Comments

Ratings Robbie: 8.5. He says his rating went up while they were discussing the episode. Originally Robbie was bothered by some "logic problems" and "blocking." But "in spite of that, it's such a great episode." Armin: 8.7. His score because "the performances are stupendous." And because it's a "non-Starfleet sort of episode," a character-study of Garak. Andy Robinson: 9. He says it is probably his favorite DS9 episode. "There's no such thing as perfection, but for me this comes as close to perfection, as an actor, as it gets." Garrett: 8.8. No further commentary from him. Patreon higher-tier fans: 8.6. Several people say "Wow!" when the fans' score of 8.6 is announced. Garrett says: "That is the highest [Patreon fan rating] that we have received." "Kudos to you, Mr Robinson." "I'll take them!" (1:28:50 to 1:31:15)

Yule Tide

24:00 to 29:00 --- Andy Robinson says the "reason [he] got the job" of playing Garak on DS9 "was because Sid and I had some chemistry." He explains that this was based around, played as (with being made open), some kind of romantic-like attraction. He elaborates on this for several minutes which I'll transcribe here. Andy Robinson: "They were looking for a storyline for Sid's character. All the other regular characters were pretty much established, but Sid was out in the cold. They created Garak and his storyline to get Sid going in the series." "(Sid and I) hadn't even met. From the very first moment we met, when I had all my makeup and my gear on, I 'was' Garak. I but struggling with what to do with Garak. Im playing this alien, I've got alp thg is c**p on me, im sweating like a pig. I'm suffocating because I'm claustrophobic. I'm wondering, 'Oh, God. I dont know if I can do this.' Then I go out on set for our first scene. And I see Sid. He is one of the most beautiful men I have ever seen. And I thought, 'Oh! That's it!' Beaides whatever Garak is trying to leverage in terms of information from a Starfleet officer, Garak is also 'knocked out' by him. He is truly attracted to him! And Sid picked that up right away. There was a moment, in that very first scene, where I go around behind him and I put my hand on his shoulder and say, 'Dr Bashir, I presume?' And Sid's reaction was SO great. It was perfect. And the writers picked up on that right away. It became a fixture: all those episodes that began with us in the Replomat." Andy Robinson was talking about filming of S1E2, I believe, which would be late 1992. About this episode, S3E2, he adds this: "This is the episode where the relationship is furthered, because up until this point it's the same. Garak has been his--" Armin chimes in "--mendaciois self." Andy says: "That's it. Mendacious. But charming! But very much hooked into Julian [Dr Bashir]. I mean, really. Very emotionally attached in his own way. And Julian wanted that kind of association. That 'hit' he is getting from being with a Cardasdian of dubious [nature]. Whatever he is, Garak is more than just a tailor." After prompting from Garrett, Andy Robinson adds that Garak as a character was not "gay," and that he was imagining what an alien's sexuality might be and how it might express. Garrett several times prompts the word "omnisexual," which Andy Robinson doesn't disagree with. He adds this, about reactions to the January 1993 S1E2 introduction of the Garak--Bashir interplay: "The gay community picked up on that first scene IMMEDITALELY. They knew exactly what Garak was about. That is one reason why Garak became a gay icon."

Yule Tide

11:05 to about 12:30 --- Andy Robinson on how he had originally auditioned for the role of Odo, "three times," in what must be aroud late 1992. (Before the premier in Jan 1993). And nearly didn't take the role of Garak but for his wife's "encouragement." Andy Robinson says in this podcast episode: "Of course, the right man for the job [for the "Odo" role]: Renee. I say that quite sincerely." "But then, when they called me a week or so later, and they said 'Listen, there's this role in an episode...' I said, 'Okay, then offer it to me!' They said, 'No, you have to come in [to audition for the part of Garak].' I said, 'Why do I have to come in? I've been there three times!' They said, 'they really want you to come in'. I said, 'No. Forget it. If you want me, offer it to me.' And Irene, my wife, heard me. And Irene said, 'You know, there are Bill's to be paid. The phone's not ringing off the hook. Just go down there!' I said, 'Ugh. Okay.' [Garret laughing]. And thank God... She was right, of course!"

Yule Tide

Yes indeed when you consider a future episode involving Garak in a tight space.

ST Fan CB

Did anyone catch it when Andrew said he was claustrophobic? I find that VERY interesting

Ryan Wagner

To Robbie's missing scene...Garak: "Obsidian Order? What? Is that a new jewelery line I should look into?"

Kasey Weaver

This was one of the best Delta Flyer Podcast episodes ever. Hearing Garrett, Robby, Armin, and Andy altogether was beautifully done. The insight that Andy provided into his portrayal was some of the best actor commentary I’ve ever listened to.

BallparkDude

This was a fabulous episode, thanks to Andy for all his great work. But also huge shout out to GaWa, super excited for lower decks!

M Mamberg

Just saw the Lower Decks Season 5 preview - WooHoo!!!

Clark Ochikubo

Yes Dear works!

ChrisB

Garrett! Just saw the preview for "Lower Decks: Season 5." YOU'RE BACK!!! YESSSS!!!!!

Bethany Grace Howe

Garak is hugely charismatic!

ChrisB

Totally disagree with the inference that Bashir is the only doc on DS9. Regarding permission, it is very clear Bashir is going rogue. Try to suspend your disbelief!

ChrisB

Yeah I thought it was established even in the original series and TNG that communication can be made through monitors on the ships, so I had always assumed this would be the same with cardassian stations. I also recall quark uses a monitor on-screen to call within the station. I can’t recall the episode though, not sure if it’s already been reviewed or is yet to come.

Veronica

I'm reading it right now! It's an awesome book. I really wanted to find a hardcopy of it but ended up getting an ebook version, physical copies are hard to find!

Z M

You can’t judge a book by its cover. You can’t judge a story by its teller.

Mary Ann B

What an absolute delight Andrew Robinson is. And how lucky were we to have watched him be a part of this series! Now I need to buy A Stitch in Time as well!

Vicky Thompson

I was so excited to see Andy Robinson on this episode that I hurried and caught up on the episodes I’d missed (driving across the US helped as well). A word of warning to Garrett and Robbie, if it’s not too late: if you want to avoid major spoilers for the rest of the show, I would wait to read Mr. Robinson’s wonderful book.

Chase

Andy’s book A Stitch in Time is excellent! The audiobook is outstanding. He does all the voices amazingly! I highly recommend it.

ChrisB

Oh no

ChrisB

So I’m a teacher. My principal walked into my room while I was grading papers and heard the conversation at the 50 minute mark WAY out of context.

David Weston

In the weeds again about making calls!

ChrisB

The call from Quark did not sound like an emergency…it sounded strange.

ChrisB

So you guys know that you don’t have to hear a conversation to know that it’s going off the rails just paying attention to body language and facial expressions would tell you that if you are observant…And Kira is observant, and you better believe she’s watching Garak. That tracks…NO flaw.

ChrisB

Couldn't wait for this episode

Chris Berck

What an absolute treat.

Una McCormack

I absolutely love Andrew Robinson!!! So excited to hear him on the show!
