buffy is first coming on to him in the library. He probably just thought his Buffy dreams were finally coming true with her returning his feelings, but you can tell he's confused - "you know I'm Xander, right?". I don't think he was taking advantage of her here, because I honestly don't think he knew she was under the love spell at this point. When Amy came by saying the spell didn't go right, it still didn't register for him that it had worked on Buffy instead, because at that point, he just thought that it hadn't worked on Cordelia and was more interested in getting back into the library to be with Buffy. Since he really likes Buffy, he no longer cared about the spell or about making Cordelia love him again. It wasn't until Amy started hitting on Xander and saying the exact same thing Buffy told him (how "you can see someone everyday but not really see them") that he realized that Buffy was definitely under the spell, so he looks sad and runs away. By the time he runs into Willow, he can tell her right away what is happening, because she is the first person he talks to after he realizes what happened with the spell. While Xander is definitely in the wrong for doing the love spell, he did do some things that show his heart was in the right place afterward. When he knew Buffy was under the love spell, he didn't take advantage of her, though he probably wanted to, and could have easily done so. He also went (fairly) straight to Giles asking for help when he knew he was in way over his head. He owned up to his mistake so Giles could work on reversing the damage.

I wouldn’t have thought we’d get this episode as I know you’ve got a lot on!!! Very excited!!

Great reaction! Not my top favorite episode, but it's always enjoyable watching with you. From the reactions of the different guys in the school during Xander's pimp-walk, it appeared some of them were infatuated, and so they were likely attracted to men and therefore affected by the spell. Some of them, however, as Oz so beautifully demonstrated with a punch, were glaring at Xander because the girls -- including *their* girls -- were wanting him. So I do think it was a mix of some guys infatatuated and others angry. When you said, "Joyce is safe for now," I cracked up, knowing where Xander and Cordelia were going! My favorite part of this show is Drusilla with Xander. While I couldn't claim Amy as one of my favorite characters in the series as a whole, she is definitely interesting and adds some witchy spice to the episodes she is in.

RavenLord

I hate on Xander a lot - he's done a lot of stuff that doesn't hold up. I didn't actually feel this episode was anywhere near as bad as other things he's already done. His plan for Cordelia was vindictive, it's true, but he is a teenager who has just been heartbroken. And as it's been pointed out, Xander had no idea that Buffy was under the spell when she hit on him the first time because he had no reason to believe that the spell would work on Buffy (I mean, the locket never belonged to Buffy) - he just thought the spell didn't work at all. As soon as he heard Amy say the same thing that Buffy did, he was crushed and immediately stopped accepting any advances. He did get what he deserved, and it was awful to invoke the dark arts for such petty reasons... but I don't think the ending of this episode is unearned. That said, I totally understand your outrage given how you thought the initial encounter with Buffy played out.
