2024-07-21 16:55:57 +0000 UTCI enjoyed hearing this episode critic. I also agree that the story had something to it but I always wondered why this episode did not work for me. To me it was the makeup and costumes. But you are right that the passing is very slow and that was something I did not catch. I feel like this should not have been so slow. I also did not catch till Armin pointed it out how many long panning shots there are or unnecessary scenes that don’t help tell the overall story very well.

2024-07-17 19:44:42 +0000 UTCThe Bajorans had every right to turn down the Skrreeans’ request to settle on their planet, and Haneek’s (and her kid’s) sense of entitlement was so strong she became salty af over it. What she says to Kira in the end wasn’t a “mic drop” moment. It was condescending, rude and full of spite.

2024-07-14 21:32:31 +0000 UTCMy favourite thing about the Delta Flyers is that even when the episode itself is kind of just average, as this one is, they still always have an interesting discussion about it, often analysing why it didn't quite work. To then have a delightful guest host like Kitty join in makes it even better! It was wonderful hearing her insights, not only about the Trek production, but also about her work with the unions and PanCan. It's a shame she wasn't given a more major recurring role on the show, so we could have been graced with her presence on the podcast more often!

2024-07-11 15:47:57 +0000 UTCMy rating: 6.5, There was a lot of potential in the story to do something bold, and it just fell pretty flat for me. Guest performances were good, highlighted by Deborah May as Haneek. The ending was satisfying, but I felt like the episode didn't quite know what exactly it wanted to say. Theme: Diversity is one of humanity's greatest strengths, but too often it is seen as a weakness. Missing scene: Agree with whoever said it in the podcast, that I wanted more of the relationship between Haneek and Tumak. Maybe that would have made his ending scene more impactful to the overall storyline.

2024-07-10 04:00:15 +0000 UTCI didn’t think the point was that their women were men, I thought it was that their women were making the same mistakes as the old stereotype of human men. They were still an alien race.

2024-07-10 02:51:43 +0000 UTCQuarks attitude isn’t wrong, it’s him being honest to his morality. Confused why the analysis is turning towards one point of view, as the beauty of DS9 is it champions the different perspectives and allows for multiple vantage points to the same fact pattern. Quark be concerned for his business is not an inherently bad instinct.

2024-07-10 02:08:46 +0000 UTCRDM be like - "I don't know what pumice is". Hi Larious I wonder why it was not mentioned that Andrew Koenig was the son of Walter Koenig (Chekov on TOS), played "Boner" on Growing Pains and committed suicide in 2010? RDM says for the 2nd or 3rd time that 5 is the average rating - this is incorrect. 5 is the approximate halfway point in their established rating "system" and would be a hypothetical mid point or "median" for ratings in a 1-10 rating system but it is far from the groups average or "mean" rating. How can 5 be the average rating when they never (maybe once) rate an episode below 5? Their actual average or mean rating is somewhere between 7 and 7.5. There is a big difference between the statistical terms median, mode and mean. So given this information, RDM's rating is BELOW average. Not buying the whole "we don't have enough food story either. I seem to remember Bajor getting some "industrial sized replicators" from the Federation at some point. Even if they didn't get those yet, they still have regular ones and those can make food from other elements. While I am sure crops grown naturally taste better and are better for you (assuming), they can feed the population with replicators. Also nod to the post above that stated that the Federation is not going to let them starve when they have their eye on getting Bajor into the Federation. I think the better story would have been them rejecting the new peeps just out of fear or racism which would have further fed into the other smaller themes of racism playing out on the station. I would invite the group to watch the part of the episode again where Tumok is picking up stuff in the shop. He is picking everything up with his LEFT hand. It is his RIGHT hand that is injured and he never picks anything up with it. In fact, he is holding it close to his body and you can see the injuries on it. I don't understand this is such a major issue when it is clear there is no problem with continuity. What happened to the lower railing on the upper level of the promenade? The boys used to hold on to it while sitting up there and now could just easily fall off. So much for safety on the filming set and in the future.

2024-07-09 16:33:46 +0000 UTCDid not know that was Miss Kitty playing the Bajoran Rep. Yaaay Miss Kitty My beef with the whole story was the fact that the Federation was out of the picture. Do we honestly think the Federation would let the Bajor starve? They were there to eventually get Bajor into the Federation. Therefore the “we don’t have enough food thing was super flimsy over all to me.

2024-07-09 12:47:09 +0000 UTCGood episode. Very insightful on the Union history. I’m horrified that Ms May suffered during filming! I worry that sometimes ‘polite’ is code for ‘afraid to cause trouble’. I feel like actors take a lot on just to get and keep a gig and while I understand the competitive nature of acting, that hurts my soul a bit. This episode is one that sticks in my head. There are a LOT of real-world parallels.

2024-07-09 07:46:23 +0000 UTCLovely show this week and always glad to hear about PanCan and the union. Congratulations to Kitty on her award. I didn't know Armin and Kitty were in Babylon 5 although I know there were many actors who appeared in both shows and directors who worked on both as well. I'll have to check who they were playing. What part did Robbie audition for, or was it a directing gig? I love both these shows and am currently rewatching B5 with my husband. Yes they made it cheap in an old warehouse, I think they did pretty well with what they had set/costume-wise and some great makeup from John Vulich's Optic Nerve company which also created the demons and vampires on Buffy.

2024-07-08 14:18:49 +0000 UTCYay! Finally got to see the podcast guest starring Kitty Swink, Professor Shimerman's wife! "Sanctuary" has very strong moral messages and themes to the story, however I agree with Robbie, Garrett, Armin and Kitty's mentioning that there were gaps, storytelling inconsistencies and missing scenes in this episode. I agree with Garrett saying that he didn't like the scene where Kira called Quark a "toad" who was close to "doing a 280 down an airlock" - I didn't like that either. There's another episode where Kira actually admits her contempt to Quark in front of him (not very pretty). If I was a fictional character on the show, I would've gotten in between Kira and Quark and tell her off ( That's how much I like the show - I practially imagine myself as a Star Trek DS9 character). Liked the behind the scenes tidbits from Kitty and Armin about Deborah May having an allergic reaction to the pumice in her makeup and yet was able to power through and did an outstanding performance. Would love to see several missing scenes, one of them definitely being Quark and Minister Rohzan interacting. Would be very interesting and fun to see my favorite husband and wife duo acting in a scene together. Hearing Kitty and Armin talk about their brothers being aerospace engineers at the beginning of the podcast made me think of my grandfather who was also a aerospace engineer who worked remotely with NASA (he was also one of the many engineers that NASA called when Apollo 13 was disabled due to the oxygen leak). My grandfather passed away when I was very young and I still think about him.
