Thumbnail struggles

A week or so ago, jacksfilms tweeted asking other creators how long they spent on thumbnails. It was really interesting reading the answers, ranging from 20-30 minutes to half-days to more. We're super not consistent... sometimes a thumbnail will come together in 30 minutes and sometimes it takes a full day. So many things to think about. We've been going back and forth about the thumbnail for the toast coasters so I thought I'd share a little bit about the different things we consider and also see what you guys thought about the thumbnails!

So, for the toast coasters, here are the things we're considering:

1) Does it communicate what we're doing in the video without giving away tooooo much (we want people to feel compelled to click to find out more)

2) Does it communicate that it's going to be an entertainment-focused video, not an instruction-focused video

3) Does it look like an "Evan and Katelyn" thumbnail

EDIT: Title options we're considering are:
-Can we improve this 5-Minute Craft? (Toast Coasters)
-Can we improve 5-Minute Craft Toast Coasters?
-DIY Toast Coasters
-We made Toast Coasters

Our first stab was the simplest, but it does seem to communicate some sort of test/improvement happening. Our worry was that without our faces, would it just look like a 5 minute craft video and not an E&K video? First attempt:

Second attempt added us into the mix. My worry is that it's a little similar to the BUY vs DIY thumbnail. But it does communicate more that there will be some sort of test happening:

3rd attempt is simplified, keeps us in it, and still keeps the 5 minute craft image. But it might be more confusing because unlike the other 2 options, you only see one toast, not 2, so does that make it less clear that we're doing some sort of test/comparison?

Anyways, curious to hear y'alls thoughts and I enjoyed braindumping our thumbnail struggle. Hope y'all are having a great weekend!

That's a good point! I think the layout of the second but reconfiguring the text/symbols to make it more clear. Thank you for the detailed insight! -K

For me, The 1st thumbnail makes the most sense but the 2nd thumbnail is the most appealing. I would somehow combine the two together. With the first thumbnail, it delivers the video idea clearly, I think it needs your lovely selves in it also in your "science adjacent" white coats. With the second thumbnail, I feel that the tick, cross on the two toast images and better? at the bottom is confusing, as it seems like you have already made your mind up on the test and the Better? seems out of place with the tick and cross. Maybe have question marks on the images and Which is better? at the bottom as it would give me a better understanding of the test (like the first thumbnail) and it'll also make it feel like I am on the journey with you to the discovery.

I do like the third one but was thinking you should have a more thinking and puzzled look on your faces. Rather than smiling faces. If you wanted to go with the feeling "I wonder if this would work?" vibe. // Another YT channel I follow made a great in depth video about what he found that works for him. I think you might get some info out of it that might help you at some point. This Guy Edits : https://youtu.be/cIR6zOW4mo8 // Also all of your thumbnails should have your faces.
