JoJo's thoughts on freelancing Pt. 1

Sorry for the wait guys. I figured I could do a few of these videos now when I have limited access to a computer. This video itself isn't very informative but I thought I could cover a few of these topics, like my thoughts on client relations, marketing yourself etc. Not the answers to anything really, just my views of what I think works.

I will also hopefully get better at doing this type of videos as this is not something I usually do :-)

JoJo's thoughts on freelancing Pt. 1

Comments

I live in Italy. I render images for bath catalogues. They pay me 280 euros for an image...max 2-3 days for one image. Other views of the same bath 110 euros. For other images (like sofa catalogues) the price is max 700 euros. These prices are ridiculous because Italy is much more expensive than India or Russia

That's as useful as a hard core archviz tut !Yes more of those personal view behind the scene :) Thank you !

Nikola

A room but that's not entirely true as, if we're doing multiple rooms of one interior, things goes a lot faster as we build the whole apartment in one sweep. But, we still try to keep that 1,5 week plan per room/image, because that also gives us som margin to either be prepaired for unexpected changes or getting som time off between projects :P

Well no one forces them to charge those prices.. In many cases those prices are probably totally reasonable considering the economy of the country they live in. But not in all, and one reason for low prices are all insecure freelancers that are throwing themselves into the market and having no experience of either freelancing or doing work for clients, they think their only way to make it is to be cheaper than anyone else. So wrong...

Yeah. Sounds like the type of clients that you just want to say "fuck off" to. The worst thing I know is when the client doesn't respect our art, or our value and time. We have this plan of having some kind of "quick education"-system for our clients where we would educate every new client of what we do, what we DONT do, and why things cost what they do. We're yet to figure out a good model for this though, that would actually work in practice. But this is also a fun part of running a business, to figure out all of those things that you'd normally not think about when just grinding in 3D.

Thank you for sharing this. Your images would without a doubt be worth way more than 700 bucks in Sweden. Making two images a week and have a full schedule sounds like a nightmare. How's the possibilites to work with foreign clients?

Hi Johannes, what do you mean when you say 1.5-2 weeks for an interior? An apartment or a room? Bye

Yes im agree with Joad Hughes, Argentina sells renders for 200 Usd, India the same price... Canadian people don't want to pay more than 800 Usd per image, Rusía 350 Usd (Amazing quality 3dartist) don't know what is going on in the world.

Good advice. I think one of the issues with freelancing especially is that a lot of clients want the cheapest work possible and don’t understand that’s we have high expenses even if everything is just done on a computer and not in real life. Also an issue I have faced in my first year of doing this freelance is that the client compares your prices with a freelancer from Asia and expects you to cut your prices to way below minimum wage to match. Even though it’s frustrating and can be a lot of work to be a freelancer, I know it’s what I want to do. I don’t like the idea of having a boss, being just one of dozens of artists in an office.

thanks Johannes that was quite interesting. I have been struggling to figure out how to charge my clients other than per image as I find they often are inclined to go for wider shots where they have more in view in order to get more perceived value for money. Here in South Africa $700 is the going rate for a main image, exteriors may be a bit more. This essentially means I have to do 2 images a week to make financial sense IF you can find continuous work that is. Just to put that in perspective, this is my work http://www.droom.studio
