GAM270: The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Marsh joins us to discuss a movie that's terrifying for all the wrong reasons.

Comments

when eli spoke of the real life scooby doo. kinda weird that they wanted a show to prove that ghosts and monsters exist if based on Scooby doo, since well point of scooby doo is to show that there are no super natrual things.

Markus Nävergård

Her role on “The Expanse” gives her a lifetime coolness pass.

I’mNotSayingThat

Woot. I think. I struggle listening when I haven’t seen the movie. I come back to some of these years later when they turn up on YouTube and relive the majesty.

The Real Moorey

No where else to get it. Don’t pay them. We already paid them and we’ll explain it pretty well.

Tim, Yes that Tim - the social media guy

Re the next movie, Trump 2024....the only way to view it is to pay those cunts $12, right? Absolutely no way I’m giving them a cent. Am I missing something?

The Real Moorey

I was shown this by an amway crazy when she was furious about the book i was reading because WITCHES. Cuz imma end up like Emily Rose. I will be renting out demon cat body guards message me for details

Phoenix Hauser

JUST DON'T THINK ABOUT IT!

Marsh's "Possession is nine-tenths of the law" joke fucking killed me. I love it.

Markus D

Oh fuck...half way through the movie, and I find myself rooting for possession....because Laura Linney. Foul temptress!

I just want to complain about a trope I've seen so many times it's not even funny and that is referring to "the demon" Legion. Eli addresses it but it still annoys me to death that writers don't know a legion is a military unit composed of thousands of soldiers and not a fucking name.

I had a similar reaction as the guys did to this, when I tried to watch Season of the Witch (that awful Nick Cage thing). I had just read Sagan's Demon-Haunted World where he goes into great detail of the witch trials, people murdered for being different, for their property/ money, petty grudges etc. So the very premise that witches were real and should've been hunted hit me hard, I felt sick and didn't watch past the first few minutes. I know we're further removed from the witch trials but I still twitch at movies that are set at that point in history and portray them as real and dangerous rather than victims.

I am so glad you guys reviewed this movie. Truly. I was shown this movie by my Catholic youth group and told it was a true story and it made me terrified of going to college and getting my mental illness diagnosed when I was thirteen because they directly connect those to the demonic that I was taught to believe in.

Micki Olivieri

Torturing a child will inspire more people to join one of the largest religions on the planet? Like couldn't the divine creator of the universe just cause more Catholics to be born?

Denise Huston

"mentally unwell people never know it" is very catch 22

This being a Scott Derrickson joint makes so much sense. This is the same guy -- a devout Catholic, apparently -- who took an amoral, pleasure-seeking demon from another dimension (Pinhead) and turned him into God's avenging angel in Hellraiser: Inferno. In retrospect, that deserved to be the first direct-to-video Hellraiser movie.

Paul Freelend

was anyone else convinced LAM had covered this at some point? I checked OA's archives and apparently they haven't

General Contact Unit Problem Child

Oh dear. Laura Linney has long been my celebrity crush. I hope we both survive this. I’m 15 minutes in, and a little worried.

The Real Moorey

I took my now-spouse to this as a date. The most memorable thing about it was it introduced me to Shoreh Aghdashloo.

For anyone who is interested in the relationship between claims of demonic possession and mental illness I recommend checking into anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis. It’s a rare form of encephalitis that causes many of the “classic” symptoms of supposed possession. There is even some speculation that the girl in the real life case this movie is based on could have suffered from this. It’s fascinating and terrifying.

Angela Adcock

I was around 12 when this came out. I remember being at a friend's house and we were all too scared to watch it on dvd. Completely forgot it existed and glad I didn't miss out on much 14/15 years ago!
