Paralives Music Demos Showcase

You’ve probably noticed that for the past few weeks, the team has been focusing a lot on making the foundation of the live mode, polishing the PAM and making various new features, but you might have been wondering what’s going on lately with the music in this game. What has Andrei been up to this whole time? Are there any new tracks that we'll get to hear other than Intertwined? The answer is yes!
In the above video, you’ve now just listened to 3 of the 39 music demos that I’ve done so far for the game. The point of making these short demos is really to explore all the musical possibilities that could fit the mood and gameplay of Paralives as well as its specific game modes: the build mode, the Paramaker and the live mode. By studying the game itself, other references (basically any kind of music) and brainstorming all sorts of crazy ideas, I get to try out all kinds of stuff and have fun! So without further ado, let's talk music!!!
Demo 10 - “Outside the box” 📦
Testing solo piano tracks
So the first demo you gave a listen to is a simple solo piano track that is very Sims 1 inspired and was made specifically for the Paramaker. “Fun” fact: out of the 39 demos, about half of them are all piano demos (from which this was my personal favorite)! The point of making simple piano tracks like this one was to be able to come up with musical ideas, riffs and explore a certain harmony and mood without it being too time-consuming to produce. I made this demo trying to think “outside of the box” and making something that would make the player feel inspired, and creative while keeping that cozy element that we all love from Paralives. I always thought it would sound so good if it were to be orchestrated or arranged into a bigger production, so who knows… 👀
Demo 13 - “Inseparable” 👥
Inspiring ourselves from other games
The second demo you heard is a bit more elaborate and features a more cozy electronic element to it. This one specifically was inspired by the music of two beautiful games called TOEM and Dorf Romantik (I really felt like their soundtracks had something in their cozy but explorative energy that we could inspire ourselves from in Paralives). I wanted this demo to fit in the background while also having energy so I on purpose didn't put a main melody, no drum snare and instead made a very rhythmic guitar and synth riff with all sorts of percussion around them. It is specifically made for the Paramaker and can be divided into interactive layers of instruments that stack depending on the player’s actions inside the game like the camera position. For example, zooming in the face of the Para while in the Paramaker could be accompanied with just two of the instruments, while zooming out would be accompanied with the full instrumentation for this track. It could be that or your progress making a Para, how big your household is, the possibilities are endless! These are just ideas for now though.
Demo 16 - “Violet” 💜
Combining genres into something new!
Last but not least, the 3rd demo you heard took much more brainstorming than the others since it's actually the combination of the 2 demos that preceded it (demo 14 and 15). The goal here was very simple: explore an all acoustic folk approach to the music (demo 14) then a full-on lofi cliché approach (demo 15) then combine both of them into something I call Acoustic Lofi 😱 (which, as a genre and name already exists but is completely different from what I had in mind for the instrumentation and overall production approach of this demo). I really wanted to make something unique for this demo so instead of doing the same thing as usual and plan out a structure and idea in advance, I sat down with my guitar and tried to improvise a song on the spot. Once I got something good, I added layers on top of it and tried to make sense out of the chaos I did. It turned out pretty good but I’m pretty sure there is still much more to explore in this fresh approach we just discovered.
Note that these are only 3 non-definitive demos from the bunch and there’s still much left to show you all but most importantly there’s still much left to explore in the next few weeks. It’s been super fun to be able to try out different things for the game and at this rate I’m pretty confident on where things are heading with the general musical style of Paralives. I’m really curious to know what you thought about these demos! Did you like one specifically? What style do you think fits best the mood of Paralives? All in all, these songs are super nice. I think it’s hard to make ost that dosnt become annoying on repeat. but so far so good! Idk anything about making music but to me these sound awesome! There is just the right amount of stuff and variation going on. I'm getting calm, creative and a little bit mysterious vibes. Bonus points for the pun XD - Outside of the box could get repetitive in the long run having just one instrument. - Violet could fit into build mode best since it's calmer, but maybe I feel that way just because The Sims does it that way. - If you're thinking about making the music change with what's going on in the game, I hope you find a good balance. In The Sims' CAS I find the different too drastic: the music becomes too quiet and boring while editing the sim's head, and it makes it seem the most dull part of CAS. Also editing full outfits makes the music either too loud or the best version that I don't want to stop listening to. Perhaps this should be changed in the game settings.

I also very much enjoy #2 for its sweetness and warmth. Both of them feel like they would fit right into the Paralives aesthetic that we've been privileged to see so far :)

2022-04-23 09:00:00 +0000 UTCIt's important for Paralives to have it's own identity and I truly believe that going 16th's direction is the best choice and there is still many more genre combinations to be experimented with. One last thing I'd like to mention is regarding an improvement that could be applied to no matter what kind of genre Paralives music will end up being and it is that the tracks must be memorable and catchy or stand out from the rest. Take for example The Sims 3 OST, almost every track falls under the same genre (orchestral) however I remember every single one of them like my name due to how well the composition was done and not to forget how catchy the melody is! I hope my advice makes sense and helps! :D

Now with that said….Outside the Box is gorgeous! Inseparable is warm and cozy. And I can really see myself interacting with the town while Violet is playing in the background. Keep it up! 🫶

I kinda wish there was like a rain track in the background some demos, like "out of the box" since it sounds right up my alley for some rainy study music I listen to. When I got a concussion back in December, I found a lot of Sims 4 sounds to be really grating, like the create a sim music or builders mode music to the point I would have to turn off the sound a lot. Some of the sound sensitivity remains to this day, but some softer tracks would be nice. I really love "out of the box", its just ( I'm no music or sound expert) some element in it hurts my ears a bit, the only way to describe it is wishing it to be softer- I guess. I'm sorry, I hope this helps

The only minor criticism I have is that Inseparable currently sounds a bit too reminiscent of The Sims 4, but maybe that's just me since I haven't seen anyone else mention this yet. Also, I was wondering about the song we heard in Maggie's reveal video. I absolutely loved that song when I first heard it, and I thought it fit the mood of making a para so well— not too loud so it isn't overwhelming and you can actually concentrate, yet not too quiet so the process doesn't feel dull. So I was just curious about if it's still being considered for any aspect of the game?

That kinda vibe suits paralives well, as I think the game itself feels more sincere and sentimental compared to other life sim games that are more wacky and lighthearted.

The only tiny bit of (hopefully constructive sounding) criticism I'd make is that on the third piece, where you have those rows of sounds like tapping (not the clapping, I mean the sound like tapping on wood), I'd just tweak the volume of those down a little to make them blend better as I found they made me jump the first time and remained just a little jarring.

"Inseparable" has a hint of stardew valley, and I love that too! “Violet” is definitely the most unique one, I can't pull any correlations to that one but I really like it. It feels fresh and trendy, if you can get that feel from a song lol

I love to dabble playing the Sims 1 music and I absolutely adore everything you've come up with so far xx My favourites are the first 2 but that's not to say that I don't also enjoy the third one, I just really love those mellow piano vibes. But I think there's going to be heaps of opportunity to express different styles within this game so why not just have them all 👍😅

The one reminiscent of Dorfromantik - which I also think has an amazing soundtrack for the kind of game it is - very nice. And the last one with the modern beat makes this a great trio that I think represents the game you're making very well. So yeah, I think all of them fit, I don't think you should be limited to one style specifically.

As others have said, to make it even better I would definitely omit the clapping. In general a chill, laid-back feel like that is what I would associate with this game. But of course that's just my take, and since musical tastes vary so much, it would be great if you could give players the option to choose their musical "theme" for gameplay.

One of my absolute favorite games of all time is The Sims 1 so I think I must say my favorite is Outside the box. However I agree with many here saying Violet is awesome but the clapping gets to loud and distracting, but the acoustic vibes are perfect for this game. (I first found out about Paralives this autumn when I stumbled upon Pixelade and I ended up binging all of his videos about Paralives Q&A, and the music he uses in those videos (and all his other videos) is a cozy acoustic guitar jam, it fit the build and PAM shorts you had back then.)

A lot of people forget this but the sims 1 has one of the most underrated osts of all time for a video game, the entire series is a complete joy and I strongly suggest going back to it especially hot date and making magic for more inspo. I think violet would be better without the fake drums, have you heard of El ten eleven? Perhaps check out their 1st and 2nf album for some great stuff. Overall though I think the soundtrack could be very fun, but lofi is already dated now so it's not really my thing. Remember sims 2 weird, sims 1 amazing and your own twists too. Anyway thank you for making this game I love you all, I swear this is the only thing besides having a family I am looking forward to lol.

I really appreciate the feedback from a fellow composer😄 A lot of demos I've done so far do have orchestral instruments but I haven't done an orchestra-exclusive one YET. As for chamber ensembles, I'd say the acoustic version of Intertwined features that instrumentation approach the way I would hear it for Paralives✨

2022-04-15 16:37:10 +0000 UTCI enjoyed all of them, but particularly liked Violet. Since music tracks are on repeat I think it's important for tracks to be tolerable to say the least! lol. I've played games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing where I couldn't handle hearing the music in the background. The tracks became too noticeable if you get what I'm saying. Violet is ambient and lovely. Nice work!

The second melody (sorry I forgot the name) is more cheerful and great for the time while you create your new Friend/Para. A nice atmosphere leaves a first positive impression. And the first song while we rearrange the neighbourhood. Andrei, you did such a great job. Thank you for this nice update!

I really loved Violet too, I could imagine it being played as you choose where to live, or maybe on the world map. Inseparable sounds to me like something from SimCity or Cities Skylines, but that music is always so calming and fantastic that I think it would fit great for Paralives too!

They can't make every single aspect different, cause then we won't have anything of the stuff that we loved from the EA-franchise. I think it's fine to be inspired by the things that worked from those games.

My feedback on Violet is that I thought the melody was not very pronounced or memorable - I like tracks that I can hum along to. This is also why I like Intertwined and Outside the Box so much! Andrei, have you experimented at all with Bossa Nova style music?

I'm not that sold on Violet though, but I still think it's good. I just can't imagine it in the game. I really love the use of piano though. I think it should be the "main" instrument for the soundtrack.

I think “Violet” is the best one though and really distinguishes Paralives as its own thing. It’s not overpowering, I feel like it would complement gameplay while also being good enough to stand on its own.

But it definitely sounds 'new', like something is being born or created. I'm tickled pink that the game might have piano music!! I don't usually hope for features from that other game, but I'd LOVE to have a radio station in the game that featured your music, so that I can 'listen in' while I play, if that's possible... :-)

Although, out of these three tunes I liked "Out of the Box" most because as soon as the opening notes played I was caught up and carried away! Very appropriate name for this tune, btw!!
