Clothing Recoloring + Body Shapes + The Language of the Parafolks
Added 2021-11-05 20:48:20 +0000 UTCHi! How are you doing today?
I’ve been eating a lot of leftover candies from Halloween this week and I don’t feel exactly like myself but other than that, everything’s good on our side. For today’s post, I’ll share an overview of some of the things that we’ve been working on lately. As a reminder, you can take a look at this page of our website to see what we work on each month. Right now, we’re focusing on the Paramaker but we’ll be switching to working on the simulation part of the game (the live mode) in the near future.
Clothing recoloring and clothes with patterns (For Patron only! Please don’t share)
Lately, we’ve been working on our clothing and hairstyle recoloring system. Our goal is to allow hairstyles and clothes to have multiple colors on them and for players to be able to edit each color independently.
Developers and modders will be able to create all kinds of clothing items. A piece of clothing will be able to have multiple colors and a pattern and all of that will be recolorable by players using the in-game color wheel or premade color swatches.

Some color and pattern examples on a tank top.
Body presets (For Patron only! Please don’t share)
As mentioned in a previous Patreon post, we were working on a way to have different premade shapes for different parts of the body. This is useful when you want to create a new character quickly and don’t want to tweak every little slider offered for the various nose adjustments and just want to choose a premade nose from a list, for instance. This feature is now fully working in the game and we are also now automatically generating small preview thumbnails that will show these presets in the Paramaker interface.

Some of the presets we have done to date for a few of the categories of the Paramaker, a lot more will come. We are temporarily using Sebastian as the mannequin for generating these thumbnails so that’s why you can see tattoos and body hair on every “body types” presets!
Researching the audio direction and spoken language of the Parafolks (For Patron only! Please don’t share)
One question that Patrons often ask us is: what will the language of the Parafolks sound like? That’s surely an important topic and we’ve been spending more time on the question lately. We recently made a first prototype of what a conversation would sound like and it was a really fun thing to do! In the same way, we’re also researching the audio design direction that we will use for every sound that you’ll be able to hear in the game. Sound effects like: clicking on a button, putting on a shirt in the Paramaker, changing hairstyle, etc. We still need to do more tests but we’re really looking forward to sharing more about all that in the future!
To end the week on a good note, here are some of the bugs that Alice got recently when creating new face and body animations for the Parafolks!

I hope you’ll have a better weekend than them!
Alex

everyone is giving these complicated responses when i personally think some mumbling would fit the vibe of the game and be easy to develop

2022-07-30 05:58:52 +0000 UTCI would prefer a language like Mandarin. A own conlang, simple as possible, just root words. e.g. I like the dog - in Mandarin: Wǒ xǐhuān gǒu (I like dog) and The dog likes me would be: Gǒu xǐhuān wǒ (Dog like i). No inflection, cases and so on. For example like is "mapa" in the Para language and dog is "suno". So would be "I like the dog/dogs." just be "Mapa suno (Like dog)".

2022-05-04 12:53:35 +0000 UTCI would love to see the option to layer clothes in the game, also being able to save all presets you have made would be cool too.

2021-11-28 13:11:11 +0000 UTCI second this!

2021-11-25 23:45:19 +0000 UTCI've just had an idea - maybe we could have an option to save our own presets too?

2021-11-12 18:29:04 +0000 UTCso... are we going to be able to play as a tortured bat person??? 🤔 because I for one would love to.
2021-11-12 15:28:44 +0000 UTCI love seeing the bugs 😂 idk what it is but having bugs in game (that of course arnt game breaking) is always funny.

2021-11-10 18:49:17 +0000 UTCI think you guys should consider making a fake language that actually is a language, and not just random words like the sims. It should mask the problem of janky dialog just as well as simlish does. While also being something that makes sense and can be translated to write specific words for things like billboards or store signs
2021-11-10 06:30:11 +0000 UTCfor language, maybe you guys could go for a Breath of the Wild take on things :) most of the characters just make a bunch of grunts/groans/laughs, but it gets the message across :)

2021-11-09 14:46:07 +0000 UTCI recommend those "what english sounds like to non-english speakers" videos on ye olde YouTube. Makes for fun research.

2021-11-08 21:03:15 +0000 UTCExtreme sliders would make hilarious Paras! We do need to have a cap on those to make sure animations work properly. It could indeed be fun to have some funny Paras here and there, so we'll see what's the maximum we can allow in game.

2021-11-08 20:46:56 +0000 UTCDefinitely! We would really like to have a language that can convey emotions even if no actual words were to be used. The intonation and sound are both really important so we'll have to study this.
Sandrine
2021-11-08 20:22:47 +0000 UTCI would recommend sticking to making a fake language - the benefit of using a made-up language is that people are a lot less likely to tire of hearing the same phrases over and over again. You don't have to pick particular "exotic" languages, either - the Nordics have some nice sounds (a LOT of unique vocal sounds), celtic, spanish and the like have some awesome consonant sounds. Tone, pauses and stress are important for conveying emotion - just having two characters going "blah blah blah" at each other is dull, having one going "Blah blah... blah, BLAH!" is a lot more dynamic and interesting. But you guys already knew that.

2021-11-08 11:35:02 +0000 UTCI love the gargoyle / bat para. XD

2021-11-07 17:44:33 +0000 UTCI think it would be awesome to use a base language that isn’t English to generate gibberish. Would be super unique and beautiful naturally working at putting all the different nuances in too.

2021-11-07 08:49:11 +0000 UTCI don't know if this would work or if anyone would even like it but I'd be ok with the language being something similar to the language the minions speak from the despicable me movies. I like it cause various phrases are from real languages. Also those bugs made me laugh lol.

2021-11-06 13:04:00 +0000 UTCThere's actually only one body model in the game which is gender-neutral, so I guess that body hair on a female body will be possible in game.
Anja Hoffmann
2021-11-06 10:01:45 +0000 UTCI just hope the language will not be in a style like in animal crossing. Sounds too unnatural. What I've always loved about the Sims is that they sound so authentic and relatable. I hope that paralives will go in a similar direction!

2021-11-06 09:35:49 +0000 UTCI'm really loving the art style of the paras; looks great!

2021-11-06 08:13:17 +0000 UTCThe bugs are more scary than fun imo 😂😂
Victoria Simoes
2021-11-06 03:56:56 +0000 UTCI realize it's because you're using Sebastian as the template, but it's really cool to see body hair on a "female" body in a life sim for once!

2021-11-06 03:32:56 +0000 UTCI think it would be really funny if they all just said one thing in different tones depending on the situation. I really like the idea someone else had in the comments with "pa ra, parpra" etc
2021-11-06 01:35:47 +0000 UTCThis is all fantastic but that second bugged face looks exactly like a character CallMeKevin would make. Please have some extreme sliders (or a way to disable the sensible limits?), I want to see that beautiful face in game 🤣

2021-11-06 01:05:10 +0000 UTCLooking great! If you don't want to construct a language, you could look into open-use conlangs. I don't know how esperanto and toki pona are for that, but it could save you the work if you'd rather not build your own. Toki pona has some really fun sounding words in it and the grammar is really fascinating because it allows the vocabulary to only need about 130 words total. Additionally, it was constructed with minimal sounds so most people can pronounce the words regardless of native tongue. Alright, done geeking out now! Whatever you end up doing will be great!

2021-11-06 00:03:56 +0000 UTCI know it probably wouldn't be practical, but for a moment I imagined if the body feature thumbnails actually updated to match the current model - so if you had a specific skin tone, the thumbnails would also use that skin tone.

2021-11-05 23:43:44 +0000 UTCTrue! We're taking into considerations a lot of things like that and we're making sure to research the subject well enough. Consulting a linguist would certainly be helpful and we have been considering it as well
Alex Massé
2021-11-05 22:13:48 +0000 UTCThe language can’t sound too similar to Simlish, so maybe it should be a little less goofy and more convincing? You could consult a linguist for instance

2021-11-05 22:05:28 +0000 UTCnow I want an ombre tank top in real life 😂

2021-11-05 21:57:34 +0000 UTCWe still have work to do when generating clothing for random Paras but we aim to have rules that make the generated outfit look good at all time!
Alex Massé
2021-11-05 21:52:27 +0000 UTCThat last one could be a new life stage!
Alex Massé
2021-11-05 21:51:12 +0000 UTCHehe thank you <3
Alex Massé
2021-11-05 21:47:43 +0000 UTCI mentioned this before but I do hope randomly generated Paras’ clothes/accessories can randomly pull from the color wheel and pattern tool and not just from the premade swatches.
Michael Green
2021-11-05 21:19:59 +0000 UTCBody hair should definitely be available for all paras

2021-11-05 21:15:28 +0000 UTCParapa! Par parp pa? (I kind of like the idea, too, but wonder how to play it out? What about UbbiDubbi but with "para?" Parapubby?
2021-11-05 21:14:26 +0000 UTCThat last bug... holy crap, that's hilarious. It should be in the game somehow. I don't care where or what it does, but I want this to be a recurring character. It's ironically too perfect not to use for something.

2021-11-05 21:06:59 +0000 UTCBro, y'all seen House of Ashes on YouTube? Game just came out. That bug looking like the vampires. Looking like Pazuzu 😭😭

2021-11-05 21:01:14 +0000 UTCLmao the last bug should be a para cryptid like mothman 😂

2021-11-05 20:56:22 +0000 UTCI am completely in love with the shades that blend into each other!! I cannot tell you how awesome I think it is! Can't wait to hear what the Parafolks may sound like! You guys are doing such an amazing job. And finally, I think I have seen some characters in my Sims game that looks eerily like those "creative creations" that Alice made! :-) You made me laugh at the end of a very long week. Thank you!!
Jennifer Huber
2021-11-05 20:54:43 +0000 UTCI like the idea of a gibberish language the same way sims has, but of course make it your own. Maybe everything is derivative of the word Para lol. Like how Smurfs use Smurf as a verb or noun. Like Good bye could be "Pa Ra!" Or something equally silly
Sophie Goodman-Merel
2021-11-05 20:53:27 +0000 UTCThose bugs are so cursed
2021-11-05 20:51:54 +0000 UTCHonestly, I can’t think of a language that wouldn’t have to be translated.
