If memory serves me right, the cut corners was initially a stylistic choice made for the mini-series. When it was time to create the actual series, they realized they would have to cut corners off of a heck of a lot of paper, for consistency. Personally I like the cut corners. Kinda makes the paper a bit more interesting, even if it has absolutely no practical value.
