I’m gonna push back on the notion that DS9 doesn’t need Quark. They absolutely do need him because of the bar and the way he runs it. They use Quark in certain ways that’s necessary. He also has a character arc. You also have the suspend disbelief… and I can’t imagine DS9 without Quark!

ChrisB

The machine did nothing in the racquetball game, Quark fixed the whole game in the Holosuite!!!

ChrisB

Rosalind Chao totally kills it. Every episode is Keiko O’Brien. They both have such chemistry as well. It’s just great casting.

ChrisB

I don’t think it’s a stretch that Martus got conned by the older woman. She was a better con artist than he was. He’s not telepathic. He didn’t see it coming. That’s all that happened.

ChrisB

Martis is smarmy and a cad and a con artist!

ChrisB

Let me try to explain the luck. It seems that when the luck is good people get the deals they want, get the money they want, they are able to do the plans as they want to and beyond. When their luck turns, everything goes south, which could look like physical harm illness, destitution, being thrown out of their residence or business, etc.

ChrisB

Of course Martus is good with words…he is a con artist!

ChrisB

Martus is conning Rowana…con artist at work with the crystal.

ChrisB

Yes, a mess but oh so much fun!

ChrisB

I would have LOVED to have seen Whoopi Goldberg bring Guinan to DS9!

Vicky Thompson

Cos describes being dead to Mazur as being fortunate, so he does get lucky and wins in the end.

Richard Knijnenburg

This episode is a mess, it's hard to even follow because the concepts are so poorly explained. totally saved by the Bashir-O'Brien B-plot. This is something that will happen from time to time in DS9.

Elias Nordling

The short basketball player you're thinking of is Muggsy Bogues, who is 5-3. He spent 14 years in the NBA, retiring in 2001.

Two things, Budweiser is available on tap in the kelvin universe - it’s amazing what sponsorship can do. Also! Napoleon introduced a luck factor into the process the grande army used when promoting officers - they would look at how lucky the officer had been in the field , evading shot, surviving encounters, random lucky happenstance, and this played into their decision to promote them to a higher rank. The French army, I’ve been told, still uses a similar metric today. So luck in officialdom is a thing. I probably come down in the middle, like Armin, when it comes to luck. That last mystical part of my brain, I was brought up catholic in Ireland, I no longer believe, but the mysticism and belief in that sort of thing sometimes rears up from the mud. Jeremiah
