I kind of wonder if diet is one of those words that has been mutated in some way. If you think of the scientific diet then it's just a word to describe the foods you usually eat. It makes sense that the modern idea of diets don't work because you don't go on a diet you'd need to change your diet permanently. It's always come off as a sales tactic to me, make it seem like a temporary change with permanent results so people buy it.
