Hey guys! Been doing a lot of research and ordering of supplies for what we HOPE will work out as our next project: making transparent wood! We've been tagged in this article several times and it's just too cool not to try: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/quirks/scientists-develop-transparent-wood-that-is-stronger-and-lighter-than-glass-1.5902739
Basically you turn the lignin in the wood white, then infuse it with resin. Clear wood is something that has been done before by removing the lignin all together, but this method is newer and the article makes it seem like it's this easy thing anyone can do. But we had to order a LOT of specialty equipment and lab-grade chemicals to actually do it right, and there are still certain aspects of the paper that will be hard to recreate exactly. Fingers crossed it all actually works. -K
