Advanced hair dynamics PART_A (VIDEO TUTORIAL)

Hello,

First part of hair dynamics is up. I recently updated to Cinema4D 2023.2.1 and I found a lot of bug fixes and improvements. These tutorials only work on this version onwards.

In part A I ll show you how to procedurally model feathers.

Let me know if any questions!

Cheers,
T.

thanks! yeah you can also do that with mospline as an alternative. Resample spline didnt exist in OM at the time of the recording if i remember correctly

Thanos Kagkalos

Incredible tutorial. I learned a lot of new things. I found a way not to use the INSYDIUM plugin by the way. To solve the problem you need to put Node Operator Resample Spline into Connect

Roman Pytaliev

Ofc it works just not correct most of the time. There are many internal changes/bugs fixes and introduced for the dynamic system. In order to see if you missed or if it is indeed not working, open my project file in 2024 and if it is the same then you will know the answer :)

Thanos Kagkalos

Well, your project file worked in 2024.4.0. The feather held together and moved under turbulence. So I must have missed a step when I tried to reconstruct it from scratch. It takes a lot of trial and error!

Jeff Kellam

Hey thanks! Well stick to the c4d version this file was made, cause every version maxon tends to change many things in dynamics -still unfortunately-. Download project files for this and please make sure ur in the same version and let me know how that works!

Thanos Kagkalos

Great tutorial, I'm learning so much. One question: when I get to the place where we start dynamics, my rope segments break apart and then fall in the -Y direction, like normal gravity. I tried turning off every gravity setting I could find, but the segments still fall after a few frames and continue in -Y direction. What did you do to prevent that? I'm using C4D 2024.4.0. Thanks!

Jeff Kellam

thanks for the kind words!

Thanos Kagkalos

Love this tutorial, thank you very much for preparing it :)

random_capybara

Unfortunately not everything is possible in all ways + a big part of my patreon is having xparticles available. They are handy for many tasks that c4d cannot

Thanos Kagkalos

It would be really great in future tutorials to mention that we would need INSYDIUM and if not, how to use native cinema if not.

Ed

not sure, but this setup cannot be cloned via a cloner if i remember correctly. You need to put everything under a null and manually copy it around. Check project files i think i got a rig like this in one of them. If not i will upload. Let me know ! thanks

Thanos Kagkalos

Thanks for the tutorial ! I've one question, I'm trying to clone the feather and have multiple ones "exploding" from the center towards the border of the screen. I can't figure out how to be able to clone it and animate it's position. It doesn't have to be dynamic, could fake it with some displacement but I can't connect the feater from its center if I transform into an editable object... any tips or idea ?

David

Thanks bud! Well supposedly everything should be done via a mospline (does the exact same thing as resample minus the smoothing part). But I have this specific talent/curse that all my setups are not fully working in c4d haha. I hope one day it becomes this fully working procedural tool :)

Thanos Kagkalos

Awesome tutorial! really like the "procedurality" of whole setup! One question though is there a possibility of using something else instead of mt spline, don't have xparticles atm...haha Lots of love - Take care!

MUHAMMAD TABISH

4090 + 13900k (cpu plays a major role as these are not only gpu solved)

Thanos Kagkalos

What GPU are you using? I'm using a rtx 4090, but it doesn't work as fast as in your tutorial at all. Just wondering if anything is wrong with my settings:-)

Chronox

Good idea if works. Im unsure if its just a visibility issue. It shouldnt happen nevertheless. Spline mask ensures we are working with splines before anything else, it is like a connect object but for splines.

Thanos Kagkalos

Hey Thanos, instead of using a spline mask to solve the mtSplineSample issue, can you not just turn off everything in the 'Display' tab of the mtSplineSample object? Turning off the display points, start point, end point and display gradient worked for me, and meant I didn't need to use a spline mask.

James Clark

yes, with mospline, but it doesnt work very well with updating or i had issues i cant recall. IF it works for u fine, for me it didnt thats why i use XP

Thanos Kagkalos

Hey there! May I ask if there's some other/native way to re-sample splines in C4D besides using xparticles? Thanks!

Mantas Kava

unsure. I will upload project files soon. Probably ur connections never worked correct in the first place and u have particles overlapping

Thanos Kagkalos

Hello, when I enable turbulence, my feathers will flicker and the previously created shape will change. I'm not sure if this is a bug or something else. It only returns to normal after I delete the feather connection.

lei Rayson

thanks a lot bud!

Thanos Kagkalos

Woah… this is one jam-packed little session with so much info and and tips procedural approaches. I’m amazed at all the solutions you find along the way to make it all work together. Especially love the connector tips. Looking forward to the follow up!

Fco. Garcia Nava

thanks bud! next tut with render is coming soon and u ll be able to translate all knowledge to rS

Thanos Kagkalos

oh dude, my head is spinning. The result is sooo cool. thank you. will do my own scene trying to render with redshift

Erwin Kunz

thanks bud!!

Thanos Kagkalos

thanks bud!

Thanos Kagkalos

Great stuff as always Thanos. And congrats on the puppers!

Adam Zunder

killer build dude! I love the step effector tips for the point deformations!

Spenser Clark

thanks bud!

Thanos Kagkalos

thanks a lot more incoming!

Thanos Kagkalos

Amazing great tips throughout the video. Thank you

Marco Ruesta

Looking forward to more of these – really neat to see newish capsules combined with good old mograph tools to bring totally different things to life.

Ryan Summers

sorry for this, there is a bug u need to change browser or something. It always happen for some people

Thanos Kagkalos

thanks bro!!

Thanos Kagkalos

Hey, the video is not available to me somehow

David Baertz

top notch bud!

Mikhail

Thanks for the feedback! Yea spine moving makes everything more complicated cause of spline orientations in c4d (u ll see in the upcoming tut)

Thanos Kagkalos

WOW! I’ve been working on some feathers lately and happy to say that I got somewhat close to your setup, but the missing part for me and this is imo what makes your setup so elegant is the use of connectors. I was using vertex map to control the forces (in my case I don’t want the spine to move). Thanks so much for sharing, this is really great! Looking forward for the next parts :)

Rodrigo Ortega

ofc he will haha thanks bud

Thanos Kagkalos

Amazing procedural, you are a C4D genius and will Baba teach us C4D soon :D

Hoi

thanks buddy!

Thanos Kagkalos

Nice job! Kind of mind-boggling how you're able to figure all that out. I'm going to have to go back an watch it about 50 times, I think.
