The Delta Flyers - DS9 Invasive Procedures 204 Video

The Delta Flyers is hosted by Garrett Wang, Robert Duncan McNeill, Terry Farrell & Armin Shimerman. In each podcast release, they will recap and discuss an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

This week’s episode, Invasive Procedures, is hosted by Garrett Wang, Robert Duncan McNeill, Terry Farrell, and Armin Shimerman.

Invasive Procedures: A seemingly timid Trill arrives on the station and takes the crew hostage, demanding to be joined to the Dax symbiont.

Love seeing all 4 of you! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Dee McGee

2:13:38, "you would be a giant ferengi Robbie" lol

Lisa Minnesma

I laughed SO HARD at Robbie's reaction to the thing coming out of Jadzia Dax's stomach LOL!

Lisa Minnesma

Do they ever talk about that in any show/episode? Cuz I’ve always wondered about this, too

Becky Messer

“I like the idea of a banana peel…it’s visually a-peel-ing” 🤣 freaking Terry haha!

Becky Messer

@8:32 although this doesn’t use Terry Matalas’ first name, there was M’talas Prime mentioned in ENT & also M’talas IV mentioned in PIC, iirc. But he wasn’t yet a director during the ENT era 😝

Becky Messer

So glad they got both Armin and Terry for this episode as they were both brilliant in it.

Scott Fuller

The point was he wouldn’t have had the gumption to do this had he not found out there was a symbiont next to the wormhole.

Constance

The symbiont has no autonomy other than to survive.

Constance

The whole point was that Sisko was taking the risk that Jadzia and Dax might die. But it was worth the risk to stop the guarantee that Jadzia would die

Constance

I like that Jadzia and Kira are obviously friends and have a few girl focus moments, but they aren’t random super hero girl power buddies. They were both just good at their jobs and happen to also be girls.

Constance

It wasn’t fake. Sisko knows how symbionts work. He is speaking to his friend Dax - seeing if the morality that he knew Kurzon and Jadzia held was still in there or if it was overpowered when blended with the selfish desperation of Verod.

Constance

Symbionts do reproduce just at a different rate

Constance

I liked the emphasis on Dax. It was important to show how much of the character’s personality is Dax versus Jadzia. I think it is a short term play (one episode) that pays dividends for the whole rest of the show.

Constance

Shape shifters don’t breath air

Constance

I signed up last year and I'm finally caught up Woot!

Labrek

He does assume the pose in Move Along Home when he's begging. Not quite the same but similar.

MG

Truth. *spoiler*stop reading now if you haven't see more of the show* one flies through space without a ship or suit.

MG

I felt like Sisko took the chance and shot him at the end because the person he shot was a mix of Verad and Dax and the callousness and flippant attitude was Dax as much as it was the host. Dax was as much of a villain at that point as Verad. Shooting him was the only way to get him to stop and give Jadzia a chance so it was worth the risk and he'd rather Dax die too than let him live on with Verad while Jadzia dies. He friendship had ended.

MG

@ 1:03:35 (ref Kira getting beat) - it reminds me of, in TNG, it always felt like Worf got his butt kicked ALL THE TIME! He was pretty lame in TNG… fortunately the writers redeems his reputation when he joins DS9.

Greg Byrne

That was my thought too re Quark and security measures.

peter

Shapeshifters can morph into space living creatures and fly through the vacuum of space so I'm assuming they don't breathe. They can also be reflective surfaces so do probably was the bulkhead

Reece Allert

Yes, what is also really cool was that Armin did the entire stunt scene where he jumps on Tim Russ's back. For a long time, I thought they had a stunt double to do the jumping bit, but it looks like Professor Shimerman did the entire stunt. Awesome!

Nicole Brettell

I like Terry’s Galaxy Con hat.

Christopher Collins

I found it interesting and I forgot that this was the first time seeing what Quark looks like when praying. I would have thought it was seen earlier in the first season episode The Negas or something else.

Christopher Collins

I love when you both are on the episode. I am surprised Tim Russ was not called in or had as a special guest to speak about this episode. But I loved hearing both of their perspectives on this episode.

Christopher Collins

The extra bonus special treat to have both Armin and Terry! Thank you!

Jeffra

I think you are right that the writers thought this was a Sisko episode when it should have been a Jadzia/Dax the symbiont episode.

Christopher Collins

Well I think the fact that psychologically he was willing to sacrifice jadzia is an indication he is mentally unwell and therefore unfit for joining….not physically not a match but mentally unfit.

Sarah Zeisler

I agree that there needed to be more Jadzia and Marat(?) interaction. It would have been interesting to do some Trill world building. Is kidnapping a symbiont a capital crime on Trill? Is a cultural taboo those kinds of things.

Patrick Lussenden

Terry's shoes (in the video reactions)!! Love them.

Klee Wiggins

Was I the only one thinking it was about preventing theft of the props? I bet more than a few Star Trek extras have snuck phasers, etc. off the sets over the years.

Bynoe

Having Armin and Terry both is a real treat. This was an excellent episode of Delta Flyers!

Bynoe

Do Robbie and Garrett recognize Megan Gallagher (Mareel) from Voyager 7x7, "Body and Soul" playing Lt. Jaryn?

Karen Chiu

Agreed! I thought of Chimera also - that other changeling is flying in space! Definitely don't need to breathe.

Karen Chiu

I would watch Robbie's debut as the first Ferengi in the NFL!

Heather Irwin

Season 3 episode "Equilibrium" will explain much of Trill/Symbiant details.

Michael Brooks

Just hold those thoughts on why it didn't seem as though Verad and Dax were a bad match. You are all absolutely right, and the writers didn't miss that either!

Jeremy Sessions

It's really cool to find out that Armin created the Ferengi prayer posture! I've always wondered how DS9 got so good at incorporating religion into culture--not pro, or anti, just an aspect of life. It's very interesting to find out that some of those elements were added by the actors; I always guessed that there was one writer who was really good at and in charge of that aspect of the show, but it sounds like it may have been more of a group effort. I think the prayer posture Armin added is especially good--instantly recognizable and related to something we already know, but also different enough to be alien. Very good sci fi!

Anne

I was glad to hear her bring that to, too. The writers really missed an opportunity, not having more of that kind of Kira/Dax interaction. And, because they (probably? Maybe through the mirror universe) can't bring Terry back, there's a missed opportunity right now to have a new show featuring Dax and Kira, which would have been awesome.

Anne

It does not matter how many security guards are on the station. Quark had to turn off the security protocols in order for the bad guys to bring their weapons on the station. Otherwise the security field and alarm would have activated. Speaking of turning off the security protocols, how many crimes had Quark now committed? Several of these should have resulted in significant prison time. Just like Dr. Smith on Lost in Space, he keeps getting away with it time after time. Eventually we learn that about 50% of the Trill population is able to host a symbiont but the number of people that are approved for hosting is artificially limited through both the availability of symbionts and the extensive and elaborate trials and tests they are put through. Therefore Verad is not necessarily an "unfit" or "bad" host, he is probably within the 50% group but was not chosen. Memory Alpha says that about 500 symbionts are available every year, live up to 800 years and procreate in the underground pools. RDM says he never knew there was a stasis chamber on DS9 but there was a scene that took place in it during the S1: E9 The Passenger episode. Looks a bit different though. Verad shoots O'Brien and says that he has taken the first step. Gee, I thought taking over a Starfleet Space Station was the first step.

ST Fan CB

Gosh I love when all four of you are on.

Karen Chuplis

Having all 4 of you is great. And I love the non-Star Trek stories: the phasers, Betty, the chainsaw, etc. So fun!

Jan Hanford

This is my take. Benjamin isn’t always known for making the logical decision. Also I’m pretty certain Jadzia has been stunned with no ill affect.

Karen Chuplis

That phaser story is hilarious. Y’all we’ll find out a LOT more about the trill questions later on. Pretty much all those questions will be answered.

Karen Chuplis

Terry stated that she did not do one right after Garrett's Haiku.

Garrett

Me too. She channels my enthusiasm.

SnazzyO

Exactly!

SnazzyO

Changelings do not breathe. There is a episode much later in the series almost at the end of the run, 7x14 Chimera that explains this very clearly. Enjoyed seeing all four of you together. It's great having two actors from the show helping each other's memories of creating it.

Jeremy Meyer

I totally agree with Robbie and everyone that this episode needed more of the Jadzia side of the story - it was a huge missed opportunity for us to really get to know her and what she was like without Dax. And as I said in my comment on The Siege, I'm with Terry as well - I don't understand why we didn't get more episodes with Kira and Dax going on adventures and kicking butt together! Their banter and interactions in The Siege were wonderful!

Ria

Good intro Terry! ITA, more Terry and Avery together would have been nice too. Loved Quark’s facials with Bashir. Odo physics will NEVER compute but I think he doesn’t need air. John Glover is amazing. Love Armin’s story about replacements. It’s hard and overcoming that is difficult. It didn’t feel like a bottle show. I have to rewatch for Tim. I’m wearing the cone of shame for not noticing that he was the Klingon. ETA: Rewatch complete. I’m telling you, big Tim Russ fan and I had to strain to hear it. Only a few sentences were obviously Tim IMO. Great actor. ETA2: The joining with Verda was not mature. He will live. I can’t remember when we get this knowledge, it might have been TNG or later DS9. ETA3: My missing scene is Kira/Quark talk after it’s all over. Some squirming on his part would be good.

SnazzyO

Just an absolute joy to watch. I have stayed up until 3:38am because I couldn’t stop watching. My only criticism-never worry about the amount of time you are taking to record! I WANT to hear about your lives, your opinions, and what you think is important. If I wanted just a rundown of what happened in this episode, I’d read it on the internet. What makes this special are the four of you being so open and uninhibited and then the beautiful talents of Rebecca and Megan to put it together and add cartoon chainsaw spice when needed. ;-) To quote Pacino, “You got the stuff, Pappy. I love to see it.”

James Morrow

Armin, was right. Maybe sisko literally lost hi cool?/

Jonathan Beresford

no, shapeshifters do no breathe.

Jonathan Beresford

Wait, where is Terry’s poem?? I hope they come back to it! (I’m only 20 minutes in)

Jeffra

I had to pause the video because I was laughing so hard at the picture of Dax wielding a chainsaw

Brandon Kolk

I've really been enjoying all the extra non-trek stuff in these episodes. (Terri's dog, the theater side discussion, Les' style lol, etc.) This is the kind of stuff you don't get in interviews or even at panels.

Wrestling With Gaming

Ah yes, the episode where I made a note for a missing scene for a future episode

Brandon Kolk

Pleasantly surprised to see Armin Shimerman in the podcast alongside Terry Farrell. Terry's new puppy Betty is very cute! Fun story about Armin, Ethan Phillips and Kitty Swink starring in Hamlet as Claudius, Polonius and Gertrude respectively. Was wondering if Robert and Garrett were ever going to talk about the high-pitched Ferengi scream that made its acoustic debut in this episode. Always wanted to ask Armin and any Ferengi actor in DS9, how do they make the high-pitched scream without tearing out their vocal cords.

Nicole Brettell

Until Garrett mentioned I didn't clue in for the bun of steel now it's all i can see lol I love what he always catches in those reaction videos

Martin D

I've said this before and I'll say it again, I absolutely love Terry's reaction videos

Martin D
