No need to predict who the Tosk are like

Harmony through Time Mighty Mouse

"Cardassian and coffin both begin with C." 😂

Dee McGee

Quark’s cringeworthy alluded behavior harkens back (to a lesser extent) to the less than complimentary characteristics of Tom the first 2 seasons.

Lee Stroud

He said it once.

Emmett Macfarlane

Remember that Picard said "Shut up, Wesley" about a hundred times, which I always thought was unprofessional and out of character, not to mention mean.

Kris Hansen

Yeah they’re giving OBrien more credit than he deserves. He’s definitely using it in a derogatory manner

Mars

Yeah, it is repeated through season one and two, and definitely isn’t a “nickname.”

Jenny

Yeah, I’d thought it was fairly obvious it wasn’t a, um, positive “nickname” so it was interesting that reasonable minds may disagree on intuiting that without more context!

Jenny

Right - same with TNG giving us the context (that honestly it thought was obvious, having gotten into Voyager then DS9 *then* TNG, but apparently not obvious!) from O’Brian’s history with the Cardassians (alluded to in the second DS9 episode but spelled out more on TNG) that, uh, “Cardies” is derogatory, not a “nickname.” 😳 But I definitely thought the same re the Ferengi encounters O’Brien had previously had on the Enterprise-D, in terms of being cool towards Quark (also a stranger to him anyway at this stage, like he knows his name from the name of the establishment, but that doesn’t mean they’re on a first-name basis).

Jenny

Just a sidenote that “Cardies” isn’t a nickname - it’s derogatory. The audience at the time knew that O’Brien had personal history with the Cardiassians from TNG, and he alluded to it on the second DS9 episode asking Sisko if he’d ever fought the Cardassians (no) and giving him the perspective that you wouldn’t want to turn anyone over to them. So…it’s good that Voyager didn’t have “nicknames” for other races they encountered. 😳 And LOVE that Armin gave us some reaction even though it wasn’t “his” episode, and that Terry watched the next, “not her” episode (and maybe did the same!). Obviously they know that skipping every other or every second episode won’t be helpful for recapping a later in the series, but really nice to see (and get some of their rewatch-reactions!).

Jenny

Terry, we think you’re great! You’re so real, refreshing & radiant. Garret and Robbie, still cool AF.

Michael Frame

I am Groot!

Kris Hansen

I've always enjoyed this episode (but agree with 7/10), Colm and Scott's performance is what elevates it beyond just another cute season 1 Star Trek story into an episode that I always enjoy when rewatching! The friendship and mutual respect between Tosk and O'Brien is so enjoyable to watch - the goodbye scene gets me misty eyed every time, even though I must have seen it a dozen times over the years! Also, I loved the little tangents and stories shared - like about Terry's car, and Garrett taking her for a drive around the lot hahaha. Hearing those little glimpses into your lives and memories is so fun!

Ria

If the security field picked up O'Brien's weapon, then why was there no reaction from the security forces? O'Brien did not even press a few buttons to turn off any alarm that was generated. Pretty much useless security feature. Quark tells the blue alien lady to leave the establishment but Quark has already escorted her to the outside of it. He also says that he will return her currency but she walks off without getting it. I disagree with RDM wanting comedy. Star Trek is NOT comedy. If you want that, go watch Big Bang or Friends (showing my age). Star Trek has always had light hearted moments up to humor but if you want slap stick go elsewhere.

ST Fan CB

I just wanna say Terry Ferrell's video reactions are so cute.

Klee Wiggins

Loved that little head kick - my guess is not scripted - but it is to the credit of Colm Meaney for staying in the moment - that is how O’Brien (or anyone would react if accidentally kicked in the head when meeting someone new in a professional capacity)

Constance

O’Brien had history with Ferengi on TNG, and I think O’Brien’s attitude towards Quark is reflected in that - not overplayed, but they are setting up that O’Brien is not a peacemaker - he is a moral compass.

Constance

I saw this bit as important character development so early in the series - Quark pushed financial boundaries in other episodes, but rounding out that he will push all boundaries and wait for someone to stop him. Sisko is set up as knowing he isn’t on a Federation station, but also establishing those boundaries.

Constance

Really love how Garrett, Robbie, and Terri (and of course Armin) are picking up on a lot of the nuances other podcasts have completely missed or misread. Can’t wait for the next episode.

Constance

Odo - not a robot, his reaction time is excellent, but they shot it to show he was clearly caught off guard and he got hit - happens to the best of us. I like that they are setting up Odo isn’t some random invincible character - we don’t know anything about his species at this point.

Constance

Carnies - from TNG O’Brien’s character fought the Cardassians in the war. It is a derogatory term. It shows character consistency from TNG to DS9

Constance

Another great episode all.

Rik Moran

Not a next gen episode but Voyager had the Hirogen that hunted others as prey.

ST Fan CB

About Quark and the contract….this shows up more than once so it’s setting it up. Esp thinking of the one where Quark sees things from a female perspective…no spoilers…lol

Dawn Smith

I love Terry's Christmas tree and fuzzy hat! Very festive. :-)

Heather Irwin

I remember O’Brien calling them the Cardies multiple times throughout the season, cant remember other characters calling them that. I think it has to do with O’Brien’s previous war experience with them.

Jimmy Dombrow

I actually think Terry's perspective on the episodes is closest to how I see them at this point. She was obviously on the show, so like she talked about, she might not notice a lot of things that Robbie and Garrett do because it was just normal to her. Obviously I was not on the show, but I've seen all of these episodes, in addition to all the other Trek media, so many times that I don't even question or notice some of the things that the others point out. Some of their observations are answered later, or by existing Trek lore that they aren't otherwise aware of, but a lot of their observations are genuinely interesting to me because I would never have thought of it in that way. It's like when I watch Star Trek with my buddy who is not at all a Trekkie. I find myself explaining things that it feels like I've just always known. So it feels odd to explain them.

Jeremy Sessions

Absolutely! Terry and Armin are both doing great. It feels like they've been doing this for years. They're naturals

Wrestling With Gaming

You all absolutely killed it with the poems this week. I was super impressed with Terry's, especially considering she's new to this. I'm loving the chemistry and camaraderie between Terry/Armin with Robbie & Garrett. I say it every week, this show is my weekly dose of serotonin. I loved the side story about Sid, Marina, the Terry/Garrett car ride, the Datsun etc. This is a great season 1 episode. It tells us a lot about O'Brien and the new world of DS9. Thanks for your insights, Terry. Robbie and Garrett, you all were great as always. LLAP 🖖🏼

Wrestling With Gaming

Terry, I think Robbie is used to looking at these episodes through the eyes of a director and Garrett has picked up on those habits as well. So that's probably why you are not picking up on all of these little things, because that is not something you are used to. You are doing great, don't feel bad!

Jen V

I noticed that too! 😺

Jen V

I felt I had seen a similar episode on TNG. About someone being hunted as prey by another species

David McMullen

Oh, Terry! I loved my Datsun too. It was a 210, but i loved it as much as you did!

Miki Tracey

I wonder if there was more B story about the contract and Quark and it all gut cut besides at the start. hmmmm. It was very A story only rest of the episode.

Monte Plays Games

This was a great podcast episode. Enjoy having Terry on. This is going to be such a fun adventure. The episode needed some more Tom Paris ;)

Monte Plays Games

A few things..first Loved this episode of the Podcast and DS9. Next, O’Brien has dealt with Ferengi on Next Gen, so he knows how sneaky they can be. O’Brien also fought in the Cardassian war, so he always calls them Cardies. O’Brien has a very clear sense of right and wrong. Great episode!

Theresa Volz

Okay but Terry's car was my dream car as a kid 🥹 love it!

Rebecca Leary

I feel like the slow walking that Robbie mentioned early in the episode actually kinda works for a general audience. I never really notice the slow walking in trek, but if anything in this instance, it reinforces Sisko's confidence as a commander, showing that he does not panic in moments of crisis and makes decision with a cool calm level head.

The Real Andrew Kim

i want to hear more about this michael westmore documentary. is it about the whole westmore dynasty? who’s making it? 💄💅👽🤩

commander swinny

I have no idea what Garrett was saying during his reaction. All I could pay attention to was Bubbles totally owning that gate.

Steph Lee

This early on we often only see Crusty O’Brien. He struggles letting his softer side show. It’s why the arch of his and Bashir’s friendship is one of the greatest. Bit his underlying feeling and the manner he expresses it are often at odds.

Karen Chuplis

Re: “Cardies” O’Brien definitely referred to them as cardies as well on TNG. I think it gets less in DS9 because they were actually around. But it slips in once in a while.

Karen Chuplis

I just watched it early this morning... I had not realized that it was released last night (I thought it was going to be released Monday night instead of Sunday Night). When you guys were talking about the NASA sound recording of a Black Hole, I was compelled to listen to NASA recording on YouTube... The Black Hole sounds was very eerie and interesting at the same time, and I thought the droning sounds would make a great ambience for a Sci-Fi/Galactic-Themed Haunted House. I remember watching Captive Pursuit and loved the episode's themes and O'Brien's kindness, respect and support towards Tosk. Loved the ending where Tosk says "O'Brien, Die With Honor" - you can hear the extent of respect and admiration Tosk has for O'Brien. I thought it was interesting that "Captive Pursuit" Director, Corey Allen portrayed the villain in "Rebel Without A Cause". Great Analysis for a Great episode!

Nicole Brettell

I also noticed the docking door bounce, and wondered if anyone else would notice. Good eye Garrett.

Gilbert

Ok the car story, and all the Sid and Marina and Garrett names flying around and can I just say how fun it is to hear you all in that u universe of its own too. And also jeez Terry how freaking stressful!! First day??? OMG. You are made of steel. Not sure I could have done it.

Karen Chuplis

After a couple of episodes with now Terry and Armin, I can truly say that i'm loving it, you can tell the chemistry is there for sure. For this episode I truly loved how comfortable Terry looked watching the episode, I kept expecting her to take out a cup of hot chocolate.

Martin D

Wait. Terry LOVED Q-Less? To each their own of course and I know every episode is somebody’s favourite but I’d love to hear her reasoning as it’s never been one that connected with me at all

Craig Main

I always found this episode difficult. The message seems to be don't judge other cultures, but is that a good message? They raise Tosk and then hunt them for sport. It's ok because Tosk are honoured and they want to be hunted as it's their role. Is that really a good thing? Some parts of other cultures (and my own culture!) are wrong but does this episode say we should just accept it? I find that somewhat dangerous - should we not say something about how woman are treated in Afghanistan or LGBTQ people in Uganda? Or do we just say it's a different culture and we need to accept that?

dave roberts

O'Brian's animosity towards quark is because of his past experiences on the enterprise with Ferengi, which were invariably bad experiences. He does not know Quark personally at this point.

Jonathan Beresford

Kelly Curtis is daughter of Tony Curtis and sister of Jamie Lee Curtis! 🎉

Jeffra

Lol I was going to say the same thing. There isn't a force field that can hold that kitty back!

Wrestling With Gaming

Happy new year everyone!

Bigiorne

OMG the cat laughed in the face of that gate ...
