The Walking Dead S07E01 FIRST WATCH/COMMENTARY

Comments

Here in Feb 2025, but I watched this episode with my sister when it aired, live. I can *still* remember the pit that opened up in my tummy. I remember the reaction online. I remember watching Talking Dead and just sobbing as Steven was saying his goodbyes. I was a comic reader who assumed, after Denise, that Abraham was going to take comic Glenn's place, so I was prepared for that happening, but not the brutality of it. Glenn knocked me out. There is something for future film makers to study about this episode. I've now seen it probably 6-7 times and it still makes me wince/jump/feel sick. There is something so incredibly real about it. I don't know if it's the sound, the POV (us as viewers being on our metaphorical knees right along with our group), the acting, directing, or just an incredible combination of all, but this scene puts me "in" like no other. As for Negan, I love to hate him. Most of that is his character, but some of that, especially the love is because of JDM. He's John Winchester first and foremost to me, and I love the attitude and crass humor he brings to the character. Overall, this is an episode that during rewatches, I skip past the brutal parts but I think it's an incredible piece of film-making and everyone involved deserves their flowers.

I know I say this every time I watch a reactor react to it, but I keep forgetting how brutal this episode was. I'm sure I blocked it out. It's very traumatic. I stopped watching for a few years after this episode. But I came back to it, slowly. The episode seems drawn out. But it was needed to show the villain they're dealing with. But also to break Rick. It wouldn't be believable if Rick just agreed too easily.

This one almost made me quit it too. It was so horrible to watch! I heard on an interview with Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan) after this episode aired that has was nearly attacked on the street several times and called every name in the book by any fans of the show that saw him. He yelled "You realize this is a fictional show right?!" I could definitely see that happening and hated him sooo much myself. But.......I couldn't help myself to not watch the next one.
