Velvet Goldmine (1998)

Part One: Vidyard, WeTransfer

Part Two: Vidyard, WeTransfer

This is 'British Rocky Horror' in the sense that it had to have been the movie all the English gays got high to for at least twenty years. It also happens to be a deeply engrossing, 'queer as in fuck you,' documentary-esque love letter to the glamour, angst, and identity struggle of 70s Britain. Also packed with a trio of guys who would go on to have some pretty insane careers: Jonathan Rhys-Myers, Ewan McGregor, and Christian Bale. Wild.

didn't expect this one to make me emotional but it really did... very overwhelming but in the best way <3

gotta thank Bones for introducing me to that version, honestly the music on that show was top tier. I literally made a playlist with all the songs I got from it.

I love that cover soooo much. I can't remember, but Velvet Goldmine may have been my introduction to Placebo now that i'm thinking about it

MY. GOD. what a transformative fucking experience. I think I originally watched this movie for Jonathan Rhys-Meyers because I’ve been obsessed since Bend It Like Beckham (and then The Tudors, and then August Rush). He’s just one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever seen? Full frontal Ewan was an incredible surprise tho and one I was NOT complaining about (been obsessed with him since Moulin Rouge of course). But watching it now when I’m much more dialed in to queer media, my jaw was on the floor. What an incredible film. I agree 100% with your analysis of the attitude, with queer being punk and anger and longing and just all the feelings. The art direction and the costume design and the MUSIC, good lord this film should have won all the awards. And Christian Bale and Toni Collette were incredible as well. I am so glad this won the sweepstakes this month!

I love this movie so much, I had a period in the early 2000's where I just kept re-watching it to the point that I still know it pretty much by heart even though it's been a while since I last watched it.

god its been so long since i've seen this movie... it made me so obsessed with Jonathan tbh. i feel now at 30 tho i got even more emotional watching it than i did when i was... god i had to be around 16 the first time i saw it. esp with the doomed love of Brian & Curt & how they still both kinda clung to it in their own ways... and the MUSIC!!! the "Death of Glitter" song, 20th Century Boy, is actually sung by the band Placebo if anyone is interested. They're SOOOO good. everyone should check them out.

This is the movie that inspired me to make a queer scrapbook when I was a closeted little girl in the suburbs

i don't usually comment here but i really enjoyed your reaction, it fills the void of the fact that i haven't managed to convince any of my friends to watch velvet goldmine together, also i think you'd enjoy what ewan mcgregor said a few years back about what he thinks happened after the ending (sorry it's not a direct link i couldn't find it on twitter) https://www.tumblr.com/amberrockstar/127879165344/this-fic-via-ewan-mcgregors-twitter-today-is-my
