Embracer Group have acquired Gearbox, port studio Aspyr Media and mobile publisher Easybrain for a maximum of $1.3b, $450m and $865m respectively. They also noted that Aspyr are working on a $70m AAA licensed project - rumoured to be Star Wars KOTOR remakes.
- Always nice to see rumours of new games come to fruition, although this rampant acquisition feels like it's getting out of control. On the Gearbox side, Randy's still in charge, so nothing will be too different there.
A New Battlefield Coming This Year
In EA's earnings release, they revealed that a Battlefield game is ahead of internal milestones, will be revealed in Spring and is intended for release in Holiday 2021.
- The game will be for next-gen and is on an unprecedented scale, as far as maps and player counts are concerned. As to whether it'll be a good entry in the recently troubled series, we'll have to wait and see.
GoldenEye Remaster Leaked
The cancelled GoldenEye Xbox 360 remaster that was recently shown off has leaked online, and is fully playable on emulators, if you know where to find it. The near-final ROM includes the full single-player campaign and multiplayer.
- This might be a fun weekend adventure, replaying a prettier and much smoother version of the game. Once lockdown measures are over, some split-screen multiplayer fun could be one hell of a celebration!
Sony's Best Year Yet
Sony's gaming and entertainment division is heading towards their best year ever, thanks to PS5 hardware sales and revenue from PSN and digital game sales.
- This is the first console launch that hasn't come with same-year losses. In fact, a console launch coming with their highest revenue and profit yet proves that Sony are doing something EXTREMELY right.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition Due May 14th
BioWare have announced the Mass Effect Legendary Edition is coming out May 14th, with substantial visual changes across the franchise. Mass Effect 1 is also getting notable changes to gameplay, mostly across vehicle controls and combat balancing.
- It's good to see a caring but gentle touch applied to a remaster. Hopefully, it deserves the title 'Legendary Edition'.
