One of my dad's friends was hit hy a car and died when he was a kid. The way he tells it, his friend would have survived if he had a helmet, so me and my siblings were never allowed to do roller blade or bike without helmets. Wheels = wear a helmet. Point being, that particular survivorship bias didn't take hold in my house when I was growing up.

2025-05-20 18:20:07 +0000 UTCI'm white, but also trans, so I don't experience the same things, but I absolutely have middle-class white family members who are telling me to "stop listening to the news" to help me not be depressed, because a lot of them are privileged to not have to WORRY about things, so they don't properly understand that my reactions are normal reactions to stress and not me getting fucked up by doomscrolling.

How is someone like that even still a listener?
