Yes, Lower Decks is animated, but it is part of the "prime" Star Trek canon. You just have to pretend the characters are live action like they are in the normal Star Trek series. The series takes place after Star Trek Nemesis when Riker is Captain of the Titan. He has appeared in some of the episodes (voiced by Jonathan Frakes as well) and there have been other guest appearances from TNG and DS9 characters all voiced by the actors who played them in those series. I'm not a fan of animated series either. Interestingly enough the actors who play Boimler and Mariner in this episode are also the voice actors for the Lower Decks series.
