Long-winded way of saying if they start Dune 2 with a narrative gap between the two movies (maybe even just a few weeks), it could help smooth out the structural imbalances called out in this ep, since that makes it easier to structure the story as its own thing.

I think it’s such a huge, strategic mistake for sequels to start their narrative immediately after the predecessor movie. The gap between movies is a gift — take advantage of it. Starting immediately afterward paradoxically requires you to explain even more, because the audience is immediately dislocated and catching up. It’s the worst use of en medias res. Compare the beginning Empire Strikes Back with The Last Jedi. Empire is such a smoother ride, it eases you into it while dropping hints of what’s gone on before to suggest character growth and an evolution of the world. This sets us up to be excited to see what these characters we love have been up to, and what’s changed about the challenges they face. Whereas in The Last Jedi, we’re immediately bumping on how the characters are acting differently and the world feels changed even tho no “time” has passed.
