Great point. And there is a deep history of this going back to white settler anxieties about 1) Native attacks--always characterized as evidence of an incurable Native savagery and not read as a defensive response to territorial encroachment--and 2) slave revolt.

I would just like to state that I do not own Michael and Me on DVD. I borrowed it and me and Michael from Scarecrow Video in Seattle, probably the first time they've been checked out in a decade.

The argument that you guys make around the 2A and countering oppression seems a little week. The fact that all the 2A “guys” also support oppression in this moment isn’t a failure of the idea of the armed citizenry. It just has to do with all the gun guys also being conservative, while armed leftists are few and far in between. There is also the point that Americans tend to believe they have a lot to lose, and therefor won’t do anything to fight back even if they say thats the reason that they arm them selves. On the idea of illogical gun laws in California being due to lobbying, it just boils down to politicians having no idea what they’re talking about, no gun manufacturer is lobbying for these weird California style AR setups meant to skirt laws. You see this in Canada too, to a much greater degree.

Actually, that same guy also reviewed Kony 2012 which is surely crying out for the Michael and Us treatment.

This film has two reviews on Letterboxd- Will and some guy who rewatched it in 2015 and used to like it but then decided Elder is just as bad as Michael Moore.

I always confuse Douthat with Rod Dreher. Would that be making a faux-pas? I would note that Elder's obsession with 'protecting oneself' is of a piece with all the commentary on Fox News. The absolute justification for everything on the American right is 'being safe'. War in the Middle East will make them safer. ICE raids will make them safer. Stand-your-ground laws will make them safer. Double-tap killings of drug boat crews will make them safer. International law must be ignored to make them safer. Safety, it seems, is built on the bodies of criminals and non-Americans. It's a death-cult, as I am not the first to say.

Luke, couldn’t help but find echoes of the Lockheed Martin factory scene in BforC (one you guys didn’t take too seriously, if I remember correctly) in your point on imperial violence rebounding at home

Did Trump listen to Chapo #1000? ”If this credit card interest cap bill doesn’t pass, then little Jimmy won’t be able to purchase a new Xbox… ”

Dry Buttplug

I first heard of Larry Elder in college, so I want to say like 2000? My classmate had his book and he seemed to be another stalwart clone of the O’Reilly type.

The “Chapo boys” are always trying to get me to admit that Trump is funny. That shtick was old a LONG time ago, if you ask me. Great episode. 👍🏽

I can't seem to get out of the habit of pronouncing it "douche-knob"

Worf Worfstofferson, and I'm da Venari Ral

Its pronounced "doubt-hat"

I forgot to tell y’all that my wonderful brother, a self-described neoconfederate who goes by James C. Calhoun on Twitter, was really excited for Larry Elder’s 2024 run, if only because he apparently wanted all trans people to be forced into the army to genocide us (ha ha, I guess.)
