And one such amplifying tube (a Thyratron) would be filled with another gas like argon or hydrogen for special high-voltage applications. Thus a "Hydrogen Valve" is actually a perfectly reasonable part to put into a high energy space radio, and this was a perfectly sensible movie. (lol)
