Animation Showcase: Hackweek and More Baby Interactions!

I’m back from my holidays and this week, Lina and I would like to show you what we have been up to during this year’s Hackweek, as well as new baby animations! To showcase these, I made a short video that you can watch at the top of this Patreon Post. ⬆🎥 Everything shown today is still a work in progress and might change and evolve in time. ✨

👶 More Baby Animations, our goal and challenges
While I was away on vacation for most of July, Lina and I still managed to create a good amount of baby animations. Like always, we brainstormed first and then made a list of all the baby animations that we would need for the game, from the highest to the lowest priority. For now we’re focusing on the essential animations (holding, feeding, playing, changing the baby…). Once all of these are done and approved, Lina and I will move on to the next required animations for the game, and so on. Of course we’d love to add more cute animations and variations (and we have many many ideas), but we need to create all the basics for everything first if we want to be ready for EA next year! ⭐
On the technical side, this time Jérémie had to create a feature that lets us anchor a Parafolk to another one. We already had something similar working for objects, allowing characters to hold things in their hands, but not for holding another Parafolk!
You might have noticed that we left space between the Adult Parafolk’s hands and the Baby. It is not a mistake, it is to prevent meshes interpenetrations when the babies wear clothing. As you can imagine, creating alternative animations depending on each piece of clothing would take too much time. (You will also probably ask haha, so yes, Sasha is indeed playing with a wooden spoon. 😂 I promise this will be updated in the near future. 🥄💨)
🤸♀️ 2024 Animators’ Hackweek
The Hackweek is our annual week-long event where everyone can work on anything they want (as long as it is Paralives related haha), even if it’s not a priority. I am always very excited about it, and this year was no exception! We thought it would be nice to add little animations that could help give more life to our Parafolks. I believe these will greatly contribute to the game’s charm and liveliness and I can’t wait to add more of them before Early Access! Here are the animations we did:
Lina created a cute “Look at Nails” animation. It could be used in the Paramaker, or in the Live Mode if your Parafolks have nails equipped!
She also made a “Back Pain” reaction animation. This one could be useful for older Parafolks, or ones that have just woken up or are sore after too much exercise!
On my side, I made a “Step on Something” animation. I was thinking of using it randomly sometimes when your Para is walking on the sidewalk haha. Having dog poop on the streets could be fun (or not). It could also be used if there is something else spilled on the floor, like food, dirty puddles of water, vomit…
And finally, I also made a Whistle animation, but I can’t show it to you yet, as it is related to Andrei’s Hackweek work too! 👀
🔜 What’s Next?
Once we believe we have enough content regarding babies for the Early Access release, Lina and I will start working on the Toddler animations! Because they are older, we will need a bit more animations for them as they will be able to interact more with their environment and other Parafolks.🎈Later on, we will add sounds and special effects to compliment animations, like, for example, a censored blurred effect for when the baby is being changed!

In the sims4 it's like that too and it always bothered me 😅 because it's really tiring to feed a baby while standing, and you wouldn't think so but a baby quickly becomes heavy when you stand with him for a long time 😆 so I suggest: would it be good if the Paras could sit automatically to feed the baby (they sit in the closest place: bed, chair, sofa, pouf, stool... anything that is close to them). Or.. that they must sit on specific seats like an armchair or sofa, I don't know 🤷🏽♀️ And then, there would have to be an interaction if the player has not put something to sit on in the room but he has to feed the baby 🤔 you see ? I suggest and then you see 😙 Good Job 💜 Take your time 💪🏽

Things I've noticed that you could improve on; The babies having a full set of teeth is a little uncanny and not very realistic. Skin tone is a little too pink, outlines are a little too bold. Other than that, they look great! You're probably aware of all these pointers, plus I'm aware that this is just an early prototype for the babies and not the finished product.

And I would love to see babies learning to sit up on all 4s and rock back and forth, roll over on their tummies, and in general have some tummy time interactions with teens and older paras. I would also love to have some interactions where toddlers could play with them. Maybe play peek a boo or something cute like that.

2024-08-30 06:19:49 +0000 UTCthe animations are all so good I've been stalking this patron even before paying for early access I would check by looking at the little previews I was already excited for the baby animation but then you just HAD to drop the teaser today on youtube for the baby and pregnancy animation I immediately ran over here lol I'm genuinely so proud of your guys progress :D The bottle feeding is probably my favorite purely because of the baby reaching out for more milk I audible aww 🥺

We don't want to blurr this animation, but we'll see later on what we could do to have something a bit more realistic. Maybe a specific top would equip just for this interaction? That could maybe be the most efficient way to do so!

2024-08-26 13:02:06 +0000 UTCI love these animations so far! My question is, it seems with the breast feeding that nothing seems to happen to her tank top? Is there an idea of blurring this? For obvious reasons(although it’s natural I understand why) I’m sure there will be someone who creates a mod with no blur but some animation of using a nursing bra, or something? It just looked interesting with mostly her hand just covering the baby but you could still see her tank top as normal. Not sure how hard that is. Just thought about it when I saw it. I am not against nursing babies at all. That’s why I’m asking if it can be more realistic in that aspect. I understand with EA guidelines and such it can’t just be breast out lol until a mod comes around for adults. At this moment with the “breastfeeding” it just looked like they were cuddling them close to them and not actually feeding them. I don’t recall how Sims does it cuz I use mods and don’t play with the babies a lot anyways. Just my ideas

Also, the baby playing with the wooden spoon is so cute..it reminds me of when my sister's children and my son were babies. :) I love all the incidental animations too like the nail checking and checking shoes for poops haha will that animation also be used when people have bare feet or socks on?

I agree that things like backpain and checking on nails or a shoe sole add this extra touch of immersion. For the baby animations I'd like to see is handing the baby from one Para to another, blowing raspberry, peekaboo and a chance for a baby to throw up while burping or playing plane, which could automatically decrease the hygiene level of the holder. I also imagine you have quite a few funny bugs from experimenting with the anchoring of other Paras

I think I decided it's not so much for a baby and more for an infant, but maybe both so I'm just gonna let my idea float in the cyber space. There are other ways of carrying a baby/infant (babies are like a delicate sack of potatoes so this is why I think it might apply better for infants) so it would be cute if the way the paras are carrying them is randomised, when they're not doing an action with the baby/infant.

I would love to see the paras do 'this little piggy' with the baby's toes. Baby feet are the sweetest little thing and I'd love to see that. How about little nursery rhymes that involve hand gestures... incy wincy spider, twinkle twinkle little star, I'm a little teapot, etc. I think that would be great to see too.

So you always can change the baby wherever you are. And there are washable types of these pads and one-way products. For poor Paras or environmentally conscious Paras, that could be also a thing.

The "put it out, put it back in" or "just put everything out of every drawer" is a fun game for a looong time. And pots and boxes or a whisk can be so interesting. Something like that would be cool for the Paras too. And child safety locks, so that the adult Paras don't have to worry too much. 😂

Changing a baby directly on a surface doesn't seem hygienic, so I think people tend to put some cloth down first, and that could serve as a cheap alternative to an actual changing station. Poor people in tiny apartments have babies too!

Might be easier to program, maybe with a "do not do this animation" check for bald/shaven hairstyles.

2024-08-23 16:10:01 +0000 UTCBabies are rather uncoordinated, so it could be fun if they have a small chance to hit themselves in the face with the toy, causing a surprised look and slight pause in playing, before they continue. It doesn't have to be a big thing, not hitting your own face when moving your arms is a thing we all learn as we grow up.

My little brother was only interested in various kitchen utensils for a good couple months as a toddler and my nieces have had similar phases. I love seeing the progress team!!

For interacting with the baby maybe show them cards with objects, figures or even family members. Strollers, a diaper table (I don’t know how is it called lol) I’d love if with babies we would get to have the bottles to fill ourselves and get the baby formula so dad can make him food and not just take a bottle out of his magic pockets. Being able to give the baby a bath on a tiny bathtub for babies 😭😭😭😭 that would be so cute

Will they gain skills or interactions the more parafolk take care of them? Some interactions or baby skills: rock baby to sleep in arms or rocking chair and then transfer a sleeping baby to crib learning to coo, wave, baby blow raspberries. learning to crawl (not sure if you plan on having toddlers learn to crawl and then walk or be walking from the beginning) learn to roll over learning to sit up, sitting up with legs in front feeding baby in high chair, learning to eat baby food and beginning solid food with feeding themselves strollers, being able to take toddlers and babies on a walk together and wearing baby

I agree that the interactions between the adults and baby look really loving. So impressive. I was wondering if maybe the babies could grab someone's spectacles or necklace whilst they're wearing them.

I would love the animation to be implemented in other places too though. Maybe the bed and the floor since I know when my nephew was a baby I used to change him in those places since we didn't have a dedicated changing table in my parents' house.

Every time I watch animations from this team it's like I can see and feel the love and attention to detail that has been put in. Love how wriggly baby is! Absolutely perfect. I do think when the Para puts baby back in the crib it would be really nice to see them lay a hand on baby's chest for a moment or stroke their cheek or head! - when my babies were little I would hold their little arms still for a couple of moments while they settled and keep a hand on the chest for a while before breaking contact. The feeding and burping and rocking animations are awesome! - I would definitely prioritise having a "sitting" version of all of those though, as no mama is breastfeeding standing up by choice 😅😅 while chasing a 2 year old trying to feed a baby, sure - otherwise sitting would seem a lot more natural 😅 The babies are SO stinking cute though. So much love 🥰 Baby interactions I would love to see: singing heads shoulders knees and toes, babbling together, blowing raspberries on belly and chest, and swaddling for sleep 🥰

It's great to see all these animations ; the adults are careful to support Sasha's head, it's a great touch. It's also adorable to see the baby reaching for the bottle during the feeding animation. I was a bit surprised to see that the changing animation happens in the crib, but I suppose that once this one works, it can be adapted to other surfaces like a changing station ? Two animations I'd really like to see is a baby fussing while in the crib (or on the floor), and also a baby interacting with a plushie like the teddy bear we see here. Maybe just grabbing its nose, or reaching for a paw, something simple ; but I imagine that a fluffy and/or colorful plushie would be very appealing to a baby whose perception of the world is limited to a crib or immediate surroundings. The Hackweek animation for back pains also reminded me of how much I'd love it if Parafolks had a "physical particularity" that would include back pains (they'd rub their back and get tired a bit more frequently), bad vision (they'd frown a lot if they didn't wear glasses and would get tired from activities such as reading and computers), itchy (they'd scratch themselves frequently and would be uncomfortable in some clothes), vain (they'd often look at their nails, regularly, and they get a mood boost from looking at themselves in a mirror), and such things. It'd allow Paras to be more unique, would provide slight bonuses/minuses, and would make many of the animations you and Lina have been working on functional. What do you think ?

Baby throws tantrum and nothing works so rocking the baby for a long while in the arms is the only way to stop/ or have to drive them in the car or take them in the stroller for a walk or putting on favourite music(doesn’t have to be baby music. Could be like rock or RnB) Chucking them on the air and catching them to make them laugh. Baby neglect would mean child being taken away. Breast feeding is difficult to some parents. Like a random play through. Second baby is easier maybe. It would probably be annoying to some players but gamifying looking after the baby I think would be fun and realistic. Enough quality time spent with baby means raising them to be better independent adults. Idk maybe this to far to much haha. Thank you for all your hard work!
