Warmth Process Notes

Alrighty here’s my process for this!

We start off with my little, very little moodboard

Excuse the blurriness, I just saved them from Pinterest lol.

Wanted to draw something’s simple because I was trying out a new process. Adding lines along with my paintings. Usually I just use the lasso tool for any lines, but this time I wanted to sort of merge lineart with painting (it didn’t go so well in my opinion but this was a good learning piece)

Very doodley sketch

No regard for perspective or whatever just laying down shapes.

Time to correct that perspective!

I went in with procreate’s perspective grid locked down my lines and just tried to get everything looking decent

You’ll then see I added the plants from my moodboard. I really love when there’s plants growing on buildings and places. It looks really pleasant and refreshing. Plus the surrounding buildings would be fairly warm (brown-ish) so having that cool green would balance each other

Back in CSP (Clip studio paint), I did the color blocking with my handy lasso tool! Here I actually forgot I was supposed to add lineart and I was just like eh I’ll add it later (that was a mistake)

Here’s how it looks without the sketch!

So here’s me adding the lines as I painted and yeah this was my mistake. I really should have added the lines BEFORE painting. I was struggling because I didn’t even know where to put the lines. Wouldn’t have been a problem if I just did the lineart earlier T_T this one building nearly made me cry and give up on this. I took a 3 day break after this , like that’s how much a single building did to me 😂

After my very refreshing 3 day break, I decided to tackle this once again! And it was SO much easier. I guess struggling on that one building wasn’t for nothing! Looks very plain at this point, but it’s time for my fave part,

LIGHTING!!!

Multiply layer my friend! See how much mood a purple-orange gradient did!

Light for the lamp (add/add(glow) in csp helps me really well for strong lighting)

Soft light layer for the soft light on the buildings. Like the name implies, soft light is for soft, gentle lighting. Hard light is for stronger/harsher lighting. Add/ add (glow) is for even stronger, even harsher light!

I doubled the soft light layer. I didn’t want this to be too harsh, so I didn’t do 1 single hard light layer, rather 2 soft light layers. Still need the light to be gentle!

More soft light for the lamp light!

A little color correction and done! (I made the multiply layer a lil cooler so the warm light could stand out even more)

Hope these lil notes helped to see how I did this painting.

I honestly think overlay is overrated lol. Soft light / hard light for the win!!!🤌🤌🤌 most light scenarios I use either of them. But sometimes I just close my eyes and pick whatever works lol, there’s no one layer fits all! Experiment! See what works for you!
