Earlier on in this season you wondered if this series would change anything from the original series timeline and I refrained from commenting then because I knew this episode was coming and it really answers that question. This is the "prime" Star Trek timeline. They are following it exactly. Even with the Gorn they expanded on what we saw in "Arena" with the humanoid Gorn and now by showing that the Gorn develop inside a host body and the DNA of the host species affects that development. You are right in saying Discovery did not follow that when it began and changed a lot of things, particularly the Klingons. But I think when Captain Pike was introduced in season two (which sets this show up) it was an attempt to course correct for that series by incorporating things that we knew about him from "The Cage" and "The Menagerie" two-parter.

It’s it’s own story and the Pike situation is what was outlined here he saw the future he was told the future cannot be changed.
