Photogrammetry pt. 1

Hey guys!

Here's the first part of my photogrammetry series. In this video I'm walking you through the evolution and process of how I do my scans, but mind you the process will change a bit in the coming videos.

I'm trying explain every important bit but in the same time keep it short and cut the bullshit.

I also realized that I actually forgot to explain the cross polarization film. Basically it's just a "linear polarisation sheet" I bought in a standard A4 format. I did laser cut it to get it perfectly circular but cutting it with a scalpel or scissors works just fine too!

Let me know if you have any questions. Next video will be about the actual scanning process and workflow in Agisoft Metashape.

Maybe this is answered in latter parts of the video series but you mention you don't use the lightbox anymore - what set up do you use now?

Nice tip for anyone who wants to build a setup like this. I just finished mine and instead of ordering a polarized sheet of 30 euro's I took apart an old LCD screen and peeled it off of there. Works just as you would expect! Saves you some money :)

Hi Johannes, I love your work, thanks so much for doing this series! I'd love to know if you are still using the tent or what you have been using instead? I can't seem to find it in the other videos. Thanks! Fiona

Found the file on your facebook account....:-) Let's print it....

Hello Johannes, great video. Thank you. First step is done. I bought me the godox ringflash :-) You said you´d share the file for the filterholder somewhere? I can't find it. Please let me know, where the file is. Many greetings from Germany.

thanks for sharing your workflow!!! thats amazing! can't wait to see the next one

Please, please is there a way to view these videos with a playback speed option? For example, could you post the video to a private server, cloud storage, etc. for download? I was very dubious about how useful / interesting the photogrammetry videos for this channel would be, but the total scope and clarity of pt.1 was fantastic - really great work man +1

Amazing job as always, super clear. I was using exactly the same setup except for the polarization filter, circular one on the lens, fixed on the led ring light. And my turntable is foldio 360, I found it really useful thanks to the app and the infrared remote trigger. Can’t see the time to see next videos

Thank you :-) Actually I haven't. Mainly because I haven't had any use for scanning a full interior, however it would be very interesting to try. Scanning with a drone is however something I've wanted to try for a long time but I broke my DJI Mavic and haven't replaced it since. Hopefully I'll be able to invest in a new drone soon and give it a shot :-)

Thank you, I'm so happy to read that :-)

Hi, A bunch of new models coming up later today and archviz videos is coming soon. I was going to get back to the "copycat" project, but I felt it was about time to make a new full, complete course like the scaninavian interior, but better. After some discussions with Martin (Texture Supply) we've decided to go on a joint venture with a new project, way more in depth than my previous "scandinavian" course. In other words, he will be taking part in and not only will it cover 3D, high detail modeling, marevlous designer for curtains and beds, HDRI photography for lighting, growfx for plants, shading, but it'll also cover his aspect of a project meaning high fidelty texture creation. Also everything in this scene will be custom made, so the full scene will be made available once done. We're planning it right now and will be making an announcement soon.

the best part is that we should go for quality, thank you Johannes, such amazing to see how you work, even if for me personally as an architect I cannot go on too much-applying everything I see from you but trust me you have affected a lot on my working mentality.

When can we expect new models or walkthrough videos for archviz / interior rendering?

This is amazing. thank you

This is amazing content, keep it up Johannes!!

Nice. Thanks for sharing. You said you´d share the file for the filterholder somewhere? One more thing: If you dont use the highest aperture youll get 1.) more light in again and 2.) also sharper images, as the highest arpeture normally loses image quality again. So youll have to find the sharpest aperture of your lens, known as the sweet spot.

So much useful information. As you said in most tutorials online you can't find much about shooting process (which I guess was the main factor why my scans always look like sh...). I'm also waiting for your tips on the photogrammetry software. Also: have you tried scanning anything bigger such as a whole interior or scans from drone photography? I'm studying architecture and I always wanted to use a scan as a base for the actual modeling in max (I've done that and it was usefull to some extend but it really lucked the quality). Btw. As your new subscriber I just wanted to say thank you. Your content really helps me change my workflow in Fstorm and focus on the parts that really matter.

Sorry I should've mentioned that but I will come to that in next video where I do the actual shooting. I don't stick to a specific focal length, but since I've been shooting with a tripod the tripod legs limit how close I can get to the subject and then it's really good to be able to zoom in and out to frame the object optimally.

Just out of curiosity, because it wasn't visible in the video: what focal length were you using, Johannes?

Thanks for sharing ^^

Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
