Old School Monsters [Monster Thursday]

There are so many monsters in the back editions, that we are going to be doing a few more old school monsters in the future. Hope you like this first installment! -Stephen

This time, we do not have a single family of monsters but rather a few monsters taken from the various editions before 5e. We get to see so many strange and horrifying creatures when researching for our Deep Dives that we are so confused that they haven't found a home in 5e yet. Maybe its because they are too weird, or horrifying, or maybe they've just been forgotten, slowly waiting for someone to come along and show them so love.

1st Edition - Penanggalan
Penanggalan's are vampires. Now, we have plenty of the normal vampires like Strahd, but these are fucked up vampires. The penanggalan is a floating head with trailing viscera and organs, slowly feeding on your community.  Image of the Penanggalan

2nd Edition - Al-Jahar (Dazzle)
These humanoids feed off the emotions of others, devouring strong emotions of violence, hatred and greed. Thanks to their ability to change their form, they often appear as beautiful people, manipulating the emotions of others. Image of the Dazzle

3rd Edition - Quaraphon Brute
Is it a centaur? Is it a giant? Maybe it's a giant's dog? Who knows, except... you probably shouldn't say that to their face. They are mean, territorial and are great brutes. They live out as nomads in the plains, charging down prey and taking on creatures they think are strong enough to be a challenge. Image of the Quaraphon

4th Edition - Raavasta
In 4th edition, there was a great wrong done to the universe. My favorite yugoloth, the arcanaloth, was removed from that edition and instead replaced with the Raavasta... while it hurts to know that the arcanaloth was seen as redundant in 4e, at least the Raavasta is a fun fox assassin thing that can really bring in the pain and murder. Hope you enjoy all these new (err.... old?) monsters and they can find a comfy home in your world, horrifying your players and providing plenty of roleplaying potential!

If you have ideas for monsters or just a scrap of lore you want to see statblocks for, let us know! We may surprise you. :)
