Tinted resin for the pumpkin?

We’re back with another round of small scale tests before we do our big resin pumpkin! This time, we’re tackling another issue we had last year with Meatball: the resin being yellow-y.

Now, when we pour resin in small amounts it’s essentially clear, but when we’re pouring an almost 1ft x 1ft x 1ft cube, any small bit of discoloration compounds. So Meatball’s resin ended up being a bit yellowed.

We’ve heard of people adding a small amount of blue to their resin to counteract this, so we thought we’d test it out. Originally we were just gonna do blue but then we thought… why not test orange tinted? Pink tinted? Glitter!? And well yeah we have a lot of tests…

When we demolded them, our favorite was actually… the light orange! If you’re looking at the top-down photo, it’s on the far right, 2 down from the top. It seemed to be the best balance of still having the pumpkin stand out, while adding a little color that felt purposeful. -K

What if, instead of salt, which shrivels the pumpkin, you tried like soaking it in rubbing alcohol for a couple weeks? That might preserve it while retaining the shape and color better...

Does resin always have issues with yellowing? I heard that it only happens after it gets old and close to expiring, but good "fresh" resin won't yellow even in large quantities. But I am certainly no resin expert!
