A Deep Dive into our Development Planning

Hi there, I hope you had a nice week.

Alex here today to share two very very exciting news:

  1. 📢 We are sharing a big project roadmap, giving you an exclusive look at our internal planning of every major feature to include in the game before its release.
  2. 📢 You will notice on the roadmap that Paralives will first launch in Early Access. We do not have a release date estimate to share yet but we can now confirm that the game will first release in Early Access.

The Paralives Development Roadmap

The roadmap lists all features that we have developed so far and the features that are yet to come. Some elements can be opened for more details.


The roadmap is divided into modules like the Paramaker, Build Mode, Live Mode and features are grouped by state: Done, In Progress, Before the Early Access Release, During the Early Access and Under Consideration (After the Full Release).


🗺️ Why this Roadmap?

As you know, we already have a development page on our website and frequent Patreon posts with development updates. However, we wanted people to get a closer look at the development planning for Paralives and to better understand all the work needed to make a life simulation game. Doing so, we aim to be as transparent as possible and allow people to know what they can expect from us.

📌 Where We’re At

Here’s a summary of the current state of each part of the game, as you can see in more details on the roadmap shared at the beginning of this post.


🛠️ Will the Roadmap Change?

The roadmap is not set in stone and because of the challenges of game development, some features will get changed, delayed to after the initial release or maybe even canceled. During development, some design or technical problems can come up, having a direct effect on our planning. Our goal is to be as transparent as possible with you so we will keep you updated about challenges we meet and eventual changes to our plan. Also, as we get closer to the release, new tweaks and polish will get added to the roadmap following playtests on the game. In short, the roadmap is something that will evolve over time.


📢 Paralives Will First Release in Early Access

Releasing a game on Steam in Early Access is a way for developers to launch their product while it is still being actively developed. During Early Access, anyone who is eager to play a game can try it, understanding that it might not be complete and then give feedback to the developers so they can polish it and complete it before the 1.0 launch of the game.

As you can see on our roadmap, we can now confirm that we will first launch the game in Early Access, when it’s ready! Doing so will allow us to put the game in your hands sooner, when we feel that it offers an enjoyable experience, even though it will still lack some promised and important features. Then, during the Early Access period, we will frequently update the game to add all the content and features needed to complete our vision.

When Paralives will come out in Early Access, it will be purchasable and playable by everyone, not just Patrons. We are still considering the idea of a closed beta phase for Patrons only before launching in Early Access but it is not planned for now. The exact price of the game has not been established yet but it will be around the same as other games in the same genre.


🚀 When Will Paralives Launch in Early Access?

The roadmap doesn’t display any time estimates for each feature to be delivered and for the game to come out in Early Access on Steam. Making a huge and complex game like Paralives is a colossal, long and sustained effort. In consequence, it’s very hard for game developers to exactly predict when a game will be ready. We have internal planning documents with more details and time estimates for each task so we do have a release window in mind. However, we prefer to keep it secret until we get closer to the release to avoid having to disappoint people by delaying a previously announced release date.

I hope you liked this look at our internal planning. This roadmap will be made public next week and everyone will be able to look back at it from time to time to check on our progress. We have gone such a long way since the project started and we still have a good way to go but I feel really excited about what Paralives is shaping up to be. I'd hope they'd get the foundations of systems like selling/buy from retail stores or attending/teaching at schools implemented in the base game and DLC might be reserved for more niche experiences like vampires or aliens. I hope they feature most of what you'd experience living in a small town in this game: Corner stores, GP clinic, local sheriff, homestead farms, craftsman workshops, small apt rentals, local public school, used car lot, bicycle store. I think if they keep their world scope to a small town rather than a small city, they'd be able to deliver a functional civic ecosystem by the conclusion of early access.

Oh please have DLC's, they're not a bad thing at all. They actually can be used to let players pick and choose what new features they want. For instance "occults" or Supernatural creatures. Like witches/wizards, werewolves, vampires, etc. Not everyone enjoys that kind of gameplay, so they'd definitely be good to have. Plus since I already get excited about new things Paralives does, I'd love to see trailers for such and such content, hehe. I absolutely love y'all.

i cannot wait for early access! one thing i hope we get as an update or a mod in the steam workshop would be multiplayer. that would be so fun 😩 i know most people don’t like multiplayer in life simulation games, because they think having multiple gods controlling a family is too much. however, i don’t see it that way, i see it as us playing as different people in one household. i’ve been waiting for a multiplayer life sim since the sims 2 console days 🥺 and all the other multiplayer sims games on the console like the sims 1, bustin out, and urbz. thank you for doing god’s work btw paralives team! i’ve been supporting you guys and watching your development process and growth both in the game and in the team since july of 2019. i hope you guys slay the house down boots in the life simulation genre and give E* a run for her money.

Our goal is to launch the game in early access but not as early as possible. We want the game to be a complete and enjoyable experience on day 1 of early access. The early access phase will be used to make small improvements and add non essential features that are typically found in updates and in expansion packs like for instance pets, more skills, more furniture, more clothes, etc. For us, Early Access doesn't mean that the game will come out as a super early work-in-progress product. It means that the game will already be complete and enjoyable but not with all the extra and nice-to-have features yet. Hope that helps :)

We would like to add elements in the game that allow disabled players to represent themselves, but we can’t confirm which ones and how yet since there are a lot of different disabilities and ways to represent them. That's why they are not on the roadmap at the moment, because we are still researching and considering everything.

Our goal is definitely to have a solid and enjoyable gameplay loop on day 1 of the early access and improve it during early access. We definitely want to launch in early access in a state that most of the people could already have fun with and no sooner than that

It's true that we had started to work on weather effects but they still need a lot of work so that's why there's nothing about them in the Done section. We will resume the work on that later on, during the Early Access :)

Horses are not part of the core gameplay, true. That's why we will work on them after the initial Early Access launch :)

Yes, there will be other various settings in the settings menu like shadow quality, screen resolution and so on that will help the game run on lower end systems

On one hand I think an Early Access would be nice since it would be a ''win-win'' situation. The developer team would get the needed money to develop the game even further during Early Access and the people could play the game. But there's always one possible disadvantage to this: there are some people who won't read everything thoroughly and they will think that the game is finished, and that it basically has everything they expect from a life sim game. Which might leave to bad reviews (despite it being their fault for not reading everything thoroughly) This also could potentially lead to stress for you guys since the game isn't finished of course and hasn't reached their full potential yet with all of their features. However this doesn't mean that this will happen nor that everyone is like this. I would suggest what @Estelle said and maybe release a Demo instead?

Love the transparency! Although, I would recommend you to not have Early Access. It seems like I'm the only person in this comment section with this opinion. I'm very excited about the game but I want to provide feedback that hopefully is useful. Early Access is destroying the gaming industry. I want to pay for a game that is fully done and not half-done. I don't want people to play Early Access and get disappointed or for the review of the game to become negative because you stressed out the game for Early Access, like so many other games. Too many games have fallen into the Early Access pit and stumbled upon making a success because of the stress from fans and the industry to push out a product that is not done. Please take your time and release a game that is as close to perfect as it can be and that includes all the things that you want it to have from the beginning. Patch fixes, bug fixes, and minor changes will of course be needed, like always but I want success for this game. You will have better chances of success if you guys make sure everything you want in the game is included, to make sure everyone understands what Paralives offers from the beginning, and set a high standard that other companies at the moment are failing to do. Please, for your own image and for us Patreon supporter's sake - re-consider the Early Access feature. It is the feature of the devil and not needed. We want the best for you and this game. Don't go down the Early Access route and stress out the game to people. We will wait patiently. You can release a Demo for people to try instead, which is much better than Early Access.

I'm not sure if this is a dumb question, but are you going to have a disabillity option for your Parapeople? Like a wheelchair or missing limbs and prostethics? Or Is that too difficult to Programm in? (real question, no shade)

Looking forward to the early access, but I do worry a bit....I feel like people don't always understand that early access means not finished and might still judge the game harshly. I hope the game will have some sort of gameplay loop even on day one of early access.

I noticed that "weather and seasons" is currently under the During Early Access part of the Live Access mode. However, from what I've seen in previous videos, Paralives already has some basic weather effects in place (like rain and objects swaying to indicate wind). Maybe you could mention that either under Done or In Progress. :)

So this is pretty big news!! I always wondered if it would release to early access first before the full launch. I'm ecstatic about this as I'm just itching to get my hands on a good life sim, even if just a base version. Everything already done in the game looks 10 times better than the same features in competitor games so I know I could have a lot of fun just playing with what's there now!

Hello Alex, I just reviewed the roadmap in detail and I was reminded of how far you have come from when it was just you to where you are now with your amazing team. Although your team is small in comparison to other huge game developing teams, all that has been accomplished by you and your team is every bit as great as theirs in the short amount of time since your first announcement video, which captured me as a supporter, instantly! I'm so excited to be as close as we are now, as players, to not only being able to provide input into what we would love ingame, but now to also be able to help further game development by playing in Paralives itself is exciting to anticipate! Thank you so much for your transparency, team. I agree that early access is the way to go because at a certain point you will lose all but the diehards if you don’t provide a product, however rudimentary it is to begin with. I, personally, could live without things like pets and seasons at first, because those things are wrinkles that add new dimensions to the game but not the whole game itself. I think if the core gameplay is strong then you can build on it. I also think your customer base is conditioned to expect gradual expansions and updates over a period of some years, only they are used to having to pay an arm and a leg for it. A constantly changing product based on feedback that doesn’t nickel and dime its supporters will be embraced and keep people engaged over a long period of time. It will also make certain people feel as if they too are developers of a passion project, turning us into a real community instead of out-of-touch overlords occasionally throwing their fans a bone when it fits into the corporate calendar. All this is to say that I am really excited for the future and I love the idea of going on this journey with you guys and building the best possible iteration of the game together, which is the way LIFE is supposed to be but so sadly not often in this world.

Creating a universal design of icons/symbols to represent hobbies, interests, events and other things in the game is important. These symbols can be used in speech and thought bubbles, to reference memories, in pop-up screens, etc.

I love how you included a calendar with a schedule as one of the planned features. This is super important! I think every save file starting on Sunday, Day 1 and progressing forward in time on a Universal Calendar would be cool. And birthdays of paras would be a specific day, with aging set as a function (current day minus birthday). Important for aging and time synchronicity!

I'm wondering, will we be able to mod the game while it is in early access or will it be only after the game is finished?

Hi, will the relationships have a dash of randomes in them? Something like AI triggering things in their life, personality and interactions? Maybe it sounds bizzare but I much preffere not to be in control of everything in the para peep's lives - surprises and randomness would give them uniqness, more like they're alive not dolls.
