Your Japanese Animes: Mononoke

It's anime time baby. Got another Sushi Swine Request sliding down the slop chute. This time it's a weird one. I've seen this show described as a hidden gem or a cult classic. I don't know how big of a fanbase it really has but i know it came out in 2008 and in all that time i've never heard of it, so that checks out.

It may be hidden but is it really a gem? It may be cult but is it claaaassiiicc? There's only one dude who can figure that out for sure and that dude is my dude, me. It's time for opinions and i probably have some for ya. But are you a bad enough to handle them?

You know i watched this whole series and i'm still not sure i know what a mononoke is. It seems to be something different in every episode and the stuff they do is so trippy and confusing i'm not even sure what the hell i watched. Are they demons? Ghosts? Ghouls? Goblins? Graboids? Gruntildas? Guppies? Goobers? Goobadoops? Or some other kind of grungy, grimy, grody, goofy goobers?

I don't think anyone really knows, not even the guy in the show. He just shows up, pretends to know whats going on, and pulls a random explanation out of his butt before pulling out his useless tools and doing a juju dance to cast out the evil spirits. He's basically The Warrens, which means.... i've been tricked into watching another secret Conjuring movie! AAAHH!

This anime was a Conjuring all along! More like James Wananoke! How could you do this? Too scary. You've scared me. I'm scared. I die of fright now and it's your fault.

We need less medicine seller and more potion seller.

I can totally understand a disconnect from the Medicine Seller. Mononoke is a psuedo-sequal to a show called Ayakashi, in which the the medicine seller makes his debut. In the Ayakashi - bakeneco arc he's actually more human. The he has a conversation with that one girl where he seems to be telling her he has 'naughty' things for sale, as he waits for the spooky shit to start. It's a fun little humanizing mischievous character element. He also has a part where he has to desperately fight back the monster, causing him to bleed, that makes his whole exorcists schtick feel more grounded and badass. HOWEVER, then they gave him his own show and Upped the Mystery, and Downed the Humanity. I personally love him, but its in that context where I interpret him as being a little more mischievous and disdainful of the people around him. He always tells the victims, "tell me the truth and this goes away," and they all drag it out to hide their shame. He just kinda let's them die, He can't do anything, but I get the sense that he's watched this happen so much that he just can't care anymore, but he does seem happy what people make it through. Mononoke is the same story framing as Doctor Who, smart guy goes from morality play to morality play. But in DW the Doctor and the companions are all competing for attention along side stupid sci-fi bullshit that doesn't fully relate to the pathos of the episode. Mononoke is like the polar opposite. God, if only the Medicine Seller had a sidekick to ground the show and bring out little bit of his personality.
