Cutting scenes from videos

Hey guys! Thank you everyone who gave input for our BUY vs DIY - that video is gonna go live this Friday! Even though y'all have already seen our end result, I thought it'd be fun to share a little behind the scenes stuff. Specifically, how we had to cut a bunch of footage from this video because of a huge detour.

Ok so we thought for this project we'd cast my hand in alginate (what people commonly use for "life casting" because it's pretty cheap and cures quickly). Usually people will fill their alginate mold with some sort of plaster.  But we didn't realize that alginate molds start degrading (what happens is they just release a bunch of water) almost immediately after they solidify. I guess it's not a big deal with plaster, but with resin that does NOT work.

We filmed the first 3rd of this video under the impression that it would work though, and we talked a lot about how the big issue is how to slow down the curing fast enough so that we can pop it in the vacuum chamber before I stuck my hand in. Most of our tests were all geared towards figuring out how to make that happen, and we hadn't even considered that the alginate wouldn't be compatible with resin at all.

So basically we left in what still made sense for the video and had to carefully remove 90% of the talk about vacuum chambers, cure time, temperature, etc etc because it was just too far down a path that ended up not working anyway. Sometimes it hurts to just ditch a bunch of footage, but in the end it felt like cutting a bunch of it made more sense for the video.

Anyways, just thought I'd share a little peek behind the editing curtain. Hope y'all are having a great week!

Well we appreciate you sharing it with us anyway :). I’ve started working in resin for the first time and oh my gosh.... I get it now!
