(Lesson Materials) Learning The Fretboard For Math Rock: What Do You Need To Know?

Some notes / resources relating to an upcoming YouTube guitar lesson on the some basic things you should work on when learning the fretboard. See attached for a list of useful PDF's.

The 3 Steps For You To Take / Follow / Learn:

1) Note Names On The Lowest Two Strings

E String Notes: E-F-F#-G-G#-A-A#-B-C-C#-D-D#-E

A String Notes: A-A#-B-C-C#-D-D#-E-F-F#-G-G#-A

2) Vertical Scales + Chords

*I've included a few documents here. 'Shell Voicings-A Master Guide', is a set of simple chords that can be played up and down the neck. I've also included another set of chords titled, 'E+A, string drop 3 + 2 voicings'. This document covers more standard guitar chord vocabulary (especially for a jazzy-indie rock sound). Finally, I've also attached my 'Math Rock And Emo Chords, Every Chord You Need' document. This will be useful if you want to go beyond basic 7th chord shapes

As for music theory, I've included a document on Diatonic Chord Theory. This one just outlines the different kinds of chords that are associated to each note in the major scale. You will want to pay particular attention to the tables on triads and seventh chords.

3) Scale Patterns

*I've included scale patterns for the key of G, and A. For G major, this will be useful as most of my lesson materials are written in G. However, A major is also useful as the patterns look slightly 'cleaner' in that key.

*BONUS: I've also included a document covering some shell voicing licks.

Cheers,

Trevor
