Honestly, I'd rather Subaru died from the Whale than the cringy embarrassment that would have been had the whale stood him up. xD Vain. I know. But he's gone through so much!! He needed this!
We also got to talking about how he had promised so much in this deal. Can he even make such a deal rightfully? He's even giving up he's "metia" schtick! I guess he's putting it all on the line.
But what do you think about the whole "pride" implications? Do you think Subaru has been prideful in the past? What are your thoughts?

Fun fact about the ringtone: Subaru's ringtone is from a 70s anime called "Dog of Flanders" which the author of Re:Zero watched as a kid. The ground dragon shares that same name as the dog from the show.

2021-08-24 05:45:47 +0000 UTCYes, this negotiation as well as the introduction of the five factions in episode 12-13 is the two points were I find the cut content the hardest to swallow.. Very much interesting information is sadly lost, although I guess the pacing worked out alright in return.. Great explanation!

2021-08-23 17:29:23 +0000 UTCWhite Fox does a great job on Re:Zero. However, as a LN reader, I really think that the negotiation is an important part which can show Subaru's development. It is too bad to see that so many details are cut or a bit altered. So ,here I want to give out all the clues (some only can found from LN) to let Subaru figure out a solution to overcome the situation in this arc and let you guys enjoy and understand more. (Subaru actually put alot of thought behind it) Here are the information that Subaru knows from the first 3 loops (1)After the royal selection, information of Emilia spreads out. There is no doubt that witch's cults will attack Emilia. (2)Some witch's cults disperse and hide around Roswaal's mansion. They plan to attack after several days. Their leader Betageuse has an ability of "Unseen hand" and only Subaaru can observe the hands now. (3)Subaru has rich Witch's smell. So, witch's cults would not attack him actively. (4)Roswaal has to visit some powerful people for support so Subaru and Rem can't contact him. (5)It needs at least half of a day for Subaru going back to the mansion. After the White Whale blocks the pathway, Subaru has to spend at least two days to go to the mansion. (6)Reinhard left the capital and knights would not take action. (7)White Whale, the creature of the Witch, it is so elusive and cause a lot destruction and death, including the previous Master Swordsman. After some time, it will appear and blocks the pathway between Roswaal's mansion and the capital. (8)There is a contract between Crusch and Emilia. Also, Subaru as a guest is treated in Crusch's mansion. (9)The traffic in and out from Crusch's mansion is busy, even though at night. (10)From Anastasia, Crusch collects a lot iron products such as armors, leading the raising of price. Also, ground dragons are also scarce at that time. (11)Russell is a businessman relating with financial matters in the capital. Also, the discussion between Russell and Crusch is not smooth, but Russell left the words: "If Crusch-sama's goal is attained, it also benefits us and suits Wilhelm-dono's desire." (12)Crusch can recognize lies by using an ability, (13)Because of high tax rates of trades, Crusch is unwelcome among businessmen.(This is mentioned in LN) (14)Anastasia is collecting information of Crusch. Also, her mercenary group Fang of Steel stays in the capital. Hints are all collected: From (1) and (4), Subaru finally finds a question. Why Roswaal allows Rem staying with Subaru but not protecting Emilia in the mansion? Especially the defense power of Roswaal's mansion is extremely low. Therefore, it can be concluded that Rem has other mission. According to (8), Rem may discuss with Crusch about something, most possible, forming alliance. By asking Rem, Subaru knows new facts. (15)Emilia is trying to form alliance with Crusch. The bargaining chip given from Roswaal is right of mining of magic stone. But Crusch is not satisfied so the discussion faces difficulties. (16)Roswaal does not allow Rem to tell Subaru about her real mission, unless Subaru finds it by himself. After that, Rem can give hime the right of negotiation and follow Subaru's instructions. (Roswaal acting a bit sus ngl) Then Subaru needs to find out how to solve the problem. From (2), (5) and (7), Subaru needs to find supports to help him arrive the mansion on time. The easiest supporters should be Crusch, because of (6) and (8). To negotiate, Subaru must know what Crusch needs and wants. From (9) and (10), Crusch is doing some preparation, may be a war. From (11) and (13), Crusch needs to do something to get businessmen's support to win the royal selection. Therefore, also from (6), Crusch may want to crusade White Whale. If not, the information of White Whale can also help Crusch and businessmen to reduce loss of lives and properties. So, Subaru finds Russell because of (11), and use the phone to get his help. From (14), Subaru thinks the information is also useful for Anastasia so he also contacts her. As a result, because of the two big businessmen, Crusch cannot contempt the information from Subaru. Lastly, because of (12), Subaru cannot lie, so he uses Rem. As Rem does not know the truth that how Subaru knows the mabeast attack in 1x9-11, so when she sees the metia, she thinks she knows the reason and explains to Crusch. As she thinks that is a "fact", so Crusch would not know that is actually a lie. After all of the consideration, the negotiation finally succeed. How great Subaru!!!
