Yeah, they did write themselves a bit into a corner with Sherlocks "suicide" and there was no smart way to get out of it. Whatever the explanation would be, fans would not be fully satisfied, so they played the different versions scenario. But I love the full on message from writers to the viewers when Anderson says "not the way I would have done it" and Sherlock replies "Everyone's a critic".
